• Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today expressed confidence that India will soon conclude a civil nuclear deal with Japan that will allow Tokyo to export nuclear reactors to the country.
• A cross-border business plan competition "Startup Dosti" is to be launched by an American think tank that will connect entrepreneurs from India and Pakistan, facilitating investment and collaboration. The new cross-border business plan competition, named "Startup Dosti", will be formally launched at an event on June 3 at the British Parliament.
• Sri Lanka and Thailand Friday called for enhanced defence and maritime security cooperation to tackle terrorism, President Mahinda Rajapakse's office said.
• Marking an end to over two decades of tiring negotiations, India and Thailand finally inked an extradition treaty that will pave the way for extradition of those involved in terror and other crimes in both countries.
• World No Tobacco Day (WNTD) is being observed today around the world to draw attention to health problems that tobacco use can cause.

• Wali-ur-Rehman a senior Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) commander was killed in the militant stronghold of North Waziristan, on northwest Pakistan's border with Afghanistan, Pakistani security officials and militants said.

• Japan and Russia sign deal to jointly explore and develop potentially lucrative oil and gas field off Russia's Far East coast.
• Chinese hackers allegedly stole classified blueprints of the new headquarters of Australia's top spy agency.
• Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at Indo-Japan business council. He arrived Tokyo on a three-day visit to Japan to invigorate bilateral strategic ties and push for a civil nuclear energy cooperation deal.

• US President Obama visited Moore, Okla., on Sunday, about a week after the town was destroyed by a monstrous EF5 tornado that left 24 people dead.
• An Airbus A319 carrying Czech Prime Minister Petr Necas landed safely in Moscow after pilots found a crack in the cockpit outer window while in the air, the Czech News Agency reported.
• Protocol 15 to the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms (ECHR) has been adopted.
• Syria’s foreign minister has said that his government will take part in a peace conference in Geneva, terming it a “good opportunity for a political solution” to the civil war in Syria.
• Though it is still too early to tell who fired them, two rockets have hit the southern suburbs of Beirut. Additionally, a rocket was fired from south Lebanon towards Israel according to Lebanese security sources; this incident is also being investigated.
