International Current Affairs
  • Today (30th July) is World Day against Trafficking in Persons.
    • This day was established by the UN General Assembly in the year 2013.
    • Aim of this Day : To raise awareness of the plight of victims of human trafficking and to protect their rights.  
    • Theme of World Day against Trafficking in Persons 2017 : ‘Act to Protect and Assist Trafficked Persons
National Current affairs
  • Bihar CM Nitish Kumar today expanded the Cabinet, inducting 27 new ministers which included 14 JD(U), 12 BJP and 1 LJP legislator. 
    • CM Nitish Kumar kept the Home and Personnel, and Department of Monitoring portfolios
    • Deputy CM Sushil Modi was given the Finance, Commerce, Forestry, and IT Department
    • Krishna Nandan Verma got Education Ministry
    • Shravan Kumar got Rural Development and Parliamentary Affairs.
  • On the occasion of its foundation day, the Union Ministry of Earth Science has launched a mobile application titled 'India Quake'. 
    • This app has been developed by the National Centre for Seismology (NCS) for automatic dissemination of earthquake parameter (location, time and magnitude) after the occurrence of earthquakes
    • Note : The ministry has also launched an integrated information dissemination system titled 'Sagar Vani'. 
      • Sagar Vani is an integrated information dissemination system that will serve the coastal community, especially the fishermen community with the advisories and alerts towards their livelihood as well as their safety at Sea.
  • Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia has directed the Art, Culture and Languages department to prepare a proposal for the formation of 12 language academies promoting the language and culture of different regions. 
    • The languages include Bengali, Marathi, Telugu, Kannada, Assamese, Kumaoni and Kashmiri among others. 
    • Note : In it's earlier budget, the Delhi government had promised promotion of languages.
  • The Supreme Court today ruled that the police cannot arrest the accused without conducting a preliminary inquiry under dowry harassment cases
    • With this, apex court put an end to immediate arrest of the husband and his family members in the dowry harassment cases filed under Section 498A of Indian Penal Code (IPC). 
    • The Supreme Court passed this order keeping in view the fact of suspected misuse of the anti-dowry harassment law framed in 1983.
Science & Technology
  • The world's smallest spacecraft ever launched have successfully been placed in low Earth orbit by ISRO's PSLV rocket. 
    • Named Sprites, the 3.5cmx3.5cm space probes weigh 4 grams each and run on sunlight. 
  • The Delhi Metro Railway Corporation (DMRC) has become the world’s first completely ‘green’ Metro system for adhering to green building norms for its residential colonies. 
    • In this regard, Delhi Metro has secured the platinum rating for adherence to green building norms for its 10 residential colonies from the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC).

  • Former Union Minister Ashwani Kumar was conferred with the Japan’s imperial decoration ‘Order of the Rising Sun’ award for his contribution to fostering Japan-India ties.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • Minister of State for Finance Santosh Gangwar has today announced that shifting the financial year from April-March cycle to January-December will not happen next year (2018)
    • He said that in order to do so, the government needs to present the Union Budget in November, which doesn't seem possible. 
    • Important Note : The April-March financial year was adopted in 1867 to align with British government.
  • India tripled its milk production in the first quarter of the 21st century and is expected to become the world's biggest milk-producing nation, according to an OECD-FAO report. 
    • Note : It will be one-third more than second-placed European Union.
  • India is the world's third-largest beef exporter and is expected to retain the spot in 2026, according to the OECD-FAO Agricultural Outlook 2017-2026 report. 
    • Note : Brazil was ranked top beef exporter and Australia came second.
  • The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has received final nod from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to function as the Bharat Bill Payment Central Unit (BBPCU) and operate the Bharat Bill Payment System (BBPS)
    • Note : The total number of Bharat Bill Payment Operating Units certified by NPCI now stands at 24 [10 private sector banks, 3 public sector banks (Bank of Baroda, Union Bank of India and Indian Overseas Bank), five cooperative banks and six non-bank biller aggregators].
MOUs & Agreements
  • Sri Lanka has signed a US $1.1 billion deal to sell a 70% stake of the strategic Hambantota deep-sea port to China.
