Shri Narendra Modi, a humble tea-seller’s son who has emerged as India’s most powerful politician in a generation, was on 26th May 2014 (Monday) sworn in as the 15th Prime Minister of India, the world's largest democracy, along with his key colleagues in the Cabinet.The guest list included friends, such as industrialist Mukesh Ambani, the billionaire head of Reliance Industries; rivals, led by Sonia and Rahul Gandhi, leaders of the bruised Congress party; leaders of neighboring countries, including Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Afghan President Hamid Karzai. Rajnath Singh, Sushma Swaraj, Arun Jaitley, M Venkaiah Naidu, Nitin Gadkari, Uma Bharti, Maneka Gandhi, Ananth Kumar, Ravi Shankar Prasad, Smriti Irani and Harsh Vardhan were among those who were sworn in as Cabinet ministers. Ram Vilas Paswan (LJP), Harsimrat Kaur Badal (Akali Dal), Anant Geete (Shiv Sena) and Ashok Gajapathi Raju (TDP) were those from allied parties who took the oath.

Modi has kept with him, like some of his predecessors, the portfolios of personnel, public grievances and pensions as well as the departments of atomic energy and space besides any other department not allocated to any minister. BJP leader Arun Jailtey has been given three heavy portfolios of Finance Ministry, defence and corporate affairs.
