International Current Affairs

• Today (7th October) is World Day for Decent Work .
• During this day trade unions, union federations and other workers associations develop their actions to promote the idea of Decent Work.  
• This year marks the 12th World Day for Decent Work (WDDW)
  
• Theme of World Day for Decent Work 2019  :  “Investing in care for gender equality”
• Defence Minister Rajnath Singh left New Delhi this afternoon on a 2-day visit to France. 
• He will meet French President Emmanuel Macron tomorrow. 
• Later, he will participate in the handing over ceremony of Rafale fighter aircraft.
• Minister of Petroleum & Natural Gas Dharmendra Pradhan will pay a 3-day visit to Mongolia beginning today. 
• During this visit, he will  participate in the opening ceremony of  infrastructure that Mongolia has already constructed for the Indian funded, Mongol Refinery  project.
• Note : The Mongol Refinery project is being  developed under a line of credit of 1.236 billion US dollars extended by India during the Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Mongolia in 2015 and subsequently enhanced during the State visit of the President of Mongolia to India last month.
• The World Trade Organisation (WTO) will host the 1st World Cotton Day (WCD) celebrations in Geneva today. 
• This event stems from the application by the Cotton-4 countries (Benin, Burkina Faso, Chad and Mali) to the United Nations General Assembly for its official recognition of a World Cotton Day, reflecting the importance of cotton as a global commodity.
• Union Textiles Minister Smriti Irani is representing India in the 5-day event.
• Important Note : World Cotton Day (7th October) celebrates the many advantages of cotton, from its qualities as a natural fibre, to the benefits people obtain from its production, transformation, trade and consumption.
• Mauritius Prime Minister Pravind Kumar Jugnauth has dissolved parliament and called for general elections next month. 
• Jugnauth, who is also finance minister will seek another term as leader of the Mouvement Socialiste Militant (MSM). 

National Current Affairs

• In Jammu and Kashmir, Crossed Swords Division organized a “VEER KUTUMB RALLY” at Tanda, Akhnoor with an aim to reach out to veterans, veer naris, widows and their families. 
• The Rally was organised by the Indian Army as part of its activities to observe 2019 as the 'Year of the Next of Kin'.  

Banking, Business & Economic Affairs

• India has received the 1st tranche of details about financial accounts of its residents in Swiss banks under a new automatic exchange of information framework between the two countries.
• It marks a significant milestone in the fight against black money suspected to be stashed abroad.
• Note : This is the first time that India has received details from Switzerland under the AEOI (Automatic Exchange of Information) framework, which provides for exchange of information on financial accounts that currently active as well as those accounts that were closed during 2018.
• The next exchange would take place in September 2020.
• To celebrate the 55th Anniversary of India's flagship capacity building programme - Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation, the Development Partnership Administration Division of the External Affairs Ministry is organizing a conference in New Delhi today. 
• External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar will preside over the event and Minister of State for Defence and Minister of State for External Affairs will be Guests of Honour.

Deaths

• Actor-comedian Rip Taylor (84) passed away.
• He is known for making appearances on shows like, 'The Gong Show' and 'Password', among others. 
• He also made an appearance in the series 'The Monkees'.
• Ginger Baker (80), the drummer and co-founder of rock band Cream, passed away.
• Baker was ranked number 3 in Rolling Stone magazine's 100 Greatest Drummers of All Time list.

Awards & Honors

• William G. Kaelin Jr, Sir Peter J. Ratcliffe and Gregg L. Semenza have been jointly awarded the 2019 Nobel Prize for Physiology.
• They were honored with this prestegious award  for discovery of how cells sense and adapt to oxygen.
• Medicine is the first of the Nobel Prizes awarded each year. 
• It will be followed by physics prize on Tuesday, and chemistry on Wednesday.
• The 50th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) will honour and showcase Dadasaheb Phalke Award winner Amitabh Bachchan's selected films at the festival.
• The festival will be held from 20th-28th November in Goa and will screen over 200 films from 76 countries. 'Gully Boy' will also be screened at the festival.
• Bollywood Actress Bhumi Pednekar bagged her 1st International award when she won the Face of Asia award at the Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) in South Korea.
• The name of Squadron Leader Ravi Khanna, who was killed by JKLF terrorists in 1990, has been added to the National War Memorial after it was approved by the Indian Air Force (IAF). 
• Squadron Leader Khanna and three other IAF personnel were killed in January 1990 in Kashmir allegedly by JKLF founder Yasin Malik. 
• Twenty-seven bullets were pumped into Khanna's body. The trial against Malik had resumed last month in Jammu.
• About National War Memorial : 
• The National War Memorial at the India Gate is dedicated to the defence personnel who laid down their lives for the country. 
• The three armed services approve the names of the soldiers after which they are included in the National War Memorial.

