Hindu Editorial Topic 1 : "We need Paris: on U.S pulling out of climate deal"
  • Pulling out - to stop being involved in an activity, event, or situation
  • Climate - the type of weather that a country or region has
  • Pact - an agreement between two or more people or organizations in which they promise to do something
  • Abandoning - to suddenly leave someone or something
  • Adopt - to decide to start using a particular idea, plan, or method
  • Backward-looking - not interested in new ideas or ways of doing things
  • Emission - a substance, especially a gas, that goes into the air
  • Contempt - a feeling that someone or something is unimportant and deserves no respect
  • Hard-won - achieved only after a lot of effort
  • Incongruent - not suitable or not fitting well with something else
  • Retailing - the business of selling goods directly to the public for their own use
  • Fossil fuel - a fuel such as coal or oil, made from decayed material from animals or plants that lived many thousands of years ago
  • Reaping - to get something as a result of something that you do
  • Progressively - gradually and steadily
  • Misery - the state of being extremely unhappy or uncomfortable
  • Successive - coming or happening one after another in a series
  • Mitigate - to reduce the harmful effects of something
  • Abdicated - to stop accepting a particular responsibility or obligation that you have
  • Heartening - making you feel happy or happier
  • Greenhouse gas - a gas that stops heat from escaping from the atmosphere and causes the greenhouse effect (Carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas)
  • Impact - an effect, or an influence
  • Levelled off - to stop becoming more or less, and remain the same
  • In spite of something - used for referring to a fact that makes something else surprising
  • Assertion - a definite statement or claim that something is true
  • Intensity - strength
  • Ambitious - an ambitious plan, aim, or attempt is difficult and will need a lot of effort to succeed
  • Renewable - renewable energy and natural materials replace themselves by natural processes, so that they are never completely used up
  • Momentum -  progress or development that is becoming faster or stronger
  • Cope with - to deal successfully with a difficult situation
  • Underpin - to be an important basic part of something, allowing it to succeed or continue to exist
  • Accumulate - to get more and more of something over a period of time

  • Caution - careful thought and lack of hurry in order to try to avoid risks or danger
  • Arbitrary - not based on any particular plan, or not done for any particular reason
  • Detention - the state of being kept in a police station or prison and not being allowed to leave
  • Timely - happening at the most suitable time
  • Preventive - done so that something does not become worse or turn into a problem
  • Confer - to give something such as authority, a legal right, or an honour to someone
  • Discretionary - based on someone’s judgment of a particular situation rather than on a set of rules
  • Touchstone - a standard that is used for testing or judging other things
  • Adherence - the action of continuing to obey a rule, law, agreement etc
  • Prescribed - decided by a law or a rule
  • Invocation - to use a law in order to achieve something
  • Draconian - extremely strict and severe
  • Offender - someone who has committed a crime
  • Prejudicial - harmful to someone or something
  • Rhetorical - relating to a style of speaking or writing that is effective or intended to influence people
  • Incantation - words that are repeated together several times because they are thought to have special power
  • Allegedly - if someone allegedly does something, another person says that they have done it, even though this has not been proved
  • Spurious - not real
  • Extraneous - not relating to the subject or situation that you are dealing with
  • Recourse - the use of something so that you can get what you want or need in a difficult situation
  • Deterrent - something that makes people decide not to do something by making them realize that something unpleasant could happen to them
  • Statutory - controlled by a law or statute
  • Habitual - used for describing a person who has a particular bad habit
  • Extraneous - not relating to the subject or situation that you are dealing with
  • Merely - only / just
  • For instance - for example
  • Molest - to hurt someone, by touching them in a sexual way or by forcing them to do sexual acts
  • Detain - to keep someone in a police station or prison and not allow them to leave
  • Overtly - not hidden or secret
  • Pathological - pathological behaviour or feelings are not based on reason and cannot be controlled by the person experiencing them
  • Brazen - behaving in a way that is not moral or socially acceptable, and not caring if other people are shocked or offended
  • Violation - an action that is in opposition to a law, agreement, principle etc
  • Vigil - a quiet political protest held at night
  • Civil war - a war fought between different groups of people within the same country
  • Flimsy - weak and difficult to believe
  • Trial - the process of examining a case in a court of law and deciding whether someone is guilty or innocent
  • Draconian - extremely strict and severe
