International Current Affairs
  • Today (21st September) is International Day of Peace / World Peace Day.
    • This day was first celebrated in 1982, and is kept by many nations, political groups, military groups, and peoples.
    • In 2013, for the first time, the Day was dedicated by the Secretary-General of the United Nations to peace education, the key preventive means to reduce war sustainably.
    • Note : To inaugurate the day, the United Nations Peace Bell is rung at UN Headquarters (in New York City). This bell is cast from coins donated by children from all continents except Africa, and was a gift from the United Nations Association of Japan, as "a reminder of the human cost of war"; the inscription on its side reads, "Long live absolute world peace". 
    • Themes of International Day of Peace / World Peace Day 2017 : “Together for Peace: Respect, Safety and Dignity for All.”
  • Today (21st September) is World Alzheimer’s Day.
    • Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia, a group of disorders that impairs mental functioning.
    • This is a day on which Alzheimer’s organizations around the world concentrate their efforts on raising awareness about Alzheimer’s and dementia.

  • The Eiffel Tower in Paris will soon get a bullet-proof glass wall along its base in a bid to improve security around the monument. 
  • In a move aimed at boosting productivity and economic growth, Saudi Arabia has lifted its ban on voice and video calling apps such as WhatsApp and Skype.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • The State Bank of India (SBI) today announced that cheque books of six banks that merged with it in April this year would become invalid from September 30. 
    • The bank has asked customers to submit applications for getting replacements of their cheque books. 
    • Note : IFSC codes of these banks will also become invalid from September 30.
  • The US Federal Reserve today kept its key interest rates unchanged at up to 1.25% but signalled it still expects one more increase by the end of the year.
  • India is collaborating with Russia to build Rooppur nuclear power plant in Bangladesh.
    • Important Points to Note
      • This will be first initiative under an India-Russia nuclear deal to undertake atomic energy projects in third countries.
      • This is Bangladesh’s first atomic energy project
      • This is also India’s first atomic energy venture abroad.
  • The government today launched a mobile application for central government employees who are about to retire to help them monitor the progress of their pension settlement cases. 
    • Retired employees can assess their superannuation funds and record complaints through the pension calculator. 
  • The Union Government has issued gazette notification, notifying that Peer-to-peer lending (P2P) platforms will be treated as Non-banking financial companies (NBFCs) and thus regulated by Reserve Bank of India (RBI).
    • The notification will help Peer to Peer lenders to gain official recognition and opens new avenues for fund-raising and business expansion. 
    • It also ends the regulatory vacuum in which P2P lending firms were operating.
Science & Technology
  • China today started operating the world's fastest bullet train, Fuxing, between Beijing and Shanghai.
    • The train, with an average speed of 350 km/hr and maximum speed of 400 km/hr, will cover the 1,250-kilometres distance in 4 hours 30 minutes. 
  • The Afghan Air Force today received its first four US-made UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters as part of a planned replacement of its ageing fleet of Russian-made Mi-17 helicopters. 
  • The Department of Science and Technology (DST), India is planning to fund project to develop quantum computers in order to tap into the next big advance in computing technology.
Deaths
  • Legendary American boxer Jake LaMotta (95) passed away.
    • He is famously known as 'The Bronx Bull'. 
    • The former world middleweight boxing champion, who was the subject of Martin Scorsese's 1980 film 'Raging Bull', had a career record of 83 wins, 19 losses, 4 draws, and 30 knockouts.
