• Opposition protesters were Monday locked in a tense standoff with Ukrainian security forces in Kiev after hours of unprecedented clashes deep into the night left dozens wounded and parts of the centre resembling a battlefield.

Business and Economy

• The Reserve Bank of India has set up an eight-member panel headed by former Axis Bank Chairman P J Nayak to review functioning of board of banks and examine 'fit and proper' criteria for directors, including their tenure.
• The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) has approved the sale of the Government’s residual stake in Hindustan Zinc, a company now owned by Vedanta group’s Sterlite.

Science and Technology

• Mars Opportunity rover has found a weird rock on the red planet that looks like a "jelly doughnut", a discovery that has left scientists baffled.     

Sports

• Roger Federer, bidding to become the first man to win five Australian Open singles titles since tennis turned professional in 1968, reached the quarterfinals yesterday with a straight-sets win over Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France.
