International Current Affairs
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi today addressed the Plenary Session at the World Economic Forum 2018 in Switzerland's Davos.
    • With this he became the first Indian PM to address the WEF in 20 years
  • The Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau has announced that he will be on a state visit to India from 17th to 23rd February 2018.
    • During the visit, both dignitaries will discuss creating good middle-class jobs for Canadians and Indians alike.
  • Union Minister for Information Technology Ravi Shankar Prasad was on a 3-day visit to Sri Lanka
    • During this visit, he called on Srilankan President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremsinghe and discussed issues of mutual interest. 
National Current Affairs
  • Today is 121st birth anniversary of Indian Nationalist and Freedom Fighter Subhash Chandra Bose.
    • Bose was born on this day in the year 1897, in Cuttack, which was then a part of Bengal province.
    • An advocate of complete freedom, Netaji went to jail 11 times during the independence struggle.
    • Netaji, the founder of the Indian National Army, was chosen President of the Congress twice when Mahatma Gandhi was also nominated.
  • The Odisha state government has launched Odisha e-Hospital Management Information System (OeHMIS) to provide a computerized platform for online recording of clinical parameters of patients and reporting of performance criteria of hospitals.
    • According to the OeHMIS system, patients can be registered online and can view and download their individual electronic health records at their doorstep through web portal or mobile application.
  • External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj inaugurated Puducherry's First Post Office Passport Seva Kendra (POPSK) at Karaikal.
    • It will enable locals to avail passport related services without having to travel to Puducherry.
  • The 65th Meeting of the Central Advisory Board of Education (CABE) was recently held at New Delhi. 
    • This meeting was chaired by : Prakash Javadekar  (Union Human Resource Development Minister)
MOUs & Agreements
  • The Andhra Pradesh government and the Canton of Zurich today signed a sister-state agreement to promote mutual prosperity and development. 
    • The agreement is expected to strengthen economic and scientific relations between the two governments in various fields.
    • The move will also promote collaborations between the governments through the exchange of experiences and information.
    Deaths
    • India's longest living army veteran, retired Major FKK Sircar (101), passed away.
      • Sircar had participated in three wars namely, 2nd World War, the Indo-Pak War from 1947 to 1948 and the Indo-China War of 1962. 
      • He was among the first set of officers who built National Cadet Corps (NCC) structure across the country.
    Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
    • Digital payments startup Paytm has introduced 'Paytm for Business' app for merchants and businesses to to accept payments instantly for zero charges. 
      • The app also lets businesses view their transactions without the need to wait for a confirmation SMS or an email. 
      • It is available in 10 regional languages and has currently been launched on Android operating system.
    • India's largest lender State Bank of India (SBI) has announced that it will hire over 9,500 people for customer support and sales functions. 
      • This comes after the bank's employee strength had gone down by over 10,000 during the current fiscal after its merger with associate banks. 
      • The introduction of digital banking has reportedly reduced the requirement of administrative staff.
    Awards & Honors
    • Bollywood Actor Shah Rukh Khan was felicitated at the 24th Annual Crystal Awards as part of World Economic Forum's 48th Annual Meeting for his leadership in championing children's and women's rights in India. 
    Science & Technology
    • American online social media and social networking service Facebook today announced that it has invented a new unit of time called 'flick' to measure the speed of digital audio and video. 
      • A flick, or frame-tick, is roughly 1.41723356 nanoseconds long and defined as 1/705,600,000 of a second. 
    • The Indian Railways is going to introduce self-propelled 'Made in India' luxury trains that are expected to reduce travellers' time by around 20%. 
      • Two trains, called Train 18 and Train 20, have been designed by a Chennai factory and can run at a speed of up to 160 kmph. 
      • Train 18 is expected to be manufactured by June 2018.

    • Former international football player George Weah has been sworn in as the new President of Liberia.
    • Momtaz Moussa has been appointed as the Business' General Manager of Online classifieds platform OLX India
