National Affairs
  • Government will provide free online education to all in the country and it is taking steps in this direction.
    • Human Resource Development Minister Smriti Irani said that all government and University libraries will be digitized so that free education could be possible for all the people.
  • Karnataka Government has planned to free the state from open defecation by 2018.
    • To achieve this, the government has envisaged mega toilet building programme.
    • The Minister for Rural Development and Panchayat Raj H K Patil informed that 50 lakh toilets have to be built to end open defecation.
    • Out of which the plan is to build 10 lakh toilets by March next year.
International Affairs
  • World TV Day is celebrated today recognizing it as a symbol for communication and globalisation in contemporary world.
  • World Fisheries day celebrated across Fishing communities to highlight the importance of maintaining fisheries
  • Efforts to prevent domestic violence are insufficient, as a third of women worldwide are physically abused, according to studies published by the World Health Organization. 
    • Between 100 and 140 million women are victims of genital mutilation and 70 million girls are married before 18, often against their will. Also, 7 per cent of women risked being raped in their lifetimes, the study said.
  • In a major step which will further help cement diplomatic ties between India and the United States of America, Prime Minister Narendra Modi invited US President Barack Obama to be the chief guest at next year's Republic Day celebrations, which was readily accepted by the latter.
  • The Supreme Court of India today asked the Centre and the states bordering Nepal to maintain tight vigil on the international border and ensure that no illegal transportation of cattle takes place for being sacrificed during the Gadhimai festival in Nepal, which is going to begin from 28th November 2014.

    • It is a month-long Hindu festival that is held once every five years at the Gadhimai temple of Bariyarpur, in Bara District
    • The event involves the world's second largest sacrificial slaughter of animals (approx. 250,000, after Thanksgiving and Id) including water buffaloes, pigs, goats, chicken and pigeons – with the goal of pleasing Gadhimai, the goddess of power.
  • Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe today dissolved the Lower House of Parliament for a snap election, widely speculated to be on Dec 14, as he seeks a fresh mandate for his economic blitz.
  • The world must cut CO2 emissions to zero by 2070 at the latest to keep global warming below dangerous levels and prevent a global catastrophe, the U.N. warns.
  • The World Health Organization confirmed that the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) was Ebola-free, as 42 days had passed since the last case in an outbreak that killed at least 49 people.
  • US President Barack Obama today bypassed Congress to announce the most sweeping reform to fix America's "broken" immigration system to protect 5 million illegal workers from deportation, a move that could also benefit thousands of Indian techies seeking the Green Card.

  • Forced to take the legal route after being denied the honour initially, Boxer Manoj Kumar will be bestowed the Arjuna Award by Sports Minister Sarbananda Sonowal in New Delhi on 26th November2014.
    • Manoj, a 2010 Commonwealth Games gold-medallist, was earlier denied the Arjuna Award by the Kapil Dev-led selection committee even as another boxer Jai Bhagwan was recommended for the coveted honour.
    • Manoj took the legal route and filed a case in the Delhi high court. He won the case and that led to the ministry accepting his nomination for the award.

  • Mangalyaan has been named among the best inventions of 2014 by Time magazine which described it as a technological feat that will allow India to flex its "interplanetary muscles."

  • The Cabinet has approved Three big power projects of worth 81,000 crore rupees to strengthen the power distribution and transmission in the Urban and rural areas in the country.
    • These projects are aimed at to provide 24x7 electricity across India by 2019.
