International Current Affairs
  • Businessman-turned-politician Donald Trump sworn-in as 45th President of the US at the Inauguration Day ceremony in Washington DC. 
    • He vowed to rebuild the country 'with American hands'. 
    • He concluded inaugural address with campaign slogan : Yes, together we will make America great again.
    • He signed his first executive order, directing government agencies to scale back Obamacare.
      • During his campaigns, Trump had promised to dismantle the health care law, which required Americans to have health insurance or pay a tax penalty. 
      • Note : The Senate last week voted to draft a legislation repealing Barack Obama's Affordable Care Act or Obamacare.
  • Vice President Hamid Ansari today extended an invitation to his newly-appointed US counterpart Michael Richard Pence to visit India.
  • In an attempt to finalise the cooperation agreement, India and UAE today held their first strategic dialogue
    • During the meeting, the two sides discussed several issues ranging from cooperation in the areas of trade and investments to the areas of energy security and renewable energy, defence and security, electronics and information technology and space.
  • The government is planning to build a rail link connecting neighbouring nations Bhutan, Myanmar, Bangladesh, and Nepal, Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu has announced today. 
    • Further, he informed that work was on to connect all the eight state capitals of the north-east.
National Current Affairs
  • The states Manipur, Tripura and Meghalaya are today celebrating 45th Statehood Day
    • The three states attained statehood in 1972 under the North-Eastern Areas (Re-organisation) Act, 1971. 
    • While Meghalaya was a part of Assam before becoming a full-fledged state, Manipur and Tripura were Union Territories before 1972.
  • The Centre today cleared the ordinance on Jallikattu proposed by the Tamil Nadu government.
    • This move will allow the state to take the ordinance route to promulgate the bull-taming sport
    • CM O.Panneerselvam is going to launch Jallikattu at Alanganallur in Madurai tomorrow morning.
  • The Bihar government today launched 'Nasha Mukt' (addiction-free) state campaign, after formation of human chain across the state.
    • Besides Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, over two crore people have participated in this human chain. 
    • This human chain will be for 45 minutes starting from 12.15 in the afternoon.
  • In a bid to check bogus technical colleges, the Haryana government has put the names of such fake educational institutions on a website and issued guidelines in this regard.
    • A list of “fake universities” is also available on the University Grants Commission website under the link ‘For Students’, sub-link ‘Fake Universities'.
  • Kerala would be declared 100% Open Defecation Free state by the end of March this year, State Governor P Sathasivam announced today.
    • Kerala would then join Himachal Pradesh and Sikkim which have already been declared as Open Defecation Free states. 
    • Note : Rural Kerala was declared as 'Open Defecation Free' in November 2016.
  • The food regulator in India will soon label chips, samosas as junk food to make a clear distinction between healthy food and unhealthy food. 
    • Note : India will be one of the few countries that has decided to label packaged food as junk, if they contain high levels of fat, salt, and sugar, beyond a level.
Banking & Economic Affairs 
  • India's largest warship INS Vikramaditya is going to get an ATM onboard tomorrow.
    • Important Points to Note
      • With this, INS Vikramaditya will become the 2nd Indian warship to have an ATM. 
      • The ATM will belong to India's largest lender State Bank of India (SBI).
      • It will be operated through a satellite link and the services will begin from Saturday evening.
  • President Pranab Mukherjee has approved changes in government rules to allow merger of the Rail Budget with the Union Budget 2017
    • The Union Cabinet had in September 2016, approved the scrapping of the 92-year old practice of presenting a separate Railway Budget and merged it with the Union Budget. The government is expected to present the budget on February 1.
New Appointments
  • Retired General James Mattis was sworn in as US Secretary of Defense, making him the first cabinet member of President Donald Trump to be cleared to take office.
  • Mike Pence was sworn in as the 48th Vice President of the United States at the Inauguration Day ceremony in Washington DC. 
    • He  had earlier served as the Governor of Indiana.
Awards & Honors
  • Former Miss Universe Sushmita Sen has confirmed that she is on the judging panel of the upcoming 65th edition of the Miss Universe pageant
    • Note : She was crowned Miss Universe in Manila, Philippines in 1994.
