- Puducherry today celebrated its Liberation Day with great fervor.
- It was on 1st of November 1954 that treaty of De Facto merger was signed by India and France ending 280 years of French rule in Puducherry, Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam.
- Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav today launched the State Nutrition Mission and expressed confidence that the project would help end malnutrition among children and women as concerted efforts helped curb polio in the state.

- The eight-day 20th Kolkata International Film Festival, which goes underway from 10th November 2014, would become competitive for the first time since its inception.

- State-owned Oil and Natural Gas Corp (ONGC) has adopted the historic monument 'Jantar Mantar' as part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's cleanliness drive, Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.
- With this initiative, ONGC and its employees will maintain cleanliness in and around the heritage monument.
Business & Economy
- As per the Reserve Bank's new guidelines that comes into force from today (1st November 2014), bank customers in six metros — Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad and Bangalore — are allowed to withdraw money and/or carry out non-financial transactions like mini-statements at ATMs of banks, where they hold saving/current accounts, free of charge only five times a month.
- Using ATMs to withdraw money or for other purposes like balance enquiry beyond five times in a month will attract a levy of Rs 20 per transaction from today.
- Besides, the number of free transactions at ATMs (Automated Teller Machines) of non-home banks has been cut to three times a month from five times.
- Declining prices of crude oil and food will help lower inflation, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said and expressed confidence that economic growth in the current fiscal will be in the 5.5-5.9 per cent range.
- Giving an idea of the nature of next year's Budget, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today said it should be "full of new ideas" with transformational and measurable deliverables.

- The government today slashed import tariff value on gold to USD 391 per 10 grams and silver to USD 551 per kg following weak global price trends.
- Gold is the second largest import item for India after petroleum.
- Gold import increased for the second straight month to 95 tonnes in September ahead of festival season.

- China today successfully completed its first return mission to the moon with its unmanned orbiter landing back on Earth, becoming only the third country in the world to do so after the former Soviet Union and the US accomplished the feat about 40 years ago.

- Left fuming by the West Indian cricketers’ mid-series pullout due to a pay dispute with their Board, the BCCI has slapped a damages claim to the tune of Rs. 250 crore ($42 million) on the WICB (West Indies Cricket Board).
