International Current Affairs
  • India - Japan Annual Summit began today at Mahatma Mandir, Gandhinagar.
    • PM Narendra Modi and his Japanese counterpart  Shinzo Abe are sharing dais of the Summit.
    • During this summit, both PMs will review the progress in the multifaceted co-operation between India and Japan under the framework of their ‘Special Strategic and Global Partnership’.
  • India has been placed at a rank of 103rd out of 130, the lowest among BRICS economies, on the World Economic Forum's Global Human Capital Index 2017
    • It is also the lowest among G20 nations. 
    • The index has been topped by Norway.
    • Top 10 countries of World Economic Forum's Global Human Capital Index 2017 :

      • Germany

  • The German nationality has been named the best in the world for the sixth year in a row, according to the Kochenov Quality of Nationality Index
    • The index takes into account various factors including the country's economic growth and level of human development. 
      • Note : While Denmark and France came joint second, India was ranked 101 among 159 countries.
  • Israel supports the establishment of an independent Kurdish state, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced today. 
    • This comes after the Iraqi Parliament rejected the planned Kurdish independence referendum to be held later this month claiming it will cause instability in the country.
  • Russia had dropped the world's largest non-nuclear weapon, popularly known as the 'Father Of All Bombs' (FOAB), on ISIS in the Syrian city of Deir ez-Zor last week.
    • Note : Russia's FOAB is 4 times more powerful than the 'Mother of All Bombs' that the US dropped on ISIS in Afghanistan.
  • The central government has decided to grant citizenship to nearly one lakh Chakma and Hajong refugees who have been settled in Arunachal Pradesh since the 1960s. 
    • The refugees had fled to India to escape alleged religious persecution in Bangladesh. 
  • India and Russia have begun discussions to work out modalities for conducting their first tri-service military exercise INDRA 2017 in October 2017 in Russia. 
    • Note : It will be India’s first bilateral military exercise with any country involving all three services. 
National Current Affairs
  • Today (14th September) is 'Hindi Diwas  (हिंदी दिवस)'.
    • This day is celebrated every year on 14th September across the country as the language was adopted as an official language of the Indian union by the Constituent Assembly on this day in 1949. 
    • While there are 22 scheduled languages in India, only Hindi and English are official languages. 
    • Important Note : There is no national language of India.
  • Karnataka has become the first Indian state to have an electric vehicle policy after the state Cabinet approved the Karnataka Electric Vehicle and Energy Storage Policy today. 
    • The policy aims to encourage production of electric vehicles to reduce pollution and promote research and development of electric mobility. 
  • The External Affairs Ministry has launched Operation Insaniyat to provide humanitarian assistance to Bangladesh on account of the large influx of Rohingya Muslims in the country. 
    • Under the operation, the government will send multiple consignments of relief materials required urgently by the refugees like eatables, mosquito nets. 
  • PM Narendra Modi and Japanese PM Shinzo Abe jointly laid the foundation stone of India's first Bullet Train project at Ahmedabad today. 
    • Running at a top speed of 350 kilometres per hour, it will reduce the Ahmedabad-Mumbai travel time from 7-8 hours to around 2 hours. 
    • The 508-km-long rail project is expected to complete by August 15, 2022.
  • The Haryana council of ministers today decided to create one Wi-Fi zone in all 6,078 Gram Panchayats within two years and provide 4G services in every village in the next three years. 
    • The state government has also promised broadband connectivity to every household and Wi-Fi zone at important public places in all towns and cities.
  • The Union Ministry of Environment and Forests and Climate Change (MoEFCC) has launched “Wood is Good Campaign" under Partnership for Land Use Science (Forest-Plus).
    • It was launched on sidelines of two-day conference on “Sustainable landscapes and forest ecosystems: Theory to Practice” in New Delhi.
    • Aim of this campaign : To promote wood as climate-friendly resource and substitute to materials like steel and plastic as it is carbon neutral unlike others materials which leave carbon footprint in their production.

Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • World Bank President Jim Yong Kim has announced that $8 billion has been allocated for infrastructure projects under China's Silk Road initiative.
    • Note : The Silk Road initiative is aimed at creating an economic corridor connecting China with Asia, Europe and the rest of the world.
  • Sri Lanka is going to open its first official marijuana plantation to ensure high-quality supplies for medicinal purposes as well as for exports to the US.

Awards & Honors
  • US-based fellowship The Marconi Society will honour 2 Indian-origin scientists for their contribution in the field of communication and information technology. 
    • IIT Bombay alumnus Arun Netravali will get the $100,000 Marconi prize for his work in video technology. 
    • Ex-Stanford Prof and Padma Bhushan awardee Thomas Kailath will get Lifetime Achievement Award for contribution to modern communication.
Sports Current Affairs
  • The International Olympic Committee (IOC) today officially awarded the 2024 Summer Olympic Games to Paris and the 2028 edition to Los Angeles following a vote in Peru's capital Lima. 
    • Important Note : Paris will be hosting the quadrennial event 100 years after its last Games in 1924.
