International Affairs
  • India and France are working on building the third Indo-French satellite designed for climate change studies.
  • An influential former Afghanistan warlord who served as water and energy minister in a previous administration narrowly escaped an assassination attempt.
  • Syria's government handed an ultimatum to a UN mediator hoping to broker peace in the country's civil war, vowing to leave if "serious talks'' do not begin.
  • Chinese police have arrested over 800 people suspected of producing, selling and using illegal wiretapping and photography equipment to conduct surveillance.
  • Nepal's top court has ruled that there is no need to elect a new president, settling a major point of differences among the political parties.

National Affairs
  • The union government has decided to take up development of the 37km stretch of the National Waterway-4 (NW-4) between Sholinganallur and Kalpakkam in South Buckingham Canal.
  • The Election Commission of India (ECI) celebrated the 4th National Voters Day across the country on 25 January 2014.
  • India has been ranked at a low 155th position in a global list that evaluates countries on how well they perform on high-priority environmental issues.
  • National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) opened more than 2,600 village legal aid clinics across the states for the people to avail free legal services.
  • The dates for the next edition of the annual Jaipur Literature festival is set to be held from January 21 to January 25 in 2015.
Awards and Honors
  • The world famous yoga guru, B.K.S. Iyengar, and the former chief of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), R.A. Mashelkar, have been awarded the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second highest civilian honour (check the detailed list of Padma Award winners for the year 2014 from here).
  • Tennis star Leander Paes and  Pullela Gopichand were on Saturday selected for the prestigious Padma Bhushan awards while cricketer Yuvraj Singh was among the seven sportspersons chosen for this year's Padma Shri award.
  • Arogyaswami Joseph Paulraj, India-born professor at Stanford University in the US, is the winner of the Marconi Prize 2014 for his pioneering work on developing wireless technology to transmit and receive data at high speed. 
  • The President of India Pranab Mukherjee presented awards for the year 2012-13 to various States and Cities for outstanding performance in different categories under the flagship schemes of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation on 22nd January 2013.
  • Kerala Tourism has been conferred the United Nations Award for creating innovative initiatives for sustainable tourism, the first time India has ever won the recognition.

Appointments
  • Mr. Alok Sinha, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Civil Aviation, has been given additional charge of the Chairman of Airports Authority of India.
  • The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has appointed Sudhir Gupta as secretary. Prior to his new role, Gupta was serving as a principal advisor with the regulatory body.

Deaths
  • Former Jharkhand Deputy Chief Minister and JMM leader Sudhir Mahato died  following a massive heart attack at Ghatsila in East Singhbhum district of the state.
Sports
  • Top-ranked Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci rallied to win the last five games and successfully defended their Australian Open women's doubles title beating  Russian pair Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina .
  • China's Li Na won her second Grand Slam title with victory over Slovakian Dominika Cibulkova at the Australian Open.
