International Affairs
  • Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko visits canada (Ottawa)
    • He spent his trip to Ottawa warmly thanking Canada for its support, but also made it clear his country needs additional assistance through expanded loan agreements, intelligence sharing and freer trade.
  • China backed India's bid for full membership in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), a Beijing-dominated security grouping.
Chinese President's Visit to India
  • India and China inked 12 pacts in a range of areas including railways and outer space as Beijing pledged investments of USD 20 billion over five years in a bid to boost economic ties and address India's concerns over trade deficit. Below are few more highlights.
    • Prime Minister Narendra Modi raised the issue of Chinese incursions with the visiting Chinese President Xi Jinping during their meeting.
    • Chinese President expressed hope that China and India will take their strategic and cooperative partnership to a higher plane.
    • India and China signed a Five Year agreement for economic and trade development, followed by one on audio visual co-production.
    • Two agreements on railways-strengthening cooperation and implementation plan.
    • Work plan on drug administration exchanged.
    • Pact on cultural cooperation signed.
    • India and china sign pact on peaceful uses of outer space.
    • Twinning agreement between Mumbai and Shanghai.
    • Xi invites Modi to pay a visit to China early next year.
    • 2015 to be observed as "Visit India" year in China.

National Affairs
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi will launch the 'Make in India' campaign at in Delhi next week at a mega function that will be attended by about a thousand global and domestic business leaders. 
    • He is going to announce major incentives for corporates setting up manufacturing hubs in country
  • The ancient Nalanda University, which had attracted students from the world over, will be formally inaugurated tomorrow in its modern ‘avatar’ by External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj.
    • History
      • Began during the Gupta period in 6th century AD and came to an end after being destroyed in 1193 AD by the invading army of Turkish ruler Qutbuddin Aibak led by his general Bakhtiyar Khilji.
      • After Kalam mooted NU, the Singapore government proposed revival of the ancient University having international character, but suitable to the modern times. 
      • The New University came into existence by a special Act passed by the Parliament – The Nalanda University Act. 
      • The university will have seven schools for postgraduate and doctorate students by its scheduled completion in 2020.
      • Only two of them are currently functioning with 15 students and 11 teachers. Those are,
        • the School of Ecology andEnvironmental Studies
        • the School of Historical studies 
  • India has never followed the "policy of expansionism", Home Minister Rajnath Singh today assured Nepal as he emphasized that security of the two nations are intrinsically linked and there is a need for more focused effort to check terror activities along the border. 
  • Government is targeting about 80 lakh subscribers under its Swavalambam pension scheme, a part of the ambitious financial inclusion Jan-Dhan Yojana, by the end of this fiscal year, the PFRDA Chairman said today.

  • Indian men’s hockey team captain Sardar Singh will be flag bearer of India at 17th Asian Games opening ceremony in Incheon.
  • India slipped eights places to be ranked 158th in the latest FIFA rankings headed by World Champions Germany.
  • Former Italian international and World Cup winner Alessandro del Piero arrived India to be part of the inaugural Indian Super League (ISL) where he would turn out for Delhi Dynamos in the eight-city football league slated for October 12-December 20.
