Hindu Editorial Topic 1 : "Powering up food: fortification is good but needs regulation"

  • Fortification - the process of making something stronger
  • Regulation - an official rule that controls the way that things are done
  • Augmenting - to increase the size, amount, or value of something
  • Nutrient - a substance in food that plants, animals, and people need to live and grow
  • Diversified - to start to include more different types or things
  • Diet - the food that a person or animal usually eats
  • Malnutrition - a medical condition in which you are weak or ill because you do not eat enough or do not eat enough of the right foods
  • Deficiency - a state of not having, or not having enough, of something that is needed
  • Micro - very small
  • Processed food - processed food has had some sort of chemical or industrial treatment in order to cook it, preserve it, or improve its taste or appearance
  • Maternal - relating to being a mother
  • Imperative - extremely important and urgent
  • Maternal death - the death of a woman while pregnant
  • Anaemia - a medical condition in which your blood contains too few red blood cells (=the cells that carry oxygen through the body)
  • Pre-term - born before the full period of pregnancy is completed
  • Cognitive - connected with thinking or conscious mental processes
  • Folate - a type of B vitamin essential for cell growth and reproduction
  • Deprived - not having the things that are essential for a comfortable life
  • Adequate - good enough or large enough for a particular purpose
  • Intake - the amount of something that you eat or drink
  • Absorption -  the process by which something takes in a substance, form of energy, or liquid
  • Efficacy - the ability, especially of a medicine or a method of achieving something, to produce the intended result
  • Enforcement - the process of making sure that something happens
  • Norm - an average standard or level
  • Precisely - exactly / clearly
  • Infectious - (of a disease) able to be passed one person, animal, or plant to another
  • Address - to give attention to or deal with a matter or problem
  • Prevention - the act of stopping something from happening or of stopping someone from doing something
  • Elimination - the process of getting rid of something that is not wanted or needed
  • Wholesome - wholesome food is food that is good for you
  • Remedial - intended to improve or correct something
  • Vital - very important, necessary, or essential

  • Detour - a way of going from one place to another that is not the shortest or usual way
  • Bilateral - involving two groups or countries
  • Diplomatic - acting in a way that does not cause offence
  • Nicety - a way of behaving that people consider to be correct
  • Optic - the way a situation looks to the general public
  • Distinctly - in a clear or noticeable way
  • Undiplomatic - very direct, in a way that is likely to cause offence
  • Discordant - in which there are a lot of disagreements
  • Multilateral - involving three or more groups, especially the governments of three or more countries
  • Negotiations - ormal discussions in which people or groups try to reach an agreement, especially in a business or political situation
  • Intermediary - someone who talks to each of the people or groups involved in something, usually passing information from one to the other or trying to persuade them to agree with each other
  • Consistent -  not changing in behaviour, attitudes, or qualities
  • Dispute - a serious disagreement, especially one between groups of people that lasts for a long time
  • On the heels of something - close behind or soon after something
  • Provocative - intended to start arguments between people or to make people angry or upset
  • Gesture - a movement that communicates a feeling or instruction
  • Coincidence - a situation in which separate things happen by chance at the same time or in the same way
  • Rapport - a relationship in which people like, understand, and respect each other
  • Bonhomie - a friendly happy feeling
  • Revive - to make something become, active, successful, or popular again
  • Declining - becoming less or worse
  • Caveat - a warning of the limits of a particular agreement or statement
  • Significantly -  in a way that is relevant or that has an important effect on something
  • Condemning - to say publicly that you think someone or something is bad or wrong
  • Emanating - to come from a particular place
  • Date back - to have existed for a particular length of time or since a particular time
  • Synergy - the extra energy or effectiveness that people or businesses create when they combine their efforts
  • Bolster - to make something stronger or more effective
  • Persist - to try to do or continue doing something in a determined but often unreasonable way
  • Diplomacy - the ability to deal with people in a sensitive way that does not upset or offend them
