Friends, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has announced the winners of Nobel Prize for Physics for the year 2016 today. This award was divided, one half awarded to David J. Thouless, the other half jointly to F. Duncan M. Haldane and J. Michael Kosterlitz.

They discovered totally unexpected behaviours of solid materials - and came up with a mathematical framework ( in the field of topology) to explain these weird properties. The discoveries have paved the way for designing new materials with all sorts of novel properties.
Note : The 2015 Nobel Prize in Physics was jointly awarded to Takaaki Kajita of Japan and Arthur McDonald of Canada for their work to reveal how neutrinos – elusive subatomic particles – change identities or ‘flavours’, and expand our understanding of the innermost workings of matter and the universe.

This is the Second award in Nobel Prizes 2016. Yesterday the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for the year 2016 has been awarded to Japanese cell biologist Yoshinori Ohsumi for his discoveries on how cells recycle their content, a process known as autophagy. The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine is awarded by the Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, Sweden.