New Appointments

• In Assam, Justice Ajai Lamba has taken oath today as the Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court.  
• State Governor Professor Jagdish Mukhi has administered the oath taking ceremony at the Raj Bhawan in Guwahati.

Sports Current Affairs

• Surender Singh of India created 3 world records at the ongoing World Powerlifting Championships in Berlin, Germany.
• Surender bagged Gold medal in 110 kg category, Classic Raw and the Best Lifter Award in Classic Raw and Single Ply.

Meet the winners of Nobel Prize for Medicine / Physiology 2019

The Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet has today decided to award the 2019 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine jointly to William G. Kaelin Jr, Sir Peter J. Ratcliffe and Gregg L. Semenza “for their discoveries of how cells sense and adapt to oxygen availability.”

Animals need oxygen for the conversion of food into useful energy. The fundamental importance of oxygen has been understood for centuries, but how cells adapt to changes in levels of oxygen has long been unknown.

William G. Kaelin Jr, Sir Peter J. Ratcliffe and Gregg L. Semenza discovered how cells can sense and adapt to changing oxygen availability. They identified molecular machinery that regulates the activity of genes in response to varying levels of oxygen.

The seminal discoveries by this year’s Nobel Laureates revealed the mechanism for one of life’s most essential adaptive processes. They established the basis for our understanding of how oxygen levels affect cellular metabolism and physiological function. Their discoveries have also paved the way for promising new strategies to fight anaemia, cancer and many other diseases.

Medicine is the first of the Nobel Prizes awarded each year. It will be followed by physics prize on Tuesday, and chemistry on Wednesday.

International Current Affairs

• Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will leave for France tomorrow on a 2-day visit.
• During this visit, he will meet French President Emmanuel Macron. 
• Later, he will participate in the Rafale fighter aircraft handing over ceremony at Merignac along with French Minister of Armed Forces, Florence Parly.
• He will also perform the Shastra Puja on the auspicious occasion of Vijayadashami and fly a sortie in the Rafale fighter aircraft.
• The Minister is also scheduled to hold the Annual Defence Dialogue with the French Minister of Armed Forces.
• In Nepal, the festival of Fulpati is being celebrated with gaiety and religious fervour today. 
• Note : Nepali, "Ful" means flower and "Pati" means leaves and plants. 
• Fulpati is observed on the 7th day of Dashain festival. In
• Hong Kong has used a colonial-era emergency law to ban face masks after months of angry protests. 
• Protesters have often worn face masks to hide their identity. 
  
• The measure was announced today, after the city saw widespread violence on 1 October, the 70th anniversary of Communist Party rule in China.

National Current Affairs

• Union Minister Harsh Vardhan today announced that 'Green Crackers', on which the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) had been working, will be available this year. 
• Important Note : Particulate Matter (PM) emission in green crackers is 30% lesser than ordinary crackers.
• Goa is going to host the 50th International Film Festival of India (IFFI 2019) from 20th to 28th November 2019.
• Over 200 best films from 76 countries, 26 feature films and 15 non-feature films in the Indian Panorama section will be screened at the film festival.

Banking, Business & Economic Affairs

• The finance ministry will kick-start the exercise to prepare annual Budget for 2020-21 from October 14.
• According to a Budget Circular of the Budget Division of the Finance Ministry's Department of Economic Affairs, the pre-Budget or Revised Estimate meetings will begin on 14th of this month.
• The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has decided to make it mandatory for large non-bank Prepaid Payment Instrument (PPI) issuers to institute an internal ombudsman, to improve their redressal process for consumer complaints. 
• The directive will cover issuers with more than 1 crore in PPIs outstanding. 
• Digital wallet startups and operators like PhonePe, Amazon Pay and Mobikwik will reportedly fall under the mandate's scope.
• The Economic Offences Wing of Mumbai Police has arrested former chairman of Punjab and Maharashtra Cooperative (PMC) Bank Waryam Singh, in connection with the alleged 4,355 crore rupees scam at the bank.
• Former managing director of the bank, Joy Thomas, has been remanded to police custody till 17th of October.
• Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will inaugurate the National e-Assessment Centre (NeAC) in New Delhi tomorrow. 
• The setting up of NeAC of the Income Tax Department is a momentous step towards larger objectives of better taxpayer service, reduction of grievances in line with the Prime Minister’s vision of Digital India and promotion of ease of doing business.

Deaths

• Actress-singer Diahann Carroll (84), who is known for her role in 1960s show 'Julia', passed away due to cancer. 
• Carroll earned a nomination for the 1975 Oscars in the Best Actress in a Leading Role category for 1974 film 'Claudine'. 
• She was also the first black woman to win a Tony Award in 1962.

