Topic 1 : "Disquiet over Cauvery’s flows"

  • Disquiet - worry
  • Cauvery - Kaveri (river in south India which rises in north Kerala)
  • Dispute -  an argument or disagreement (especially an official one between)
  • Deficit -  the amount by which something is too small
  • Sub-basin - a large area of land whose surface water all flows into a particular river or lake
  • Conceived - to invent a plan or an idea
  • Monitor - to regularly check something or watch someone in order to find out what is happening
  • Emphatic - done or said in a strong way and without any doubt
  • Integral - necessary and important as a part of a whole
  • Irrigation - the method in which water is supplied to plants at regular intervals for agriculture
  • Downstream - in the direction a river or stream is flowing
  • Forbid - to state that something is not allowed, according to a rule, law, or custom
  • Intervening - take part in something to change the result
  • Inter-State - existing or taking place between states
  • Streak - part of
  • Twisted logic - to use false logic
  • Tribunal - a special court or group of people who are officially chosen, especially by the government, to examine (legal) problems of a particular type
  • Invoked - to use a law or rule in order to achieve something
  • Subvert - to attack or harm a government or established system of law, politics etc
  • Crucial - extremely important or necessary
  • Contravention - the action of doing something that is not allowed by a rule, law, or agreement
  • Hasty - done in a hurry because you do not have much time
  • U-turn - a complete change from one opinion or plan of action to an opposite one
  • At play - to do something for enjoyment or interest, without much care and effort
  • High stakes - involves a lot of risk or serious consequences
  • In contrast - used when you are comparing two things or people and saying that the second one is very different from the first
  • Seized - take hold of suddenly and forcibly
  • Certain - having no doubts that something is true
  • Depoliticising - to cause something or someone to have no political connections
  • Well-thought-out - well planned
  • Mechanism - a way of doing something that is planned or part of a system
  • Distress - an unpleasant and difficult situation

Topic 2 : "Cricket’s ranking put to the Test"

  • Put something to the Test - to find out how good or how effective someone or something is
  • Ascent - the process of moving to a higher level or position
  • Cheer - encouragement
  • Tumult - a loud noise caused by a large mass of people
  • Sparring - arguing
  • Administrative - relating to the management of a company, organization, or institution
  • Reform - to make an improvement
  • Victory - an occasion when you win a game, competition etc
  • Paving the way for something - to make something possible
  • Triumph - a great victory or success
  • Instance - an example of something happening
  • Significant - very important
  • Stint - a period of time spent doing something
  • Irrespective - despite a particular fact, situation, or quality
  • Squad - a sports team
  • Evolving - to gradually change and develop over a period of time
  • Pang - a very strong, sudden, and unpleasant pain or emotion
  • Transition - the process of changing from one situation, form, or state to another
  • Big shoes to fill - to have to meet high expectations about something that came before
  • Dominance - a situation in which one person or thing has more influence or power than any other
  • No mean achievement - a great achievement
  • Packed with something - to fill something with things or people of a particular type
  • Contemporary - modern, or relating to the present time
  • Great - someone who is admired by a lot of people, especially someone famous
  • In contrast - used when you are comparing two things or people and saying that the second one is very different from the first
  • Pivot - the central or most important person or thing in a situation
  • Emergence - the process of appearing or becoming recognized
  • Dilemma - a situation in which you have to make a difficult decision
  • Firm up - to become more certain or less likely to change
  • Re-establish - to return something to an earlier good condition or position
  • Solidity - the quality of being solid (strong)
  • Over-reliant on somebody - completely depends on somebody
  • Shortcomings - a fault or a failure to reach a particular standard
  • Sort out - to do what is necessary to deal with a problem, disagreement, or difficult situation successfully
  • Displaced - to force something out of its position
  • Reign - a period of time during which a particular person, group, or thing is very important or a powerful influence
  • Nonetheless - despite what has just been said
  • Subcontinental - a large area of land that forms part of a continent, especially the part of Asia that contains the countries of India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh
