International Current Affairs
  • The 1st part of the Oxford English Dictionary was published on this day (1st February) in the year 1884.
    • Published originally as 'A New English Dictionary on Historical Principles', it was called the 'Oxford English Dictionary' for the first time in 1895.
    • Under the editorship of James Murray, the final and 126th part of the dictionary was published in 1928, 44 years after publication began.
  • Rwanda has become the 1st low-income country to provide universal eye care to its entire 1.2 crore population. 
  • India has slipped to 42nd place in recently released Global Democracy Index (GDI) 2017 amid “rise of conservative religious ideologies” and increase in vigilantism and violence against minorities as well as other dissenting voices. 
    • Last year India ranked 32nd.

National Current Affairs
  • Today (1st February) is 41st Indian Coast Guard Day.
    • The interim Indian Coast Guard came into being on 1 February 1977, equipped with two small corvettes and five patrol boats transferred from the Navy.
    • The Indian Coast Guard's mission is to assist mariners and safeguard life and property at sea.
  • 15th Death anniversary of 1st Indian American woman in space Kalpana Chawla is being observed today.
    • She died when the space shuttle of NASA disintegrated on re-entering Earth's atmosphere on February 1, 2003.
  • The Maharashtra government has announced a scheme titled 'Asmita' under which a packet of sanitary pads will be made available to seven lakh girls from government schools in rural parts for ₹5. 
    • The scheme will cover girls aged between 11 and 19 and nearly 1.75 crore rural women, who will receive two types of packets for ₹24 and ₹29 each.

  • Legendary Bengali actor Soumitra Chatterjee (83) was awarded France’s highest civilian award, Legion d’Honneur
    • He was honored with this prestigious award in recognition of his remarkable career and his outstanding contribution in promoting Indian cinema in France and his long-standing attraction for our country.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • The Union Budget 2018-19 was presented by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley in the Parliament today. 
    • In a break from tradition, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has presented the Union Budget 2018 in both Hindi and English. 
    • It is the last full budget of PM Narendra Modi's government before the 2019 elections and the country's first Union Budget after the implementation of Goods and Services Tax.

  • In his budget speech, the Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has announced that the Indian government does not consider cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin a legal tender and will take all possible measures to curb their use for illegal activities.
  • Hong Kong today voted to ban ivory sales by 2021. 
    • Important Note : Hong Kong is considered as the world's largest ivory retail market.
  • The Ministry of Commerce & Industry has launched the 3rd version of the Government e-Marketplace (GeM 3.0)
    • What is GeM ? 
    • GeM is an Online Market platform to facilitate procurement of goods and services by various Ministries and agencies of the Government. 
    • It has been envisaged as National Procurement Portal of India.
    • The earlier version GeM 2.0 was launched as pilot project in August 2016.
Science & Technology
  • South Korean electronics giant Samsung has started manufacturing hardware specialized for Bitcoin mining
    • The move will see Samsung supply the chips to a Chinese company that makes Bitcoin mining equipment.
  • State-run Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) for first time has successfully flown home-made 5.8-tonne Light Combat Helicopter (LCH) with its own automatic flight control system.
New Appointments
  • Distinguished scientist Dinesh Srivastava took over as Chief Executive of Nuclear Fuel Complex (NFC)
    • He has replaced G Kalyanakrishnan who retired on superannuation. 
  • 1982 batch officer of Indian Information Service (IIS) Neelam Kapoor has been appointed as the Director General (DG) of the Sports Authority of India (SAI)
Sports Current Affairs
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has launched the first 'Khelo India' school games at Delhi's Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium.
    • Talented players identified by a government committee at the games will be provided with an annual assistance of ₹5 lakh for eight years. 
    • 199 gold, 199 silver, and 275 bronze medals will be awarded at the week-long games.
