Hindu Editorial Topic 1 : "Cleaning up: on reviewing laws in India"
  • Reviewing - to study or examine a situation, policy, or idea again in order to decide whether it is suitable or satisfactory
  • Mechanism - a method or process for getting something done within a system or organization
  • Weed out - to remove a person or thing that is not suitable or good enough, especially from a group or collection
  • Obsolete - no longer used because of being replaced by something newer and more effective
  • Tedious - boring and continuing for too long
  • Arduous - extremely difficult and involving a lot of effort
  • Despite - used for saying that something happens even though something else might have prevented it
  • Repeal - to state officially that a law no longer has legal authority and has ended
  • Ordinance - an official order by a government, king, queen etc
  • Periodic - happening regularly though not frequently
  • Statutory - controlled by a law or statute
  • Corpus - a collection of writing
  • Archaic - old and no longer used
  • Enactment - the making of a law, or a particular act of making a law
  • In tune with something - to be similar to something and combine well with it
  • Seditious - encouraging people to oppose the government or not obey the law
  • Outrage - a strong feeling of anger and shock at something that you feel is wrong or unfair
  • Detention - the state of being kept in a police station or prison and not being allowed to leave
  • Statute - a law passed by a government and formally written down
  • Redundant - not needed
  • Sedition - language or behaviour that is intended to persuade other people to oppose their government
  • Disaffection - the state of no longer feeling loyal towards a group or organization
  • Adultery - sex that takes place between a married person and someone who is not their husband or wife
  • Notion - knowledge or understanding of something
  • Overhaul - to completely change a system in order to make it work more effectively
  • Interim - temporary and intended to be used or accepted until something permanent exists
  • Panel - a group of people who make decisions or judgments
  • Injury - physical damage done to a person or a part of their body
  • Gratuity - a large amount of money given to someone when they leave their job, for example in the armed forces
  • Offence - a crime or illegal activity for which there is a punishment
  • Invoke - to use a law or rule in order to achieve something
  • Law-abiding - a law-abiding person obeys the law
  • Prolific - producing a great number or amount of something

  • Embrace - to completely accept something such as a new belief, idea, or way of life

  • Tenure - the period of time during which someone has an important job or is an elected official
  • Affirmation - an action of support or approval
  • Stature - the amount of public respect or popularity that someone or something has
  • Emergence - the process of appearing or becoming recognized
  • Outline - to give the main ideas of a plan or a piece of writing without giving all the details
  • Assault - an attack by the armed forces
  • Sovereignty - the right to rule a country
  • Align - to give your support publicly to a group, political party, or country
  • Concern - a feeling of worry about something, especially one that a lot of people have about an important issue
  • Strategic - carefully planned in order to achieve a particular goal, especially in war, business, or politics
  • Single out - to choose one person or thing from a group for special attention, especially criticism or praise
  • Criticism - comments that show that you think something is wrong or bad
  • Pursue - to follow a course of activity
  • Zero-sum - a situation in which one person can win only what another person loses
  • Imperialism - the actions of a powerful country that tries to take control of other countries, often using military force
  • Accuse - to say that someone has done something wrong or committed a crime
  • Deny - to not allow someone to have something
  • Dismissive - reacting to something in a way that shows you do not think it is worth paying attention to
  • Mindful - careful about or conscious of something
  • Threat - a situation or an activity that could cause harm or danger
  • Unthinkingly - used about something that you do without thinking that it might be wrong or stupid
  • Clinch - to manage to win or achieve something by doing one final thing that makes it certain
  • Articulation - the expression of thoughts, ideas, or feelings in words
  • Perceive - to understand or think about something in a particular way
  • Stabilisation - the process of making something physically more secure or stable.
  • Concrete - practical
  • Show your hand - to let someone know what you intend to do or what methods you have of doing it
  • Coalition - a temporary union of different political parties that agree to form a government together
  • Cogent - reasonable and sensible
  • Autonomous - an autonomous state, region, or organization is independent and has the power to govern itself
  • Pluralistic - the idea that people can and should live together without fighting, despite differences in race, religion, culture, politics etc
