International Affairs
  • Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif today said that he wanted relations with India based on equality and mutual respect, values which are vital for peace in the region, a media report said.
    • In a meeting with Pakistan High Commissioner to India Abdul Basit in Islamabad, Mr. Sharif said that Pakistan longed for good relations with all countries, including India and desired to achieve peace in the region.

  • Minister for Road Transport, Highways & Shipping, Nitin Gadkari today launched the Logo, Vision, Mission, Website and e-book of NHIDCL.
    • The government has allocated Rs 3,000 crore in the Union Budget 2014-15 for improving highways and state roads in the north east.

  • Freedom fighter Lala Lajpat Rai's (28 January 1865 – 17 November 1928) 149th birth anniversary today.
    • He was popularly known as "Punjab Kesari" (Lion of Punjab)
    • He was part of the Lal Bal Pal trio (Lala Lajpat Rai, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, and Bipin Chandra Pal)
  • The content of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's radio programme "‪‎MannKiBaat‬" with US President Barack Obama will soon be available in an e-book format.
    • This was disclosed by Information and Broadcasting Secretary Bimal Julka in New Delhi today.
  • The Cabinet today approved a base price of Rs 3,705 crore per megahertz (MHz) for 3G spectrum auction, a move which would help the government garner over Rs 1 lakh crore along with sale of other mobile frequencies.

  • After analyzing over four years of data from NASA’s Kepler spacecraft, a team of astronomers has discovered a star, Kepler-444, that is 11.2 billion years old and has at least five Earth-size planets.
    • This star is 25 percent smaller than our Sun and is 117 light years from Earth.
  • With an aim to curb rising menace of cybercrimes, Gujarat Technological University (GTU) of Ahmedabad has launched e-Raksha Research Centre that will encourage research and enhance capability to provide solution for issues related to cyber security

  • Rajasthan Governor Kalyan Singh today sworn-in as the Himachal Pradesh Governor (additional charge)
    • He succeeds Urmila Singh who retired January 26 on completing her five-year term.
    • He will be the 26th Governor of the state.
  • Ace Malayalam film actor Mala Aravindan (76) passed away.
    • Known as comedian Mala, he had acted in 650-odd films in a career spanning four decades.
  • Australian Open 2015 
    • Novak Djokovic reached his 25th Grand Slam semifinal by beating No. 8 Milos Raonic.
    • In women's singles top-seed and five times winner Serena Williams enters semis.
    • Sania Mirza and Leander Paes alongwith their partners progress to the semi-finals in the mixed doubles.
  • Sean Abbott, the bowler who was unwittingly at the centre of the tragic death of Phillip Hughes, was named Australia’s young cricketer of the year.
    • He was awarded for the courage and character shown by him to recover from such a devastating incident.

    State wise Ratio in India in 2011 census

    there are 940 females per 1000 males in the country. If reversed it is 1063 males per 1000 females. Children under 6 years of age has a ratio of 944 females per 1000 males. India ranks number 21 for male per female sex ratio in the World.

    1. Kerala has the highest sex ratio of 1084 female per 1000 male.

    2. Puducherry(U/T) has a sex ratio of 1038 female per 1000 male.

    3. Tamil Nadu has a sex ratio of 995 female per 1000 male.

    4. Andhra Pradesh has a sex ratio of 992 female per 1000 male.

    5. Chhattisgarh has a sex ratio of 991 female per 1000 male.

    4 of bottom five are 4 union territories and that includes Delhi at number four.

    1. Daman in Daman & Diu(U/T) has the lowest sex ratio of only 618 females per 1000 male.

    3. Chandigarh has a sex ratio of 818 female per 1000 male.
