Spotting Errors in English Sentences : Exercises with Answers - Set 1

Read each sentence and find out whether there is any grammatical error in it. The error, if any, will be in one part of the sentence. The number of that part is the answer. If there is no error, the answer is '5', i.e., No error.

Note : Ignore the errors of punctuation, if any


I have been traveling by local trains (1) /since last several years (2) / but had never experienced (3) / such a horrible situation as this. (4) / No error. (5)

Honesty and integrity are (1)/ the qualities which cannot be (2)/ done away with (3)/ and hence assume a lot of importance. (4)/ No error (5).





Our system of assigning (1)/ different jobs to different people (2)/ should be based on their (3)/ strengths and weaknesses. (4)/ No error (5).





In a very harsh tone. (1)/ he shouted at his servants (2)/ and told them that (3)/ he does not need their services. (4)/ No error (5).





Reasonable ambition, if supported (1)/ at persistent efforts, (2)/ is likely to yield (3)/ the desired results. (4)/ No error (5).





Even after worked in the office (1)/ for as many as fifteen years. (2)/ he still does not understand (3)/ the basic objectives of the work. (4)/ No error (5).





Why some people don't get (1)/ what they deserve (2)/ and why others get what they don't deserve (3)/ is a matter decided by luck. (4)/ No error (5).
