- China is going to build a 'Great Wall' along the border of the Muslim-dominated Xinjiang province to prevent infiltration by militants.
- To boost production of the nutrient-rich millets and the sunrise agri industry, the Indian Government has approved 2018 as National Year of Millets.
- Note : Earlier in November 2017, India had forwarded proposal to United Nations (UN) for declaring year 2018 as ‘International Year of Millets’.
- Ahead of the nation's Republic Day on 26th January, the Microblogging site Twitter has introduced an 'India Gate' emoji.
- The emoji appears when you type hashtags including '#RepublicDay' and '#HappyRepublicDay' while composing a tweet.
- To reduce stress caused by parents over marks, the Madhya Pradesh Education Department has decided to replace marks with smileys in the report cards of Class 1 and 2 government school students.
- Students will be given one, two, or three smileys, depending on how well they have grasped the subject.
- Patiala House Court in Delhi has become the first trial court to have a permanent National Flag across the country.
- The 50-feet high Tricolour, installed by the Central Public Works Department, was unfurled by the Delhi High Court Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal.
- The 1st International Dam Safety Conference-2018 was recently held in Kovalam, Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala) from January 23-24, 2018.
- This conference was inaugurated by Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and was presided over by Union Minister of State for Water Resources Arjun Ram Meghwal.
- For the poor and disabled people, Manipur chief Minister N Biren Singh has launched a health assurance scheme titled Chief Minister-gi Hakshelgi Tengbang (CMHT).
- The CMHT scheme will provide cashless treatment to poor at government hospitals, health centres and other empanelled selected private hospitals.
MOUs & Agreements
- India has signed $120 million loan agreement with multilateral lending agency World Bank to help increase access to improved water supply services in peri-urban areas in Uttarakhand.
- The agreement was signed between Government of India, Government of Uttarakhand and World Bank Board.
New Appointments
- Noted scientist S Somanath took charge as Director of Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala.
- He has replaced K Sivan, who was recently appointed as Chairman of ISRO.
- Cab-hailing startup Uber has hired Bo Young Lee as its first Chief Diversity Officer (CD).
Science & Technology
- The second indigenously built offshore patrol vessel (OPV) named Vijaya built by Larsen and Toubro (L&T) Shipyard for Indian Coast Guard (ICG) was launched at Kattupalli Shipyard, Tamil Nadu.
- It is expected to be inducted into service by September 2018 after trials on the equipment.
Awards & Honors
- Former cricketer Sachin Tendulkar's biopic 'Sachin: A Billion Dreams' has won 2 awards at the recently concluded 11th Tehran International FICTS Festival 2018.
- The biopic's director James Erskine got the award for the 'Best Director of a Long Documentary', and an honorary diploma.
- Producer Ravi Bhagchandka received the 'Special Award for the Best Film' in the Long Documentary section.
- Hollywood actress Meryl Streep received her 21st Oscar nomination for the movie titled 'The Post'.
- With this she breaks her own record as the most nominated actress in Oscar history.
- Note : The actress has won three Oscar Awards to date.
- Rachel Morrison has become the first female cinematographer to receive an Oscar nomination in the 89-year-old history of the Awards.
- She has been nominated for her work in the film 'Mudbound'.
- Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palanichamy received UNESCO Award of Merit awarded to the iconic Srirangam Ranganathaswamy temple in Tiruchirapalli.
- This award was announced on 2nd November 2017.
- With this, Srirangam Temple has became the first temple in Tamil Nadu to be given the prestigious award from the UN body.

- The book titled 'Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House' is recently in news due to it's controversial subject.
- This book details the behavior of U.S. President Donald Trump and staff of his 2016 presidential campaign and White House.
