International Affairs
  • Today is World Sleep Day.
    • This day is observed on the Friday of the second week of March
    • This day is being organized by the World Sleep Day Committee of the World Association of Sleep Medicine (WASM) since the year 2008.
    • The aim of this day is to celebrate the benefits of good and healthy sleep and to draw society attention to the burden of sleep problems and their medicine, education and social aspects; to promote sleep disorders prevention and management.
  • India asks Pakistan to take all legal steps to ensure that 26/11 Mumbai terror attack mastermind Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi does not come out of jail as Islamabad High Court orders his release.

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrives in Colombo on a two-day visit to Sri Lanka.
    • This is Narendra Modi's maiden visit to the country
    • This is also the first bilateral tour by an Indian premier in 28 years.
    • Modi visits IPKF (Indian Peace Keeping Force) memorial near to Sri Lankan Parliament at Colombo to pay homage to Indian soldiers who lost their lives while discharging their responsibilities in Sri Lanka during 1987 to 1990.
      • IPKF was formed under the mandate of the Indo-Sri Lankan Accord signed between India and Sri Lanka in 1987 that aimed to end the Sri Lankan Civil War. 
      • The memorial has been constructed by the Sri Lankan government in 2008.
  • India and Sri Lanka signed four agreements, those are
    • Exemption from visa for holders of diplomatic passports
    • Cooperation in mutual assistance in customs
    • MoU for youth development
    • To establish Rabindranath Tagore museum at a Sri Lanka university
  • FinanceMinister Arun Jaitley is on a three-day visit to UK
    • He met UK Chancellor George Osborne and reviewed progress made since 2010 in strengthening and deepening cooperation between Britain and India on economic and financial issues, including increased inward investment in each other's economies.
    • This is his first official visit to UK.
    • Osborne hailed the "increasingly important" relationship between Britain and India's economies.
Deaths
  • British fantasy author Sir Terry Pratchett (66) passed away.
    • He was best known for his satirical fantasy novels series Discworld 
    • He was knighted by the Queen Elizabeth II in 2009 for his services to literature 
    • He was appointed as officer of Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1998
    • In 2010, he was awarded the World Fantasy Award for Life Achievement.
National Affairs
  • The 3rd edition of the Indian Panorama Film Festival began today at Shillong.
    • This festival was inaugurated by Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma with the screening of award winning Marathi film “Dr Prakash Baba Amte: the Real Hero” directed by Samruoddhi Porey.
    • Twelve award winning films will be screened including nine feature films and three non-feature films in nine languages during the three-day festival.
  • The Union Minister of Chemicals & Fertilizers Ananth Kumar launched ‘Pharma Jan Samadhan’ scheme.
    •  It is a web enabled system for redressal of consumers’ grievances relating to pricing and availability of medicines, created by National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA).
    • Mr Kumar also released Compendium of Ceiling Prices of Essential Medicines 2015 prepared by NPPA.
  • The Law Commission of India submitted its report on electoral reforms to the Union Law Ministry.
  • Recommendations 
    • Restrict candidates to contest from one constituency only
    • Appoint CEC and two ECs through a collegium
    • Ban Independents from contesting polls
    • Commission rejects the idea of compulsory voting
    • Regulating government sponsored ads six months prior to date of expiry of the House
    • Period for calculating election expenses of candidates should be extended to apply from the date of notification to date of results
    • Amend Companies Act to require AGM resolution for contribution from the company's funds to a political party

  • NASA has launched four identical spacecrafts on a billion-dollar mission to study the explosive give-and-take of the Earth and sun’s magnetic fields.
Sports
  • The United Arab Emirates won a unanimous vote to host the AFC Asian Cup in 2019
    • AFC president : Sheikh Salman bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa
