Hindu Editorial Topic 1 : "The price of defiance"

  • Defiance - behaviour in which you refuse to obey someone or something
  • Predicament - a difficult or unpleasant situation that is not easy to get out of
  • Defying - to refuse to obey someone or something
  • Reforms - changes that are intended to make a system work more effectively
  • Contempt - a strong feeling of disliking and having no respect for someone or something
  • Prosecution - the process or act of accusing someone of a crime and asking a court of law to judge them

  • Perjury - the crime of telling lies in court when you have promised to tell the truth
  • Transparency - an honest way of doing things that allows other people to know exactly what you are doing
  • Accountability - a situation in which people know who is responsible for something and can ask them to explain its state or quality
  • Compliance - the practice of obeying a law, rule, or request
  • Obstructionist - the act of intentionally stopping or slowing down an official process
  • Tactic - a planned way of doing something
  • Inevitable - impossible to avoid or prevent
  • Wilful - done deliberately in order to cause damage or harm
  • Defy - to refuse to obey a person, decision, law, situation, etc
  • Affiliated - used to describe an organization that is officially connected with or controlled by another, usually larger, organization
  • Held sway - have great power or influence over a particular person, place, or organization
  • Autonomy - the right of an organization, country, or region to be independent and govern itself
  • Imminent - coming or likely to happen very soon
  • Equivocation - to speak in a way that is intentionally not clear and confusing to other people, especially to hide the truth
  • Interference - the process of deliberately becoming involved in a situation and trying to influence the way that it develops, although you have no right to do this
  • Stance - an attitude or view about an issue that you state clearly
  • Mollify - to make someone less angry or upset
  • Wrath - extreme anger

  • Gathered - when people or animals gather, they come together in a group
  • Booming - increasing
  • Descended - to become lower
  • Instability - a situation that keeps changing, so that you are worried about what might happen
  • Chaos - a situation in which everything is confused and in a mess
  • Blowback - negative reactions or results that were not intended, such as criticism, protest, or anger
  • Turned out - to happen in a particular way or to have a particular result, especially an unexpected one
  • Monumental - very big
  • Ally - a country that has agreed officially to give help and support to another one, especially during a war
  • Anti-regime - opposed to or against government
  • Inadvertently - not intentional
  • Folly - a way of thinking or behaving that is stupid and careless, and likely to have bad results
  • Debacle - a complete failure, especially because of bad planning and organization
  • Autonomous - an autonomous state, region, or organization is independent and has the power to govern itself

  • Ceasefire - an agreement, usually between two armies, to stop fighting in order to allow discussions about peace
  • Kicking off - starting
  • Civil war - a war fought by different groups of people living in the same country
  • In a tight spot - to be in a difficult situation
  • Threat - a situation or an activity that could cause harm or danger
  • Curtail - to stop something before it is finished, or to reduce or limit something
  • Minority - a small number of people or things that are part of a larger group but different in some way from most of the group
  • Authoritarian - demanding that people obey completely and refusing to allow them freedom to act as they wish
  • Tendency - an aspect of your character that you show by behaving in a particular way
  • Crackdown -  a situation in which someone starts to deal with bad or illegal behaviour in a more severe way
  • Dissent - a strong difference of opinion on a particular subject, especially about an official suggestion or plan or a popular belief
  • Polarising - to cause something, especially something that contains different people or opinions, to divide into two completely opposing groups
  • Fragility - easily damaged, broken, or harmed
