One of the first generation actors of Tollywood (Telugu), Akkineni Nageshwara Rao  (20th September 1924 – 22nd January 2014), better known as ANR died of cancer today.  His portrayal of an alcoholic jilted lover in Telugu movie Devadasu based on the  Bengali Writer Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay's famous novel "Devdas" erected an everlasting monument to the famous Bengali character. Although that role was reprized by many in later years in several different languages, it prompted the famous Hindi actor Dilip Kumar to say, "there is only one Devdas, and that is Akkineni Nageswara Rao".

ANR and NTR (Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao who died in the year 1996 almost 18 years ago) were considered to be the two pillars on which the Telugu film industry thrived. The 90-year-old legendary actor,  has won prestigious awards including Dada Saheb Phalke, Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibushan. He was the first to don a double role in Telugu films, and even played nine roles in the film Navarathri. His film Premabhishekam was one of the biggest hits of Tollywood film industry.

He Known to do things differently, ANR also held  a press conference to clear all the speculations surrounding his disease. He was the first actor in the world to do so. He had said he was going public about his health because he did not want anyone to speculate about his health condition. Recently, he had undergone surgery for intestinal cancer and was said to be fast recovering from it.

His last film will be "Manam", which will see the presence of three generations of his family members including his son Nagarjuna and his grandson Naga Chaitanya which is going to be released this year.
