Hindu Editorial Topic 1 : " Lines of defence for using EVMs"

  • Line of defence - any organization whose responsibility it is to defend against something
  • Audit - a careful examination of something, especially one done to find the amount, size, or effectiveness of something
  • Perhaps - used to show that something is possible or that you are not certain about something
  • Unavoidable - impossible to stop from happening
  • In the face of something - in a situation where you have to deal with something unpleasant or difficult
  • Extreme - very unusual
  • Unreasonable - not fair or acceptable
  • Corroborate - to support what someone says by giving information or evidence that agrees with them
  • Constituency - a division of a country that elects a representative to a parliament
  • Expensive - something that is expensive costs a lot of money
  • Procurement - the process of obtaining something
  • Interpret - to understand an action, situation etc in a particular way
  • Context - the general situation in which something happens, which helps to explain it
  • Brush off - to refuse to listen to someone, or to accept that something might be true or important
  • Respectively - used for saying that something happens separately to each of the people or things mentioned in the order in which they were mentioned
  • Clutch - to take or try to take hold of something
  • Chorus - a group of people expressing the same opinion
  • Ballot - the process of voting secretly to choose a candidate in an election or express an opinion about an issue
  • Assure - to tell someone that something will definitely happen or is definitely true, especially in order to remove doubt about it
  • Safeguard - to protect something or someone from being harmed or having problems
  • Large-scale - involving many people or things
  • Tampering - the illegal act of making changes to something when you should not
  • Manipulation - the process of skilfully handling, controlling, or using something
  • Dynamic - continuously changing, growing, or developing
  • Encrypted - to put information into code (a system of words, numbers, or symbols that hides its real meaning)
  • Programmable - a machine that is programmable can be given instructions so that it will do something automatically
  • Stand-alone - to not depend on other people or things, or to not be influenced by them
  • Laid down - to officially establish a rule, or to officially say how something should be done
  • Accountability - a situation in which people know who is responsible for something and can ask them to explain its state or quality
  • Indigenously - locally
  • Contrary - opposite
  • Drastic - severe and sudden or having very noticeable effects:
  • Rigging -  the act of organizing something in a dishonest way in order to produce a particular result
  • Reverting to something - to return to a previous state or way of behaving, often one that is not good
  • Regressive -  returning to a old or less developed state
  • Protest - a strong complaint or disagreement
  • Quietus -  an end to something, usually something unpleasant
