National Current Affairs
  • The 5th Edition of South Asia Region Public Procurement Conference was held in New Delhi.
    • This conference was hosted by Public Procurement Division (PPD) of Ministry of Finance and All India Management Association (AIMA).
    • Theme of this Conference : “Public Procurement and Service Delivery”.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • In it's 6th Bi-Monthly Policy Review released today, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has kept the Repo rate, the rate at which banks borrow from RBI, steady at 6% for the third time in a row.
    • This comes after retail inflation in December rose to a 17-month high of 5.21%. 
    • The RBI last cut the rate by 25 basis points in August last year.

  • The flag carrier airline of India, Air India is going to get a one-time grant of €750,000 (approximately ₹6 crore) from Israel for launching direct flights between New Delhi and Tel Aviv.
    • The flight is expected to operate on the shortest route and significantly reduce the cost of travel between the two countries.
New Appointments
  • Lt. Gen Anil Chauhan, who has vast experience in counter-insurgency operations, took charge as the new Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) of the Indian Army.
    • He has replaced Lt General A K Bhatt who will assume charge of the Srinagar-based 15 Corps.
  • Retired bureaucrat Naba Kumar Nayak has been appointed as the State Election Commissioner (SEC) in Odisha ahead of this year's urban local body (ULB) elections.
  • Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades beat his leftist rival to clinch a second term in a runoff election today.
  • Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari today announced that the Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar is going to be the Brand Ambassador for the government's Road Safety Awareness Campaign
  • IFS Officer Thanglura Darlong has been appointed as the next Ambassador of India to Romania.
Science & Technology
  • Elon Musk-led SpaceX has successfully launched the world's most powerful operational rocket Falcon Heavy towards Mars. 
    • The rocket, carrying a Tesla Roadster car, will revolve around the Sun in a way that will repeatedly bring it close to the Earth and Mars.
  • Indian Railways' all new 12,000 horsepower Electric Locomotive, which is being produced in collaboration with Alstom of France and which can run at speeds of up to 120 kmph, would be rolled out in March when French President Emmanuel Macron visits India.
  • Spain's Francisco Nunez Olivera (113), the world’s oldest man, has passed away.
    • Olivera was born on December 13, 1904, months after Spanish painter Salvador DalĂ­.
    • Note : Yisrael Kristal, a Holocaust survivor and the world’s former oldest man, died in August 2017, making Olivera the world’s oldest man for the last five months of his life.
  • Former Minister and presently member of Andhra Pradesh Legislative Council Gali Muddukrishnama Naidu (70) passed away.
Awards & Honors
  • Veteran filmmaker Shyam Benegal has been selected for the prestigious 'V. Shantaram Lifetime Achievement Award' of the Mumbai International Film Festival (MIFF-2018).
    • The award, carrying a trophy, a citation, shawl and cash prize of Rs 10 lakh, will be conferred on Benegal by Maharashtra Governor CV Rao at the MIFF 2018 valedictory function on Saturday.
Sports Current Affairs
  • Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) were crowned as champions of the 8th Hockey India Senior Women National Championship 2018 (B Division) after they defeated Kerala Hockey by a margin of 7-0 in the final match held at Ranchi (Jharkhand).
