- Today (24th April) is World Day For Animals In Laboratories (also known as World Lab Animal Day).
- This day was established in 1979 by the British National Anti-Vivisection Society (NAVS).
- The date 24th April was chosen to observe this day, as it marked the birthday of former NAVS president Hugh Dowding, 1st Baron Dowding.
- Today is Pinhole Photography day.
- External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman have represented India in the Foreign Ministers & Defence Ministers meets organized by the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) respectively.
- Member countries in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) include China, India, Russia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Pakistan have attended the meetings.
National Current Affairs
- Today (24th April) is National Panchayati Raj Day.
- This date marks a defining moment in the history of decentralization of political power to the grassroots level.
- Note : The Constitution (73rd Amendment) Act, 1992 that came into force with effect from 24th April, 1993 has institutionalized Panchayati Raj through the village, Intermediate and District level Panchayats.
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi has launched the Rashtriya Gramin Swaraj Abhiyan from Madhya Pradesh's Mandla today.
- Aim of Rashtriya Gramin Swaraj Abhiyan : Training, building infrastructure, and setting up initiatives for e-governance under the e-Panchayat Mission Mode Project.
- The Rashtriya Gram Swaraj Abhiyan will strengthen the Panchayati Raj system across the country and address critical gaps that constrain its success.
- The Home Ministry has issued a gazetted notification removing the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA), 1958 across the state of Meghalaya.
- The ministry also reduced the act from 16 to eight police stations in Arunachal Pradesh.
- Important Note : The AFSPA act gives immunity and special rights to security forces to carry out operations in regions the government has declared "disturbed".
- The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has relaxed 6-decade-old Protected Area Permit (PAP) regime to allow foreign tourists to access border areas of Nagaland, Mizoram and Manipur for five years with effect from April 1, 2018.
- The move is being initiated to promote tourism, create job opportunities for the locals and generate revenue for the states.
- Diu Smart City has become 1st city in India to run on 100% renewable energy during daytime.
Science & Technology
- The Ultra Long Range version of the Airbus' A350 XWB, which has a range of nearly 18,000 km and can fly for 20 hours non-stop, has successfully completed its first flight.
- The aircraft will be used to operate the 15,322-km flight between Singapore and New York, which will be the world's longest commercial flight, later this year.
- Astronomers using the Gemini North telescope in Hawaii have confirmed the presence of hydrogen sulphide gas over planet Uranus that is responsible for giving rotten eggs their pungent smell.
- In a bid to boost defence cooperation , the Union Government has decided to gift obsolete weaponry that can be refurbished at minimal cost to friendly countries.
- Specific military platforms being looked under this proposal are artillery guns, armoured vehicles, helicopters, naval patrol vehicles and radar systems that are obsolete or nearing obsolescence.

- According to recently released Migration and Development Brief by World Bank, India has retained top position as recipient of remittances with about $69 billion in 2017.

- The committee on on Inter-country removal & retention of children has submitted it's report to Smt. Maneka Sanjay Gandhi (Minister for Women and Child Development).
- Along with its recommendation, Committee has also submitted draft legislation- International Child Abduction bill to the Government.
- The committee recommended to establish ‘Inter Country Parental Child Removal Disputes Resolution Authority (ICPCRDRA)’

Awards & Honors
- Jailed Egyptian photojournalist Mahmoud Abu Zeid, popularly known as Shawkan, has won the UNESCO World Press Freedom Prize 2018.
- He was arrested in August 2013 for covering deadly demonstration at Rabaa Al-Adawiya Square in Cairo (Egypt’s capital) between security forces and supporters of ousted Islamist president Mohammed Morsi.

New Appointments
- US President Donald Trump's nominee Jim Bridenstine today took office as the 13th administrator of NASA.
- He has replaced replaced former administrator Charles Bolden who left office on 20th January 2017.
- With this Bridenstine becamethe first NASA chief with a non-scientific background.

- Technology giant Google has partnered with job search platforms including LinkedIn and QuikrJobs to roll out a feature in India which will allow users to look for employment opportunities in Search.
- This feature offers filters like location, type, and field, and is available on the Search app for both Android and iOS users.
