National Affairs
- A suspicious fishing boat carrying explosives from Pakistan was intercepted by Indian Coast Guard in Arabian Sea near Indo-Pak maritime boundary but it sank after the crew on board set it on fire.
- The boat carrying some four people blew up some 365 kms off Porbander coast after a hot chase.
- The incident came a month after sixth anniversary of the Mumbai terror attack.
- The government has accepted the recommendations of Bezbaruah Committee that has suggested immediate measures to ensure the safety of people from India's northeast in Delhi and other major cities.
- The committee headed by M.P. Bezbaruah, a member of the North Eastern Council, was set up in February 2014 after a 19-year-old student from Arunachal Pradesh, Nido Tania, died after he was attacked.
- This committee recommends enacting new law to deal with rising crimes against the people from north east.
- Calling people of northeastern origin by "derogatory" names such as "chinki" may land one in jail for up to five years, besides being non-bailable.
- Delhi police to recruit 20 police personnel from each Northeastern State
- Cases related to North Eastern People to be sent to fast track Courts.
- Panel of 7 lawyers including 5 women lawyers formed by Delhi State Legal Service Authority for legal assistance
- The government was considering introducing two new Sections in the IPC, Section 153-C and Section 509-A.
- 153-C : This section relates to imputations and assertions prejudicial to human dignity and makes words, both spoken and written, or signs attempting to discriminate against individuals on the basis or race, or indulging in activity intended to use criminal force or violence against a particular race, a non-bailable offence punishable with imprisonment up to five years with fine
- 509-A : This section seeks to make any word, gesture or act intended to insult a member of a particular race with imprisonment that may extend to three years with fine.
- The Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court has set up a special bench of Justice CR Kumaraswamy to hear the appeals filed by former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa and three others who had questioned their conviction in the disproportionate assets case.
Science & Technology
- India's first inter-planetary mission MOM or Mangalyaan has completed 100 days around Mars.
- The Mars Orbiter launched on 5th November 2013 onboard ISRO's PSLV C25 from Sriharikota entered the Martian orbit on September 24, 2014 after a nine-month long odyssey, making India the first country in the world to succeed in such inter-planetary mission in the maiden attempt itself.
Sports
- The Sports Ministry cleared the name of National Boxing Federation of India as 'Boxing India' (BI) which is already recognized as a permanent member of the International Boxing Association.
- The Sports Ministry stated that the matter was examined in detail and it has no objection to the registration of 'Boxing India' to be the new governing body of the sport.
- Boxing India President said the registration is a stepping stone in expediting the administrative formalities and streamlining the overall functioning and activities of body.
