International Current Affairs
- Today (19th August 2017) is World Photography Day.
- This day aims to inspire photographers across the planet to share single photo with world.
- World Photography Day 2017 Theme : “Understanding clouds”
- Today is World Humanitarian Day (WHD).
- This day is observed every year on 19 August to recognize work of humanitarian personnel and those who have lost their lives working for humanitarian causes.
- Theme of the year 2017 : “#NotATarget”.
- Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath today launched 'Swachh Uttar Pradesh, Swasth Uttar Pradesh' campaign and swept a street in Gorakhpur under the initiative.
- Aim of this campaign : To fight encephalitis, adding that its prevention starts with sanitation.
- The Centre has doubled the allowance for women employees with disabilities to ₹3,000 per month for taking care of their newborn child from the existing ₹1,500 per month
- The Karnataka government has decided to rename 100 Morarji Desai government residential schools after former PM Indira Gandhi.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
- The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) will shortly issue new banknotes of ₹ 50 rupee denomination in the Mahatma Gandhi (New) Series.
- The base colour of the new notes will be Fluorescent Blue and its dimension will be 66 mm x 135 mm.
- This new denomination will have a motif of 'Hampi with Chariot', depicting India's cultural heritage.
- 5 Indian-origin people have featured in Fortune's 2017 40 Under 40 list of most influential young people in business.
- They are :
- Leo Varadkar (38 years),
- Divya Nag (26 years),
- Rishi Shah (31 years),
- Shradha Agarwal (32 years)
- Leila Janah (31 years)
- Note : This list has been topped by French President Emmanuel Macron (39) who is France’s youngest leader since Napoleon and had won presidential elections in May 2017.
- Australia plans to strengthen its anti-money laundering laws and regulate digital currencies such as Bitcoin in the wake of a financial scandal involving its biggest bank, Commonwealth Bank of Australia.
- Note : Japan is the 1st country to regulate cryptocurrencies, including bitcoin.
Science & Technology
- The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has successfully launched Tracking and Data Relay Satellite-M (TDRS-M) into orbit.
- TDRS-M is third and final satellite in a series of the Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS), next generation communications satellites.
New Appointments
- Russian President Vladimir Putin today appointed career diplomat Nikolay Kudashev as Russia's new Ambassador to India.
- His appointment comes nearly seven months after the death of Russia's previous ambassador to India Alexander Kadakin.
Sports Current Affairs
- The Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) has appointed 7 women officials as support referees for the Under-17 World Cup in India.
- Important Points to Note :
- This is the first-ever time that female referees will officiate in a men's tournament organised by FIFA.
- The Under-17 World Cup is India's first FIFA event.