Awards & Honors

• Actress Tannishtha Chatterjee was awarded the Asia Star Award for her directorial debut 'Roam Rome Mein' at the Busan International Film Festival. "Couldn't have asked for anything better," Tannishtha said in a statement. The film, which also features Nawazuddin Siddiqui in the lead role, was screened under 'A Window on Asian Cinema' section of the festival.

New Appointments

• Justice Lingappa Narayana Swamy was sworn in as the Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court today.
• He was administered the oath of office by Governor Bandaru Dattatraya in a simple but impressive ceremony held at Raj Bhawan in Shimla.

Sports Current Affairs

• World number one Novak Djokovic clinched the Japan Open tennis 2019 title today by defeating Australian qualifier John Millman in straight sets.

• Theme of the year 2019 : “Young Teachers: The future of the Profession.”
  
• Note : National Teachers Day in India is observed on 5th September.
• 4th October was World Animal Day.
• This is an international day of action for animal rights and welfare celebrated annually on 4th October, the feast day of Franis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals.
• Iran has passed a law allowing Iranian women to pass their citizenship to their children. 
• Under the new law, children born to an Iranian mother and foreign father will get access to social and healthcare services that were previously denied to them on the basis that they were foreigners.

RBI Cuts Repo Rate by 25 bps, Reverse Repo Rate at 4.90% - Monetary Policy Review 2019 highlights

In it's 4th bimonthly policy review, the 6 member Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) of the Reserve Bank of India  (RBI) headed by RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das, today cut the Repo Rate by 25 basis points to 5.15 per cent.  This is the 5th straight rate cut from the RBI. The Reverse repo rate stood at 4.90 per cent. Here are the major highlights of RBI's 4th bimonthly policy review 2019.

RBI Monetary Policy Review Highlights 2019

• RBI's monetary policy committee decided to cut repo rates by 25 basis points to 5.15 percent.
• The reverse repo rate under the LAF stands reduced to 4.90 per cent
• The marginal standing facility (MSF) rate and the Bank Rate to 5.40 per cent.
• The MPC also decided to continue with an accommodative stance as long as it is necessary to revive growth, while ensuring that inflation remains within the target.
  
  
• Indian shares rose today ahead of a likely interest rate cut by the RBI in the backdrop of slowing economic growth, with beaten-down banking stocks leading gains.
• The minutes of the MPC’s meeting will be published by October 18, 2019.
• In the August policy, all members of the MPC (Monetary Policy Committee) unanimously voted to reduce the policy repo rate and to maintain the accommodative stance of the monetary policy.
• RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das had justified the RBI`s unconventional move saying, "the economy needed a larger push" and a reduction in the policy repo rate by the conventional 25bps would be inadequate.
• The next meeting of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) is scheduled during December 3-5, 2019.

• Today (2nd October) is International Day of Non-Violence, the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi.
• In January 2004, Iranian Nobel laureate Shirin Ebadi had taken a proposal for an International Day of Non-Violence.
• On 15 June 2007 the United Nations General Assembly voted to establish 2nd October as the International Day of Non-Violence.
• Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina will be visiting India during 3rd to 6th October 2019.
• During the visit, she will call upon the President Ram Nath Kovind and hold bilateral discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 5.
• The two Prime Ministers will jointly inaugurate three bilateral projects via video link. 
• She will also participate as Chief Guest at the India Economic Summit organized by the World Economic Forum during 3rd & 4th October 2019. 
  
• A number of agreements are also likely to be signed during the visit. 
• Note : This will be her 1st visit to India since she came to power in Bangladesh and Prime Minister Narendra Modi was elected for the second time.
• To mark the 150 birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, Palestine has released a commemorative postage stamp honouring his legacy and values.
• National Security Adviser Ajit Doval is on a visit to Saudi Arabia.
• During this visit, he met Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and discussed bilateral and regional issues, including Jammu and Kashmir.

National Current Affairs

• The Nation pays homage to the Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi on his 150th Birth anniversary today.
• Nation pays homage to former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri on his 115th Birth anniversary today.
• Shastri served as prime minister from June 9, 1964, until his sudden death in Tashkent, Uzbekistan on January 11, 1966.
• He successfully led the nation during the 22-day war with Pakistan in 1965. 
• He gave the slogan of 'Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan', which led to a rare display of unity in the country during India-Pakistan war.

• North Korea and the United States will resume talks aimed towards the denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula on October 5. 

• Note : US-North Korea nuclear talks have been stalled since the 2nd summit between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in Vietnam ended without a deal.

