  • India celebrated its 68th Independence Day today. 
  • PM Modi unfurled the National Flag at Red Fort on Independence Day
  • Narendra Modi addressed the nation from the ramparts of the historical Red Fort in New Delhi. In his maiden Independence Day Speech he spoke on a wide range of issues, from financial inclusion schemes to stressing on need to enhance manufacturing. Here are some highlights
    • Modi launched the 'Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana' to help poor open bank accounts which will come with the facility of a debit card and an insurance cover of Rs 1 lakh.
    • "We should dream of a Digital India. Digital India is a dream for the poor, with broadband connectivity, we can ensure long-distance education," he said
    • Modi asked all MPs to develop  a model village in their constituencies by 2016. 
    • Giving an open invitation to the world to make India a manufacturing hub, He said, "Come make in India. Be it plastics or cars or satellites or agricultural products, come make in India."
    • Modi declared that he would like to run the country on the basis of consensus and not on majority in Parliament and called for a 10-year moratorium on caste and communal violence.
    • He announced that a new institution will be set up to replace the Planning Commission.
  • Pakistan PM Nawaz Sharif greeted PM Modi on India's Independence Day, wished prosperity to the people of India.
  • For the first time ever, Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) played patriotic songs in all its 3800 AC and Non AC low floor buses on this Independence Day.
