Hindu Editorial Topic 1 : "Darjeeling deadlock: On elusive peace"
  • Deadlock - a situation in which neither person or group involved in a disagreement is willing to change their opinions or position
  • Elusive - difficult or impossible to achieve
  • Sink your differences - to stop arguing and come to an agreement
  • Tripartite - involving three countries or organizations
  • Shutdown - an occasion when a machine or factory stops working temporarily
  • Determine - to officially decide something
  • Evident - easy to see, notice, or understand
  • Deployment - if a government or army deploys soldiers or weapons, it uses them
  • Troops - soldiers, especially in large numbers
  • Fluid - if situations, ideas, or plans are fluid, they are not fixed and are likely to change, often repeatedly and unexpectedly
  • Protester - someone who publicly shows their opposition to something such as a law or policy
  • Misappropriation - to steal something that you have been trusted to take care of and use it for your own good
  • Proclaim - to announce something publicly or officially
  • Offender - someone who has committed a crime
  • Exploit - to use a situation so that you get benefit from it, even if it is wrong or unfair to do this
  • Prop up - to help a government, system, organization etc to continue to exist, especially by providing financial or military support
  • Autonomous - an autonomous state, region, or organization is independent and has the power to govern itself
  • Elevation - the act of giving someone higher status or a more important position
  • Rebel - someone who tries to remove a government or leader using force
  • Faction - a small group within a larger group, consisting of people with different opinions from the rest
  • Uncertainty - the fact that something is not known or has not been decided
  • Prevailing - existing at a particular time or in a particular place
  • Anxiety - a worried feeling you have because you think something bad might happen
  • Harvest - to collect a crop from the fields
  • Trickle back - to arrive or move somewhere slowly and gradually, in small numbers
  • Crisis - an urgent, difficult, or dangerous situation
  • Revive - to become, or to make something become, active, successful, or popular again
  • Retract -  to say that something that you previously said or wrote is not true
  • Conciliatory - trying to end an argument and make people feel less angry

  • Overhaul - to completely change a system in order to make it work more effectively

  • Boycott - to not take part in an event, or to not buy or use something as a protest
  • Prompt - to cause something to happen or be done
  • Postponement - to decide that something will not be done at the time when it was planned for, but at a later time
  • Prevailing - existing at a particular time or in a particular place
  • Scenario - a situation that could possibly happen
  • Turmoil - a state of excitement or uncontrolled activity
  • Fragile - easy to break or damage
  • Colonial - relating to a system or period in which one country rules another
  • Ethnic - relating to a group of people who have the same culture and traditions
  • Embrace - to completely accept something such as a new belief, idea, or way of life
  • Diversity - the fact that very different people or things exist within a group or place
  • Exemplary - excellent or done in a way that other people should try to copy
  • Assertion - a definite statement or claim that something is true
  • Overturn - to say officially that something such as a decision or law is wrong and change it
  • Indictment - something that shows how bad or wrong something is
  • Consistent - continuing or developing steadily in the same way
  • Lend credence - to make people think that something is likely to be true
  • Manipulation - behaviour that influences someone or controls something in a clever or dishonest way
  • Apparently - used for saying what seems to be true when people do not yet know all the facts of a situation
  • Impact - an effect, or an influence
  • Enact -  to make a proposal into a law
  • Circumscribe - to limit something such as power, rights, or opportunities
  • Robust - strong and successful
  • Transparency - the quality of being done in an open way without secrets
  • Accountable - in a position where people have the right to criticize you or ask you why something happened
  • Err - to make a wrong judgment or decision
  • Diplomat - an official whose job is to represent their government in a foreign country
  • Unambiguous - expressed in a way that makes it completely clear what is meant
  • Volatile - a volatile situation can suddenly change or become more dangerous
