Hindu Editorial Topic 1 : "Marred by violence"
  • Marred - spoiled
  • Scupper - to cause something such as a plan or an opportunity to fail
  • Inexcusable - too bad to be accepted
  • Grace - the quality of being pleasantly polite, or a willingness to be fair and honest
  • Poise - a controlled and relaxed way of behaving, even in difficult situations
  • Imminent - coming or likely to happen very soon
  • Virtue -  a good moral quality in a person, or the general quality of being morally good

  • Confidence vote - a voting process in which people show support for a person or group in power

  • Tore up - to destroy something such as a piece of paper or cloth by pulling it into pieces
  • Adjourning - to temporarily end something such as a meeting
  • Eviction - to force someone to leave a place
  • Ally - someone who helps and supports someone else
  • Protest - a strong complaint expressing disagreement, disapproval, or opposition
  • Faction - a group within a larger group, especially one with slightly different ideas from the main group
  • Admittedly - used when you are agreeing that something is true, especially unwillingly
  • Constitute - to be or be considered as something
  • Legitimacy - the fact that something is legal
  • Sorely - extremely; very much
  • Juncture - a particular point in time
  • Disqualification - a situation in which someone is not allowed to take part in something because they have committed an offence or have done something that is not allowed by the rules
  • Defection - the act of leaving a country, political party, etc. to go to another one
  • Sworn in - when someone is sworn in, they make a formal promise to be honest or loyal, when starting a new official job
  • Convening - to bring together a group of people for a meeting
  • Irregularity - a situation in which the rules, laws, or usual ways of doing things have not been followed
  • Aggrieved - unhappy and angry because of unfair treatment
  • Confined - to limit an activity, person, or problem in some way
  • Resort - a place where many people go for rest
  • Statutory - a law that has been formally approved and written down
  • Irrational - done or happening without clear or sensible reasons
  • Condoning -  accepting or allowing behaviour that is wrong
  • Legitimacy - the fact that something is legal
  • Institutionally - within or outside of an organization or institution
  • Acertained - to find out something

  • Wetland - low land that is often covered with water from the lake, river, or sea next to it
  • Massive - very large in size, amount, or number
  • A plume of smoke - a tall, thin mass of smoke
  • Urban - of or in a city or town

  • Chronic - very bad
  • Baseline - an imaginary line used as a starting point for making comparisons
  • Successive - happening one after the other without any break
  • Rampant - getting worse quickly and in an uncontrolled way

  • Catchment area - the area of land around a river or lake that it gets its water from
  • Exploitation - the use of something in order to get an advantage from it
  • Sewage - waste matter such as water or human urine or solid waste
  • Effluents - liquid waste that is sent out from factories or places where sewage is dealt with, usually flowing into rivers, lakes, or the sea
  • Blaze - a large fire that causes a lot of damage
  • Deliberate - intentional or planned
  • Ecologist - a person who studies the natural relationships between the air, land, water, animals, plants, etc
  • Inaction - failure to do anything that might provide a solution to a problem
  • Unliveable - not pleasant enough to live in
  • Outfall - the place where water or liquid waste flows out of a pipe
  • Revive - to come or bring something back to life, health, existence, or use
  • Demarcating - to show the limits of something
  • Land-grabbers - people who take land by force
  • Flooding - a situation in which an area is covered with water, especially from rain
  • Catastrophe - a sudden event that causes very great trouble or destruction (a bad situation)
  • Ornithology - the study of birds
  • Conservation - the protection of plants and animals, natural areas, and interesting and important structures and buildings, especially from the damaging effects of human activity
  • Tragic - very sad, often involving death and suffering
  • Survived - to continue to live or exist
  • Obviously - in a way that is easy to understand or see
  • Moreover - (used to add information) also and more importantly
  • Accumulation - the process by which something increases in amount or is collected together over time

  • Pose - to cause a problem or difficulty
  • Severely - very seriously
  • Perilous - extremely dangerous
