Topic 1 : "Judicial overreaction"

  • Contempt - lack of respect (the feeling that a person or a thing is worthless)
  • Adverse - harmful
  • Behoves - it is ​right for someone to do something
  • Zeal - enthusiasm for something
  • Detractors - a person who puts you down
  • Unduly - excessively
  • Malice - the intention to harm someone
  • Long arm - power
  • Scandalise -  to shock by improper behaviour
  • Lenient - not overly strict (showing mercy when someone does something wrong)
  • Shrug - to ​raise ​your ​shoulders and then ​lower them in ​order to say you do not ​know or are not ​interested
  • Vicious - deliberately cruel or violent
  • Tendentious - promoting a specific, and controversial, point of view
  • Disrepute - a state of having a bad reputation
  • Ridicule - making fun of somebody (to ​laugh at someone in an ​unkind way)
  • Discern - having or showing good judgement
  • Inconceivable - unbelievable
  • Prima facie - at first sight (based on what ​seems to be the ​truth when first ​seen or ​heard)
  • Stifling - forceful prevention (putting down by power or authority)
  • Dissent - to publicly disagree with an official opinion or decision
  • Subverting - to ​try to ​destroy or ​damage something (especially an ​established ​political ​system)

Topic 2 : "Cess proceeds in a black hole"


  • Cess - tax
  • Hinterland - the land of a country away from the coast or the banks of major rivers
  • Proceeds - money obtained from an event or activity
  • Levy - impose / collect tax
  • Evident - clearly seen or understood
  • Inadequate - not enough (too small in amount)
  • Yielded - produced
  • Fork out - to ​pay an ​amount of ​money (​especially ​unwillingly)
  • Precludes - prevents from happening
  • Spruce up - to make (somethingthing) smart and neat
  • Defunct - no longer existing or functioning
  • Designated - specific
  • Stagnate - stop moving forward (not ​grow or ​develop)
  • Distorts -  to ​change something from ​its natural form
  • Shore up - to support something
  • Disclose - to reveal
  • Deployment - the use of something in an ​effective way
