  • The European Union (EU) has lifted its decade-long economic sanctions on Zimbabwe in a move that will see the trading bloc extending 234 million Euros (about 300 million dollars) to support programmess in the country.
  • The government of Burkina Faso (a landlocked country in West Africa) collapsed as demonstrators protesting President Blaise Compaoré’s plans to stay in office after 27 years surged through the streets of Ouagadougou, the capital, overrunning state broadcasters, setting fire to Parliament and burning the homes of the president’s relatives.
    • President declares a state of emergency.

  • Nation celebrates 139th birth anniversary of Iron Man of India, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel as “National Unity Day
    • He is first Home Minister and Deputy Prime Minister of India 
  • Prime Minister flags off ‘Run for Unity marathon' at Rajpath.
    • He received some of Sardar's personal belongings from Sheila Ghatate of Manjiri Trust, Delhi.
  • Gujarat Chief Minister Anandiben Patel laid foundation stone of the Statue of Unity - the world's tallest statue of Iron man of India Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.
    • This statue will be of 182 metres (597 ft) tall.
    • This will be created directly facing the Narmada Dam, 3.2 km away on the river island called Sadhu Bet near Vadodara in Gujarat.
    • The estimated cost of the statue is, 2979 crore rupees and the work of the project will be completed in 46 months.
  • The Nation remembers former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on her 30th death anniversary today. 
    • She fell to assassins bullets on this day in 1984 at her residence in New Delhi.
    • She is the First Woman Prime Minister of India.
  • Jammu and Kashmir Police busted a Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) sleeper cell in the Srinagar city that were planning to carry out subversive activities in Srinagar city.
  • The World famous Pushkarfair has began today in Rajasthan.
    • This is World's LARGEST camel fair.
  • Parliamentary Standing Committee on Railways has invited suggestions from the public, NGOs, experts and stakeholders on the Railways (Amendment) Bill, 2014.
    • The Bill seeks to prevent the filing of larger number of duplicate cases of compensation claims in different benches of Railways Claims Tribunals.
    • It also seeks to exclude the liability of Railways in accidental falling from the ambit of untoward incident and categorise it separately.

  • All the IITs will adopt 10 villages each and help the government to develop a model for their development as a part of the Unnat Bharat Abhiyan.
    • Unnat Bharat Abhiyan, meant for developing rural India.
      • According to this, each IIT will get 10 villages to take care of. They will gauge the problems of the villages and find solutions

  • Devendra Fadnavis was sworn-in as the chief minister of the first BJP government in Maharashtra.
    • Seven cabinet and two state ministers sworn in along with Mr. Devendra Fadnavis.
Science & Technology
  • Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari today launched the Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) system FASTag on Mumbai - Delhi National Highway, at a function in New Delhi.
    • FASTag is a passive RFID tag affixed at the centre of the windscreen.
    • All you have to do is Recharge your Tag Account and drive through FASTag Lanes at the toll plazas, and appropriate toll would automatically be deducted from your balance.
    • SMS alerts will be sent on the registered mobile number giving information on toll fee deducted and low balance.
Deaths
  • Former Union Carbide chief Warren Anderson (92), wanted in India in connection with the 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy which claimed over 3,000 lives in one of the world's most lethal industrial accidents, has died.
    • Note : Anderson died on September 29 but his death but was not announced by his family till now (was confirmed from public records today).
Banking Awareness
  • Banking Secretary G S Sandhu said that the selection process of chairman and managing director (CMD) of 8 PSU banks will start on November 13 and the appointments will be made by end of November.
    • Earlier this week, the government scrapped the selection of six PSU bank heads (Bank of Baroda (BoB), Canara Bank, Indian Overseas Bank (IOB), Oriental Bank of Commerce, United Bank and Vijaya Bank) and 14 executive directors (EDs) during UPA tenure following a separate panel finding irregularities in the process.
    • Two vacancies of CMDs have arisen in Punjab National Bank and Syndicate Bank due to non-grant of extension and arrest respectively.
