International Current Affairs
- 48th International Earth Day is being observed today.
- The world's first ever Earth Day was celebrated on 22nd April 1970, in the United States of America to increase public awareness about environmental problems.
- It was founded by United States Senator Gaylord Nelson, as a reaction to a massive oil spill in California in 1969.
- The aim of the day is to bring attention to environmental issues to spark changes that will result in a healthy, sustainable environment.
- Theme of International Earth Day 2018 : "End Plastic Pollution"
- In a bid to strengthen cooperation along economic lines, India participated at the BRICS Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors meeting in Washington DC.
National Current Affairs
- President Ram Nath Kovind today signed the ordinance allowing courts to award death penalty to those convicted of raping children 12 years of age or younger.
- The Union Cabinet had approved the ordinance yesterday, following widespread protests against the Unnao and Kathua rape cases.
- The cabinet has approved restructured Rashtriya Gram Swaraj Abhiyan (RGSA) aimed at making rural local bodies self-sustainable, financially stable and more efficient.
- The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has decided to roll out ‘Integrated initiative for prevention & control of viral hepatitis’ under National Health Mission (NHM) for prevention and control of viral hepatitis.
- The initiative will have budgetary support of more than Rs. 517 crore for three years.
- Important Note ; India is committed to eliminating the viral hepatitis by 2030.
- The 1st International SME (Small, Medium Enterprises) convention started at New Delhi today.
- One hundred and fifty participants from 31 countries and 400 entrepreneurs from India are participating in the four day convention.
- Aim of this Convention : To provide platform to allow Entrepreneur to Entrepreneur (E2E) exchange of ideas, free and fair business discussions, mutual sizing of opportunities and ways to address them.
New Appointments
- The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has appointed its 1st woman firefighter, Taniya Sanyal.
- Sanyal has been appointed to AAI’s eastern region airports that include Kolkata, Patna, and Ranchi, among others.
- Note : Considered a profession only for men, AAI till recently did not have recruitment norms for women firefighters.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
- The Union Cabinet has approved the promulgation of the Fugitive Economic Offenders Ordinance, which will empower authorities to seize assets of economic offenders who flee India.
- The ordinance is aimed at forcing offenders to return to India to face prosecution.
- The total deposits in accounts opened under Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana has crossed ₹80,000 crore mark as on 11th April 2018.
- Further, the number of account holders has increased to 31.45 crore from 26.5 crore at the beginning of 2017 with Uttar Pradesh having the highest number of account holders.
- Private sector lender HDFC Bank has reported a 20.2% year-on-year increase in profit to ₹4,799 crore for the March quarter.
- The bank's net interest income during the quarter rose by 17.7% year-on-year to ₹10,657.7 crore.
- India and Finland have reached an agreement on the tax dispute with Nokia under Mutual Agreement Procedure (MAP) system.
- This involves payment of Rs 1,600 crore, a sum that was deposited with government by Nokia in March 2018.
Deaths
- Nabi Tajima (117), the world's oldest person and the last known to be born in the 19th century, has passed away.
- She became the world's oldest person in September last year following the death of Jamaica's Violet Brown.
- Actor Verne Troyer (49), who starred in the Austin Powers movies as 'Mini-Me' and a Harry Potter movie as Griphook, died today.
MOUs & Agreements
- Hydro power major Sutlej Jal Vidut Nigam (SJVN) Limited has signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Ministry of Power for generating 9200 million units for the year 2018-19.

- Shahid Kapoor was honoured with the Dadasaheb Phalke Excellence Award for his performance in Sanjay Leela Bhansali directorial 'Padmaavat'.

- Best actor people’s choice award : Ranveer Singh
- Entertainer of the year : Kartik Aryan

- Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) professor Parag Pathak has been awarded the John Bates Clark Medal for 2018, granted annually to the best economist under the age of 40.
- He was awarded for his work on market design and education policy.
- American NFL star Colin Kaepernick, who kneeled during the US national anthem as a protest against racial inequality, was honoured by Amnesty International with their Ambassador of Conscience Award for 2018.
- The Indian government has released a Commemorative Stamp to honour Indian women's cricket team fast bowler Jhulan Goswami for becoming the first woman cricketer to take 200 wickets in ODIs.
Sports Current Affairs
- Barcelona thrashed Sevilla 5-0 to lift their fourth straight and 30th overall Copa del Rey title, an annual football cup competition for Spanish football teams.
