International Current Affairs
  • Today (26th April) is World Intellectual Property Day.
    • The event was established by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in 2000 to "raise awareness of how patents, copyright, trademarks and designs impact on daily life" and "to celebrate creativity, and the contribution made by creators and innovators to the development of societies across the globe".
    • 26 April was chosen as the date to celebrate this day because it coincides with the date on which the Convention Establishing the World Intellectual Property Organization entered into force in 1970.
    • Theme of World Intellectual Property Day 2018 – "Powering Change: Women in Innovation and Creativity"   
  • India's ranking has dropped two spots to 138 among 180 countries in the World Press Freedom Index 2018 released by non-government organisation Reporters Without Borders.
    • Norway topped the list for the second consecutive year followed by Sweden.
  • A Pakistan High Court today disqualified Foreign Minister Khawaja Asif as an MP for holding a UAE work permit. 
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi left for China today's evening to attend an Informal summit, to be hosted by Chinese President Xi Jinping in Wuhan city during 27th and 28th April 2018.
    • Note : This informal discussion is going to take place for the first time after 1954.
  • French president Emanuel Macron today announced that France will not leave the 2015 Iran nuclear deal and pushed for a comprehensive agreement with Tehran to address the US concerns.
  • External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj is on a visit to Mongolia.
    • During this visit, Swaraj will co-chair the 6th round of the India-Mongolia Joint Consultative Committee with Mongolia’s Foreign Minister Damdin Tsogtbaatar
    • The two ministers will review the projects under implementation during their meeting.
  • The Indian and Malaysian armies will hold a two-week military exercise titled 'Harimau Shakti 2018' beginning April 30 in Malaysia as part of efforts to bolster defence cooperation. 
    • The joint exercise will take place in the dense forests of Sengai Perdik in Hulu Langat district of Malaysia.
National Current Affairs
  • NITI Aayog today launched Atal New India Challenge encouraging innovation in various sectors.
    • Under the Atal New India Challenge, which shall be run in collaboration with five ministries, the organization will invite prospective innovators/MSMEs/start-ups to design market-ready products, using cutting edge technologies or prototypes across 17 identified focus areas such as Climate Smart Agriculture, Smart Mobility, Predictive Maintenance of Rolling Stock, Waste Management etc.
New Appointments
  • The Indian government has cleared the appointment of senior advocate Indu Malhotra as Supreme Court Judge.
    • With this, Mrs. Malhotra is set to become the first woman lawyer to be directly appointed as a Supreme Court judge.
    • Malhotra is the second woman to be appointed as the top court's senior advocate. 
  • Reliance group Chairman Anil Ambani's eldest son Anmol Ambani has been appointed to the boards of Reliance Nippon Life Asset Management and Reliance Home Finance.  
  • Former India off-spinner Aashish Kapoor has been appointed Chairman of the All-India Junior Selection Committee.
    • Kapoor, who replaced Venkatesh Prasad as the head of the committee, will lead the three-member panel. 
    • The other two members of the selection panel are Gyanendra Pandey and Rakesh Parikh.
MOUs & Agreements
  • The National Physical Laboratory (CSIR-NPL) and Department of Telecommunications (DoT) have signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on technical knowledge sharing for establishing nationwide Time Stamping and Time Synchronization Network (TSTSN) and traceability of Time signal to UTC NPL Time.
  • The Union Government has entered into agreement with World Bank for flexible financing arrangement to accelerate research towards early development for biopharmaceuticals under National Biopharma Mission.
  • The Union Cabinet has approved Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) between India and World Health Organisation (WHO) represented by its Regional Office for South-East Asia acting through its country office in India.  
    • The bilateral MoA shall encourage cooperation between India and WHO.
    • This will facilitate in improving the public health status of the people in India.
Science & Technology
  • The Indian Navy has inducted the third ship of the Landing Craft Utility (LCU) Mk-IV project at Port Blair. 
    • The ship was commissioned as INLCU L53 by Vice Admiral Bimal Verma, commander-in-chief, Andaman & Nicobar Command, of the Indian Armed Forces' tri-service command.
    • The command oversees India's Andaman and Nicobar Island territories, including the strategic Strait of Malacca in the Indian Ocean.  
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) has approved restructured National Bamboo Mission (NBM), a Centrally Sponsored Scheme under National Mission for Sustainable Agriculture (NMSA) during remaining period of 14th Finance Commission (2018-20) with an outlay of Rs. 1290 crore. 
    • The restructured mission will ensure holistic development of bamboo sector by addressing complete value chain and establish effective linkage of producers (farmers) with industry.
Sports Current Affairs
  • The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has recommended Indian cricket captain Virat Kohli's name for the second time for India's highest sporting honour, the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna
    • It also recommended former India captain and U-19 World Cup-winning coach Rahul Dravid for the Dronacharya Award
    • Padma Bhushan and Arjuna awardee Sunil Gavaskar has been nominated for Dhyan Chand Award for Lifetime Achievement in Sports.
    • Indian men's cricket team opener Shikhar Dhawan and Indian women's team opener Smriti Mandhana were recommended for the Arjuna Award.
