International Current Affairs
  • China was elected as vice chair of Financial Action Task Force (FATF), a global body mandated to combat terror financing and money laundering. 
  • The Indian Navy is going to host the multi-national MILAN exercise 2018 at Port Blair in Andaman and Nicobar (A&N) islands from March 6 to 13, 2018. 
    • The 8-day mega naval exercise will be held under aegis of Andaman and Nicobar Command with theme of ‘Friendship Across the Seas’.
    • 16 countries  including Australia, Malaysia, Mauritius, Myanmar, New Zealand, Oman, Vietnam, Thailand, Tanzania, Sri Lanka, Singapore, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Kenya and Cambodia are participating in this exercise.
    • Note : Maldives has declined India's invitation to participate in this exercise amid the state of emergency in Maldives after the government refused a Supreme Court order to release political prisoners. 
  • India has been ranked 47th out of 86 countries on the Inclusive Internet Index by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), which was commissioned by Facebook.
    • Sweden took the first place, followed by Singapore and the US
  • Meghalaya Governor Ganga Prasad has inaugurated the "Friendship Gate" near Integrated Check post, 90 km South of capital Shillong on border with Bangladesh.
    • This gate has been constructed with an aim to have a Wagah-like beating retreat ceremony for the Indian and Bangladesh border guards.
National Current Affairs
  • Nation paying tribute to martyr Chandrashekhar Azad (23rd July 1906 – 27th February 1931)  on his Death Anniversary today.
    • He was a great Indian freedom fighter who was involved in Kakori Train Robbery, the attempt to blow up the Viceroy's train, and the shooting of Saunders at Lahore to avenge the killing of Lala Lajpat Rai.
    • He was the mentor of Bhagat Singh, another great freedom fighter.
    • After the independence, to commemorate Chandra Shekhar Azad, Alfred Park (Allahabad), where Chandra Shekhar Azad shot himself was renamed Chandra Shekhar Azad Park.
  • To generate public awareness on protection of one-horned rhinoceros (pachyderm) , the Assam government will be observing September 22nd as Rhino Day.
    • The day will be dedicated to approximately 2,500 rhino population in state.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched subsidised Amma two-wheeler Scheme for working women in Tamil Nadu, on the occasion of former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa’s 70th birth anniversary.
    • Under the Amma Two Wheeler Scheme, every beneficiary will be given 50% of cost of a two-wheeler or grant of Rs. 25,000.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has refused to extend the February 28 deadline for mandatory KYC (Know Your Customer) compliance by prepaid wallet customers. 
    • However, the central bank clarified that customers won't lose their outstanding balance even if KYC is not done. 
    • Customers can undertake transactions with the available balance but will have to complete the KYC before reloading the wallet.
  • The Punjab National Bank (PNB) has announced that the amount of fraudulent transactions, involving Nirav Modi and Mehul Choksi, could be over ₹1,300 crore more than the current estimate of ₹11,400 crore.
    • The amount of over ₹12,700 crore relating to the faulty transactions, which were carried out using fraudulent Letters of Undertaking to get overseas credit, is nearly 10 times PNB's 2016-17 net profit.
  • Iran is planning to launch its own national cryptocurrency.
    • This cryptocurrency would help Iran evade the potential US sanctions. 
    • Important Note : This comes after Venezuela, also hit by US sanctions, launched its own oil-backed cryptocurrency 'Petro'.
New Appointments
  • Grand Master Vidit Gujrathi has been appointed as the brand ambassador of All India Chess Federation for the Blind (AICFB).
  • Pakistan's ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) party today appointed ousted Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's brother Shehbaz Sharif as its interim president. 
Science & Technology
  • Germany and France-based researchers have recorded 100 million distance values per second, demonstrating the fastest distance measurement so far. 
    • The team studied a bullet travelling at 540 kmph with micrometre accuracy using laser-based LIDAR (light detection and ranging). 
Books & Authors
  • Former US First Lady Michelle Obama has announced that her memoir titled 'Becoming' will be published on November 13, 2018. 
    • The book will be published in 24 languages worldwide. 
Awards & Honors
  • Veteran filmmaker Ramesh Sippy, who directed the classic blockbuster “Sholay” and tele-serial “Buniyaad”, would be conferred the 1st ‘Raj Kapoor Award for Excellence in Cinema’
    • Instituted by the Asian Centre for Entertainment Education (ACEE) with various international organisations like World Bank, UNICEF, USC Annenberg Normal Lear Cenre, Hollywood Health and Society, Cinepolis Foundation and CMS, the ‘Raj Kapoor Trophy’ will be unveiled tomorrow.
Sports Current Affairs
  • Karnataka has won the Vijay Hazare Trophy by defeating Saurashtra by 41 runs in the finals. 
  • The Davis Cup, in existence since 1900, is going to be converted into a 'World Cup of Tennis' from next year. 
    • This new format will feature 18 teams playing a week-long event at one venue, instead of the existing 16 teams playing across four different months.
