  • India has jumped 12 places to the 40th rank in the World Economic Forum Global Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Report 2017
    • Spain topped the list, followed by France and Germany.

  • A 'Yoga Club' inspired by Indian spiritual leader Sri Sri Ravi Shankar was inaugurated at the Japanese Parliament by Ravi Shankar himself today. 
    • Over hundred parliamentarians have already signed up to be members of the club, officials said.
National Current Affairs
  • Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar has announced the state's Sex ratio at birth touched 950 girls to 1,000 boys in March, crossing the mark for the first time in the state. 
    • Palwal and Narnaul districts registered a higher sex ratio for girls, recording 1,217 and 1,279 respectively. 
    • Note : Haryana's sex ratio had crossed 900 for the first time last year.
  • English will be taught as a compulsory subject from class 1 in all government-run schools in Uttar Pradesh, Deputy CM Dinesh Sharma announced today.
    • Note : English was till now being taught as a compulsory subject from class 5.
  • Uttarakhand's government today decided to denotify state highways falling in the area of local civic bodies and categorise them as other district roads. 
    • The decision, expected to provide relief to liquor vends after the alcohol ban near highways, will denotify 63 of 64 state highways.
  • The Maharashtra Legislative Assembly today passed a bill that seeks to prevent attacks on journalists and media houses
    • Introduced by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, the bill was passed without discussion in the absence of opposition members in the lower house. 
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi will launch a special digital exhibition titled 'Bapu Ko Karyanjali' on the Champaran Satyagraha on Monday. 
    • The initiative is aimed at re-envisioning the theme of the movement undertaken by Mahatma Gandhi a century ago to improve the condition of people in the Champaran district of Bihar.
    • It is also expected to generate awareness about cleanliness.
MOUs & Agreements
  • Following Indian PM Narendra Modi's meeting with his Bangladeshi counterpart Sheikh Hasina today, the two countries signed 22 agreements in various key sectors. 
    • PM Modi announced a Line of Credit of ₹3,213.5 crore for Bangladesh's defence procurement and ₹28,921 crore for projects in priority sectors.
    • India would partner Bangladesh in the goal of power for all by 2021, he added.
  • Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) has announced that it has signed a $2 billion (nearly ₹13,000 crore) contract with India to supply advanced medium-range surface-to-air missile systems. 
    • IAI said it was their largest defence contract. IAI added that it would also supply additional long-range air and missile defence systems for the first locally-made Indian aircraft carrier.

  • UN Secretary General António Guterres has selected Malala Yousafzai as a UN Messenger of Peace, the highest honour bestowed by the UN chief on a global citizen.
    • Malala, also the youngest Nobel Peace Prize winner, will be officially designated at a ceremony on Monday.
  • The Uttar Pradesh government has given its clearance to the project of building a music village in Varanasi in honour of legendary shehnai player Ustad Bismillah Khan
    • The village, to be named as 'Bismillah Khan Sangeet Gram', will have a museum centre, a training-cum-research centre among other things associated with musical 'gharanas'.

  • Justice Indira Banerjee was sworn-in as the Chief Justice of the Madras High Court today.
    • Important Note : With Banerjee's appointment, High Courts in four major metropolitan cities are being headed by women for the first time in Indian history
      • While Delhi HC chief G Rohini took over in 2014, Nishita Mhatre is heading Calcutta HC since December 2016 and Manjula Chellur is leading Bombay HC since August 2016.
  • The US Senate today confirmed President Donald Trump's pick Neil Gorsuch as the Supreme Court Justice.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • The Centre has informed the Supreme Court it has taken a "conscious decision" to not extend the period beyond December 30, 2016 for exchanging demonetised notes of ₹1,000 and ₹500. 
    • For non-resident Indians the deadline ended on March 31. 
Sports Current Affairs
  • The National Basketball Association (NBA) has launched the first NBA Basketball School in Mumbai today. 
    • The school is part of NBA's initiative of a network of tuition-based basketball development programmes, open to international male and female players aged between 6 to 18.
  • Indian boxer K Shyam Kumar won a Gold medal at the Thailand International Tournament today after getting a walkover in the final.
  • Pakistan's former captain Younis Khan announced today that he will retire from Test cricket after the completion of the Test series against West Indies, bringing an end to his 17-year-long Test career. 
    • The 39-year-old has featured in 115 Tests and has scored 9,977 runs at an average of 53.06, with 34 centuries to his name so far.
  • Gujarat Lions' captain Suresh Raina went past Virat Kohli's tally of 4,110 runs to become the leading run-getter of the Indian Premier League with 4,166 runs.
