Friends, in our last post we have discussed about the introduction of Radar Charts / Spider Charts (you can read that post from here). Today we shall see an example problem of radar chart so that you can easily understand the topic. The below example was taken from last year's SBI Probationary Officers question paper.

Study the below radar graph / chart carefully and answer the following questions.

Number of students (in thousands) in two different universities in six different years.

How to solve Radar Graphs ?

If you closely observe the above graph, you can see two different types of lines. Let us call them red line and blue line. Now start from the year 2007. Make a note of the values on a paper. Keep in mind that all the values are in thousands.
  • Blue Line
    • Started at 10 in the year 2007
    • 15 in the year 2008
    • 25 in the year 2009
    • 20 in the year 2010
    • 25 in the year 2011
    • 35 in the year 2012
  • Red Line :
    • Started at 20 in the year 2007
    • 25 in the year 2008
    • 35 in the year 2009
    • 15 in the year 2010
    • 30 in the year 2011
    • 20 in the year 2012
Now with the above data, let's solve the example problems.

1. In which year was the difference between the number of students in university-1 and the number of students in university-2 highest ?
  1. 2008
  2. 2009
  3. 2010
  4. 2011
  5. 2012
Solution :

The difference between the number of students in both the universities (in thousands)
  • in the year 2007 = 20-10 = 10
  • in the year 2008 = 25-15 = 10
  • in the year 2009 = 35-25 = 10
  • in the year 2010 = 20-15 = 5
  • in the year 2011 = 30-25 = 5
  • in the year 2012 = 35-20 = 15
So, in the year 2012, the difference was highest when compared to remaining years.

2. If 25% of the students in university-2 in the year 2010 were females, what was the number of male students in the university-2 in the same year ?
  1. 11250
  2. 12350
  3. 12500
  4. 11500
  5. 11750
Solution :

The total number of students in the university-2 in 2010 is = 15 thousand
So, the number of boys will be

= 15 x ((100-25)/100))

= 15 x (75 / 100)

= 11.25 (thousand)

= 11250 (Option A)

3. What was the per cent increase in the number of students in university-1 in the year 2011 as compared to the previous year ?
  1. 135
  2. 15
  3. 115
  4. 25
  5. 35
Solution :
In the year 2010, the total number of students in University-1 = 20 thousand
In the year 2011, the total number of students in University-1 = 25 thousand

So, required increase per cent = ((25-25) / 20) x 100 = 25 %

So, the correct answer is, Option 4
4. What was the difference between the number of students in univesity-1 in the year 2010 and the number of students in university-2 in the year 2012?
  1. 0
  2. 5000
  3. 15000
  4. 10000
  5. 1000
Solution :
The Required difference

= 20 thousand - 20 thousand = 0

So, correct answer is Option 1
5. What is the sum of the number of students in university-1 in the year 2007 and the number of students in uniersity-2 in the year 2011 together ?
  1. 50000
  2. 55000
  3. 45000
  4. 57000
  5. 40000
Solution :

The required sum = (10 + 30) thousand

= 40 thousand

= 40000

So, the correct answer is, Option 5
