International Current Affairs
  • South African President Jacob Zuma has resigned from the post after defying a 48-hour deadline given by the ruling African National Congress (ANC) to leave the office. 
  • Nepal Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba resigned opening the door for the Left alliance to form the next government, over two months after his party faced a debacle in the country's historic parliamentary and local polls.
    • Note : The CPN-UML (Communist Party of Nepal) picked party chairman Khadga Prasad Sharma Oli as the next Prime Minister of Nepal.
  • China is going to host Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit 2018 at Qingdao, eastern Shandong Province in June 2018. 
    • Kazakhstan (Astana) hosted the last year's summit during 8-9th June 2017.
    • About Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) :
      • Formed on : 15th June 2001
      • Headquarters :Beijing, China
      • Members : 8
    • Note : India, Pakistan become full members of SCO on 9th June 2017.
  • 'Paschim Lehar', a tri-service maritime exercise was held at India's westerncoast. 
    • Around 40 ships, submarines and fighter aircraft participated in this exercise.
    • Objective : To build interoperability.
  • Venezuela and Libya were suspended from voting in United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in 2018-19 session for not paying dues to 193-member world body. 
    • Note : It is for third time in three years these countries have been suspended from voting for unpaid dues.
National Current Affairs
  • The Centre today announced that Karnataka's Hampi monuments will be among the 10  destinations selected as 'Iconic Tourism' sites
    • Other selected sites include the Taj Mahal, Konark Sun Temple, and Ajanta and Ellora caves.
    • Note : In his Union Budget speech, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley had said that the sites will be provided support for holistic infrastructure and skill development.
  • The Union Health Ministry has passed a proposal that makes it mandatory for Indian students to clear National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) to obtain an eligibility certificate for applying to medical colleges abroad. 
  • West Bengal became the 1st state to opt out of Centre’s National Health Protection Scheme (NHPS) announced in Union Budget 2018-19. 
    • According to State Government, it has already made hospitalisation and medical treatment free for its citizens and has already enrolled 50 lakh people under its Swasthya Sathi programme.
  • President Ram Nath Kovind hosted 'LPG Panchayat' at Rashtrapati Bhavan. 
    • Aim of LPG Panchayat : To provide a platform for LPG consumers to interact with each other, promote mutual learning and share experiences.
    • It was organised by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjawala Yojana (PMUY).
  • India started nationwide Tiger census 2018.
    • This is the largest survey of wildlife anywhere in the world.
    • This Rs. 10 crores exercise will involve 40,000 forest guards traversing 4,00,000 sq. km. of forests.
    • The last census, in 2014, had estimated India's tiger population at 2,226, up from 1,706 in 2010.
  • For the first time, India is set to host the 8th Theatre Olympics, the largest international theatre festival, with participation from 30 countries in a series of performances to be held across India.
    • The 51-day-long event will be inaugurated at the majestic Red Fort on February 17 by Vice President Venkaiah Naidu.
    • The festival will be concluded on April 8 with a grand ceremony at the iconic Gateway of India in Mumbai.

  • India’s Aadhaar and Umang App have won awards at recently concluded 6th World Government Summit 2018 in Dubai.
    • Umang App won in Best m-Government Service Award for Accessible Government Category.
    • Aadhaar won in the Best Government Emerging Technologies Award
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • In what could be biggest banking fraud in India, state-owned Punjab National Bank (PNB) announced it has detected a USD 1.77 billion scam.
  • Yes Bank’s MTN (Medium Term Note) bonds issuance has received overwhelming response from international investors. 
    • It has been already listed on London Stock Exchange International Securities Market (LSE ISM) and Singapore Exchange Securities Trading Limited (SGX).
  • The government today proposed to make it easier for small savings scheme holders to close their accounts early as well as permit the opening of such accounts in the name of a minor
    • At present, small savings accounts like public provident fund (PPF) cannot be closed prematurely before the completion of five years.
New Appointments
  • US President Donald J. Trump appointed Lt Gen Paul Nakasone as the next Director of National Security Agency and US Cyber Command.
Sports Current Affairs
  • Tamil Nadu beat Manipur 2-1 to lift their maiden title in 23rd edition of Senior Women's National Football Championship 2017-18 at Barabati Stadium in Cuttack.
  • 4-time champions Pakistan will participate in the upcoming Hockey World Cup which will be hosted in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, later this year. 
    • Note : Pakistan had failed to qualify for the 2014 World Cup and their participation in the 2018 World Cup was doubtful owing to the political relations of India and Pakistan. 
  • Yuki Bhambri became 1st Indian to reach quarter-finals of Chennai Open ATP Challenger Tennis tournament.
