Meet the new President of Myanmar : Win Myint

Myanmar today elected a 66 year old lawyer, Win Myint, as the country's next President. With this he became 10th President of Myanmar. He will replace U Htin Kyaw, who resigned last week after two years on the job. 

Myint was the Speaker of the House of Representatives of Myanmar from 2016 to 2018. He also served as MP for House of Representatives from 2012 to 2018.

Myanmar’s military ruled the country for a half-century during which it was accused of widespread abuses before partially handing power to a civilian government in 2016. It is still in charge of security matters and still faces accusations of rights abuses.

As president, he will be constrained by both the military-drafted Constitution and the strong hand of Ms. Aung San Suu Kyi.
