International Affairs
  • Chinese President Xi Jinping and British Prime Minister David Cameron signed a number of investment agreements including one to finance nuclear power stations in Britain.
    • The agreement is the first major Chinese investment in a Western nuclear facility. 
    • China’s General Nuclear Corporation (CGN) will take a one-third stake in the planned 18 billion pound Hinkley Point nuclear plant in southwest England, controlled by France’s EDF.

National Affairs
  • Dussehra, the festival of victory of good over evil, being celebrated across the country.
  • Delhi observes its first car-free day today.
    • The aim of this day is to encourage people to use public transport.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi today laid the foundation stone of the new Andhra Pradesh
    capital Amravati.
  • Nation remembers freedom fighter Ashfaqullah Khan (22nd October 1900 - 19th December 1927) on his 115th birth anniversary today.
  • The Ministry of Urban Development has approved the first batch of state level Action Plans under Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) aimed at enabling water supply as per the norm and providing water supply and sewerage connections to all urban households. 
    • Note : An inter-ministerial Apex Committee of AMRUT chaired by Madhusudhan Prasad, Secretary (Urban Development) cleared plans worth Rs.2,786.28 cr in this regard for 89 cities in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat and Rajasthan yesterday.
    • This is for the first time that the Urban Development Ministry approved state level plans unlike the past practice of appraising and approving individual projects.
  • The Ministry of Defence has divided the erstwhile Maharashtra and Gujarat Naval Areas into two separate headquarters.
    • It was divided into two under Flag Officer Maharashtra Area and Flag Officer Gujarat Naval Area.
    • This was done with an objective to enhance operational and administrative structure of the organisation.

Business & Economy
  • In its first ever acquisition, Reliance Capital Asset Management (RCAM) today announced takeover of global giant Goldman Sachs’ mutual fund business in India for Rs 243 crore in an all-cash deal as yet another foreign player exits the Rs 13 lakh crore Indian MF market.

  • President Pranab Mukherjee will tomorrow confer the Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowships and Sangeet Natak Akademi Awards for the year 2014
    • The Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowships (Akademi Ratna Sadasyata) and Sangeet Natak Akademi Awards (Akademi Puraskar) are recognized as the most coveted national honours bestowed on performing artists as well as teachers and scholars in the field of performing arts. 

Books & Authors
  • Reliance Industries chairman Mukesh Ambani launched Noted technocrat Sam Pitroda’s autobiography Dreaming Big- My Journey to Connect India.

New Appointments
  • Former Cabinet Secretary Alok Rawat has been appointed as the first male member of the National Commission for Women, filling the fourth seat in the five-member body.
    • Two other members -- Sushma Sahu and Rekha Sharma - were appointed to the Commission in August.

  • India win 4th ODI by 35 runs against South Africa in Chennai.
  • SainaNehwal lost her World No.1 crown to All England and World champion CarolinaMarin of Spain
