Hai Friends I'm Kani. Here I'm sharing English Vocabulary from Editorial section of The Hindu News Paper dated 12th March 2018. Happy reading :)

Hindu Editorial Topic 1 : "A welcome quietus: on Hadiya case verdict"
  • Quietus - an end to something, usually something unpleasant
  • Verdict - an official judgment made in a court
  • Unjustified - not fair, or not based on any good reason
  • Curious - unusual and interesting
  • Muddle - a confused situation or condition
  • Annull - to state officially that something such as a marriage, an agreement, or an election has no legal authority
  • Solely - involving nothing except the person or thing mentioned
  • Suspicion - a feeling that someone has done something wrong
  • Ruse - a plan or trick used for hiding your true intentions
  • Scuttle - to move quickly, with small, short steps, especially in order to escape
  • Habeas corpus - a judge’s order to bring a prisoner into court so that the court can decide whether the prisoner should stay in prison or not
  • Proceedings - the actions taken, usually in court, to settle a legal matter
  • Indoctrinate - to teach someone a set of beliefs so thoroughly that they do not accept any other ideas
  • Brainwash - to force someone to accept a particular set of beliefs by repeating the same idea many times so that the person cannot think in an independent way
  • Embrace - to completely accept something such as a new belief, idea, or way of life
  • Victim - someone who has been harmed, injured, or killed as the result of a crime
  • Overseas - happening or existing in a country across the sea from your country
  • Confinement - a situation in which someone is forced to stay in a place and not allowed to leave
  • Categorical - clear and definite about what you mean
  • Invalidate - to make something such as a document, contract, or process no longer legally effective
  • Writ - an official document that tells someone to do something or to stop doing something
  • Jurisdiction - the right or power to make legal decisions
  • Unjustified - not fair, or not based on any good reason
  • Curtail - to stop something before it is finished, or to reduce or limit something
  • Apex - the top or highest part of something that ends in a point
  • Custody -  the protection or care of someone or something
  • Homoeopathy - a way of treating illness by giving small amounts of natural substances that in large amounts would cause the illness
  • Amid - if something happens amid particular feelings or events, it happens while people have these feelings or while these events are happening
  • Radical - a radical person or group believes that important political or social changes are necessary
  • Veracity - truth, or honesty
  • Sham - something that people pretend is good, serious, or honest but is really not
  • Vulnerable - weak or easy to hurt physically or mentally
  • Conspiracy - a secret plan by a group of people to do something bad or illegal, especially in politics
  • Primacy - the fact of being more powerful or important than anything else
  • Implication - a possible effect or result
  • Ordeal - an extremely unpleasant experience, especially one that lasts for a long time
  • Disquieting - making you feel very worried or nervous
  • Volition - the power or ability to decide something by yourself and to take action to get what you want
  • Autonomy - the power to make your own decisions
  • Curtail - to reduce or limit something
  • Impede - to make it more difficult for someone to do something or more difficult for something to happen
  • Sway - to influence or change someone’s opinion
  • Mere - only / just

  • Evacuate - to leave a building or other place because it is not safe
  • Reach out - to try to communicate with a person or a group of people
  • Besiege -  to surround a place with an army and prevent the people there from getting food and supplies, as a way of getting control of it
  • Enclave - an area of a country or city where a particular group of people live
  • Rebel - someone who tries to remove a government or leader using force
  • Formerly - in the past
  • Province - one of many areas into which some countries are divided
  • Regime - a system or form of government
  • Bombardment - an attack on a place made by dropping bombs from planes or by firing large guns for a long time
  • Apocalypse - a time when the whole world will be destroyed
  • Backer - someone who gives help or money to a plan or organization
  • Unanimous - a unanimous decision, vote, agreement etc is one that everyone agrees with and supports
  • Ceasefire - an agreement to stop fighting for a period of time, especially in order to discuss permanent peace
  • Hostility - opposition to something
  • Eerie - strange and mysterious, and sometimes frightening
  • Conflict - angry disagreement between people or groups
  • Endanger - to put someone or something into a situation where they might be harmed or damaged
  • The sooner the better - used for saying that you want something to be as soon/big/quick etc as possible
