International Affairs
  • The International Day for the Abolition of Slavery observed today.
    • The day marks the date of the adoption, by the General Assembly, of the United Nations Convention for the Suppression of the Traffic in Persons and of the Exploitation of the Prostitution of Others.
    • The focus of this day is on eradicating contemporary forms of slavery, such as trafficking in persons, sexual exploitation, the worst forms of child labour, forced marriage, and the forced recruitment of children for use in armed conflict.
  • Today is World Computer Literacy Day.
  • UN climate summit begins in Peru
    • Amid rising emissions and 2014 threatening to be the hottest year in history, India and representatives from over 190 nations began talks at the UN climate summit on a new ambitious and binding deal to cut global carbon emissions ahead of next year's deadline.
    • The 12-day meeting has to agree on a draft agreement which would form the cornerstone of a historic deal to be signed in Paris in December 2015 and take effect by 2020.
  • NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg said today that NATO will launch a non-combat mission in Afghanistan on the first of January in 2015.
    • The mission named "Resolute Support" aimed to train, advise and assist Afghan security force.
National Affairs
  • Today is National Pollution Control Day
    • This day is celebrated every year in India in order to give the honor and memorialize the thousands of human beings who had lost their existence because of the Bhopal gas calamity.
    • Bhopal gas tragedy was happened in the night of 2nd and 3rd December in the year 1984 because of the unintentional discharge of the poisonous chemical known as Methyl Isocyanate (also called MIC) as well as some other chemicals released from the Union Carbide Chemical Plant positioned in the city.
  • The birthday of the former Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee on the 25th of December will be observed as National Good Governance Day.
    • The decision has been taken by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the BJP Parliamentary Board meeting held today.
  • The Supreme Court has held that a person with criminal antecedents should not be allowed to enter the police force, even if he or she is acquitted or discharged.
  • Parliament panel asks government to bring bill to ratify Indo-Bangla Land Boundary Agreement.
  • Delhi’s Lt Governor Najeeb Jung today set up a special investigation team (SIT) to probe into the fire at St Sebastian’s Church at Dilshad Garden which the Christian community alleged was “deliberate”.
  • A Bill seeking stringent punishment including death penalty for hijackers was approved by the Union Cabinet tonight.
    • The government will now withdraw the Anti-Hijacking Amendment Bill, 2010 and introduce a new legislation.
  • The government today cleared a Bill on coal block auctions to replace an ordinance that was promulgated to begin auction of coal mines that were cancelled by the Supreme Court.
  • Within months of the new Companies Act coming into force, the government today cleared a slew of changes to this law to make it easier for corporates to do business and to ensure severe punishment for those raising illegal deposits from the public.
  • Government today approved highway projects worth Rs 3,873.6 crore in Odisha, Uttrakhand and Uttar Pradesh for widening various stretches under its flagship road building programme NHDP.
  • Indian Railways proposes to introduce Wi-Fi services at 400 railway stations ('A1' & 'A' category) throughout the country and in select trains.
Deaths
  • Former Chief Minister of Maharashtra and a veteran Congressman, Abdul Rahman Antulay (85), widely known as A. R. Antulay, passed away
    • He also served as the Union Minister for Minority Affairs in the UPA-I government.
  • Veteran Hindi film and television actor Deven Verma (77) passed away
    • Verma had worked in several famous films and was particularly known for his comic roles in films such as Angoor, Golmaal, Rang Birangi, Chori Mera Kaam and Chor Ke Ghar Chor among others.
Business & Economy
  • Reserve Bank of India Governor Raghuram Rajan left interest rates unchanged for the fifth time in a row, awaiting firm signals that consumer price inflation will slide convincingly and remain low for a long time.
    • But he gave a strong indication that rate cuts could come early in 2015.
  • Government today approved amendments to a law to strengthen capital base and financial stability of Regional Rural Banks (RRBs).
    • The amendments to the RRBs Act, 1976 were cleared by the Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and would be introduced in Parliament.
    • The amendments are aimed to enhance authorised and issued capital to strengthen their capital base and to bring flexibility in the shareholding between Central Government, State Government and sponsor bank, said an official statement.
  • India and France have agreed to iron out contentious issues like pricing and a guarantee clause for French firm Dassault to fast-track the estimated $15 billion deal for 126 Rafale fighter jets.

  • Boyhood ,a film which took 12 years in making, wins top honours at the NewYork Film Critics awards.
    • Boyhood collected best picture, best director for Richard Linklater and best supporting actress Patricia Arquette.
    • The movie was shot over more than a decade to capture the passage of time in one boy's life from age 5 to 18.
    • Empire Magazine has named Boyhood the top FILM OF THE YEAR on their top 50 films of 2014.
Science & Technology
  • India test-fired nuclear-capable strategic missile Agni-IV from a test range off Odisha coast.
    • It has a range of about four thousand kilometeres. This was the fourth trial of Agni-IV.
Sports
  • Virat Kohli remains second in the latest ICC ODI batsmen rankings while captain  MahendraSingh Dhoni has slipped a place to be ninth as India maintain second spot in the team standings.
    • Medium pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar has dropped a place to be eighth in the bowlers' rankings while left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja is still sitting on ninth.   
  • West zone storm into the final of Deodhar trophy cricket tournament; to clash for title with the East zone tomorrow.
