International Current Affairs
  • Former US President Barack Obama, during his final hours in office, authorised the transfer of around $227 million to foreign accounts, of which around $221 million (over ₹1,500 crore) was issued to Palestine.
    • Around $4 million (over ₹27 crore) was transferred to climate change programs and $1.25 million (over ₹8.5 crore) to the UN Peacebuilding Fund.
  • US President Donald Trump's administration has barred scientists at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) from posting updates on social media and speaking to reporters.
  • According to the recently data released by the Pentagon, the United States has spent around $10.7 billion (₹72,865 crore) on fighting the Islamic state under 'Operation Inherent Resolve'.
  • Turkey, Russia and Iran have reached agreement on forming a three-party mechanism to monitor ceasefire violations in Syria, concluding the talks held in Kazakhstan's capital Astana. 
    • Note : Iran and Russia support the Syrian government, while Turkey supports rebels opposing the government. 
MOUs & Agreements
  • During the ongoing visit of Abu Dhabi’s Crown Prince Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, India and UAE signed an MoU to establish cooperation in identified fields of defence manufacturing and technology.
    • This agreement enables the two sides to cooperate in areas of armaments, defence industries and transfer of technology. Both the countries signed a total of 14 MoUs.
National Current Affairs
  • Today is 7th National Voters’ Day.
    • The date (25th January) was declared as the National Voters' Day in the year 2011 as the Election Commission of India was founded on 25 January 1950. 
    • The day aims at increasing the enrolment of voters, especially encourage participation of newly eligible young voters and ensure universal adult franchise.
    • Theme of National Voter's Day 2017 : 'Empowering Young and Future Voters'
  • Nearly one year after all Central University vice-chancellors decided to install the national flag on their campuses, Delhi University's Hansraj College today hoisted its first monumental flag
    • DU is the first public university in the country to get a monumental flagpole, according to the Flag Foundation of India. 
  • India's third largest retail chain — Defence Canteens — will only accept plastic money from March 1.
Recent Committees in News
  • The Chief Ministers' panel on Digital Payments today recommended levying a banking cash transaction tax on transactions of ₹50,000 and above. 
    • The panel also recommended the abolition of merchant discount rate to make digital payments cheaper than cash. 
    • The panel's other recommendations include tax incentives for micro ATMs, biometric sensors and tax refund for consumers using digital payment.
    • The panel was headed by : Chandrababu Naidu (Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh)
Science & Technology
  • Japan today launched Kirameki-2 (kee-RAH-meh-kee 2), its first military communications satellite that is designed to upgrade its network in the face of China's increasingly assertive maritime activity and North Korea's missile threat.
    • It is the first of three satellites that will replace three civilian ones currently used by Japan's military. 
    • The new satellites will allow military units to communicate on a high-speed and high-capacity network.
Awards & Honors
  • 19 soldiers of the 4 and 9 Para, the special forces' units which undertook the cross-border surgical strike across LoC, were awarded gallantry medals on the eve of Republic Day. 
    • Major Rohit Suri of 4 Para, who led one of the teams across the LoC targeting terrorists' launch pads, was awarded the Kirti Chakra, the second highest peacetime gallantry award.
  • President Pranab Mukherjee today approved the conferment of Jeevan Raksha Padak Series of Awards 2016 to 36 persons. 
    • This is given to a person for a meritorious act of humane nature in saving the life of a person. 
    • Persons of either sex in all walks of life are eligible for these awards, and it can also be conferred posthumously.
Sports Current Affairs
  • The ICC named 4 women in a nine-umpire strong panel to officiate in next month's ICC Women's World Cup Qualifier 2017
    • They are, 
      • Kathleen Cross (New Zealand), 
      • Sue Redfern (England), 
      • Claire Polosak (Australia), 
      • Jacqueline Williams (West Indies)
    • This move is a part of ICC's efforts towards the overall growth and development of women’s cricket.
  • All India Football Federation (AIFF) today launched India's first ever women's professional football league titled the Indian Women's League
    • This tournament will be played at Delhi's Ambedkar Stadium between six teams across two weeks starting January 28. 
    • The six teams, based out of Haryana, Puducherry, Mizoram, Maharashtra, Odisha and Manipur, would play each other in a round-robin format.
Question of the Day
  • How is India's Union Budget made?
    • To make the budget, Finance Ministry collects receipts and expenditure information from various departments, holds discussions with industry bodies, and prepares revised estimates. 
    • The process takes place in complete secrecy with scrutiny by the Intelligence Bureau and the budget is printed at the North Block in Delhi. 
    • Officials are kept in isolation for over a week before the presentation.
