Hindu Editorial Topic 1 : "Alliance divided: on Sri Lankan politics"
  • Alliance - a group of people, organizations, or countries who have united to work together to achieve something
  • In the throes of something - involved in a difficult or unpleasant situation or activity
  • Crisis - an urgent, difficult, or dangerous situation
  • Coalition - a temporary union of different political parties that agree to form a government together
  • Dramatic - sudden and surprising or easy to notice
  • Fissure - disagreement
  • Fragile - used about a situation, agreement, or relationship that can easily be damaged or destroyed

  • Drought - a long period of time when there is little or no rain and crops die
  • Campaign - a series of actions intended to produce political or social change
  • Indict - to accuse someone officially of a serious crime

  • Foresaw - to see or know something that will happen in the future

  • Imperative - extremely important and urgent
  • Reform - a change that is intended to correct a situation that is wrong or unfair, or make a system work more effectively
  • Disillusionment - the disappointed feeling you have when you discover that someone or something is not as good as you had believed
  • Unrest - angry or violent behaviour by people who are protesting against something
