Hindu Editorial Topic 1 : "Vigil on vigilantes: on the Supreme Court's reminder"
  • Vigil - a quiet political protest held at night
  • Vigilante - a person who tries in an unofficial way to prevent crime, or to catch and punish someone who has committed a crime
  • Stern - serious / strong
  • Aggressive - behaving in an angry or rude way that shows you want to fight, attack, or argue with someone
  • Crack down - to start dealing with someone or something much more strictly
  • Mob - a large crowd of people that is dangerous or difficult to control
  • Counsel - one or more of the lawyers taking part in a legal case
  • Instance - an example of something happening
  • Allegedly - if someone allegedly does something, another person says that they have done it, even though this has not been proved
  • Bovine - relating to cows
  • Commonplace - happening often or often seen or experienced and so not considered to be special
  • Writ - an official document that tells someone to do something or to stop doing something
  • Lynching - to kill someone by hanging them by the neck, even though they have not been proved guilty of any crime
  • Accuse - to say that someone has done something wrong or committed a crime
  • Immunity - a situation in which someone is not affected by something such as a law because they have a special job or position
  • Slaughter - the killing of animals, usually for their meat
  • Proceeding - the actions taken, usually in court, to settle a legal matter
  • Curbing - to control or limit something that is harmful
  • Obvious - clear to almost anyone
  • Victim - someone who has been harmed, injured, or killed as the result of a crime
  • Culprit - someone who is responsible for doing something bad or illegal
  • Recourse - the use of something so that you can get what you want or need in a difficult situation
  • Empower - to give a person or organization the legal authority to do something
  • Credibility - the quality of being trusted and believed in
  • Deficit - a lack of a quality, skill, or ability that you should have
  • Dispensation - official permission to do something that people are not normally allowed to do, especially from a religious authority
  • Cattle - cows and bulls kept by farmers for their milk or meat
  • Administer - to be responsible for making certain that something is done according to the rules
  • Livelihood - something such as your work that provides the money that you need to live

  • Commodity - something that can be bought and sold, especially a basic food product or fuel
  • Witness - to see something happen
  • Bull run - a period during which prices of shares on the stock market are generally rising

  • Premature - happening too soon or before the usual time
  • Predict - to say what you think will happen in the future
  • Massive - very large or heavy
  • Inflation - an economic process in which prices increase so that money becomes less valuable
  • Reminiscent - similar to something else
  • Boom - a sudden major increase in trade, profits etc in a particular country or region
  • Rally - an increase in the value of something after a period when its value has been low
  • Infrastructure - the set of systems within a place or organization that affect how well it operates, for example the telephone and transport systems in a country
  • Curb - to control or limit something
  • Speculator - a person who invests in stocks, property, or other ventures in the hope of making a profit
  • In anticipation of - in preparation for something happening
  • Inadequate - not enough, or not good enough for a particular purpose
  • Slowdown - a period when there is less activity
  • Substantially - by a large amount or degree
  • Stimulus - anything that encourages something to happen, develop, or improve
  • Impact - an effect, or an influence
  • Outlier - a result that is very different from the other results in a set
  • Vital - very important, necessary, or essential
  • Vis-a-vis - compared to or relating to someone or something
  • Euphoria - a feeling of great happiness that usually lasts for a short time only
  • Contrast - something that is different from something else in a very noticeable way
  • In tandem - together and at the same time
  • Backed by - supported by
  • Outlook - an idea about what a situation will be like in the future