National Current Affairs

• 1st October was observed as National Voluntary Blood Donation Day.
• The objective of this day is to share the need and importance of the blood in the life of an individual.
• This day was first observed in the year 1975 by the Indian Society of Blood Transfusion and Immunohaematology.
• The 94th Raising Day of the Military Nursing Service (MNS) is being celebrated on 1 October 2019. 
• India's largest 'charkha' (spinning wheel) made of plastic waste was inaugurated in Noida on the eve of Mahatma Gandhi's 150th birth anniversary. 
• The 1,650-kilogram spinning wheel was inaugurated by Union Minister Smriti Irani.
• It was made out of 1,250-kilogram plastic waste.
• The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced that the country recorded the highest rainfall this monsoon since 1994, and classified it as 'above normal' as the season officially ended on Monday. 
• To commemorate the 150th birth anniversary of the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, the UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) and Doordarshan, country’s public service broadcaster has join hands to telecast TV bilingual programme ‘Bapu Zinda Hain (Mahatma Lives)’ on 1-2 October 2019.
• The objective of programme is to celebrate his ideas and teachings and how it has shaped the lives of people in India as well as around the world.

Banking, Business & Economic Affairs

• The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) superseded the Punjab and Maharashtra Co-operative (PMC) Bank and provided a toll-free number to be used by customers for grievances and redressal.
• Depositors can dial 1800223993 or visit the PMC website to file grievances, the bank said. 
• RBI also appointed Jai Bhagwan Bhoria as the bank's administrator with all powers of the board.
• The board of IDBI Bank has given in-principle approval to divest its 19.18% stake in the Asset Reconstruction Company (India) (ARCIL). 
• The sale would comprise 6.23 crore equity shares of the private-sector lender. 

MOUs & Agreements

• State-owned construction firm NBCC (India) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Department of Sports under Union Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports (MYAS) to provide Project Management Consultancy for development of National Sports University at Imphal, Manipur. 
• The approximate cost of project would be Rs.400 crore.

Awards & Honors

• Bollywood Actor Sanjay Kapoor has received an award for being the Most Inspiring Indian Bollywood Actor at the House of Commons of the United Kingdom. 
• He was earlier awarded in Norway for his performance in 'Lust Stories'.
• International Astronomical Union (IAU) has named a minor planet, orbiting Sun from between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter, after Indian classical singer Pandit Jasraj. 
• The Padma Vibhushan recipient has become the 1st Indian musician to have a celestial body named after them. 
• The minor planet was discovered on November 11, 2006, by the NASA-funded project Catalina Sky Survey.
• Physicist and Cosmologist Thanu Padmanabhan was conferred the prestigious M P Birla Memorial Award 2019 for his contributions to the world of cosmology. 

Deaths

• Veteran actor Viju Khote (77), known for his roles as 'Kalia' in 'Sholay' and 'Robert' in 'Andaz Apna Apna', passed away.
• The actor, who featured in over 300 Hindi and Marathi films, had been working in films since 1964. 
• He had also starred in the television show 'Zabaan Sambhalke'.

Science & Technology

• BRAHMOS Supersonic Cruise Missile, with major indigenous systems, was successfully test fired from Integrated Test Range (ITR), Chandipur in Odisha. 
• The missile was test-fired for its full strike range of 290-km during the launch jointly conducted by Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) and BrahMos Aerospace.
• The first extended version of BrahMos missile was successfully tested on 11 March, 2017, which had a strike range of 450 kilometres.

New Appointments

• Air Chief Marshal Rakesh Kumar Singh Bhadauria took charge as the 26th Chief of the Indian Air Force (IAF). 
• He has replaced Air Chief Marshal BS Dhanoa, who retired after 41 years of service.
• A Supreme Court bench headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Ranjan Gogoi has recommended former Delhi High Court Chief Justice Rajendra Menon as the next chairman of Armed Forces Tribunal (AFT). 
• The other members of bench included Justices SA Bobde and S Abdul Nazeer.

Books & Authors

• Lata Mangeshkar's sister, singer Meena Mangeshkar Khadikar released her Hindi book titled 'Didi aur Main', on Mangeshkar family. 
• The book was unveiled a day after Lata turned 90 years old.

Sports Current Affairs

• India won the SAFF Under-18 football Championship by defeating Bangladesh in final held in Kathmandu, Nepal. 
• Important Note : This is India’s maiden SAFF U-18 trophy.
• Portugal's Joao Vieira has become the oldest person to win a medal in World Athletics Championships history, achieving the feat aged 43. 
• Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton won the Russian Grand Prix, his 9th Grand Prix win this year.

• Theme of World Heart Day 2019 : "My Heart, Your Heart" 
• World Rabies day was observed on 28th September 2019.
• World Rabies Day is an international campaign coordinated by the Global Alliance for Rabies Control, a non-profit organization with headquarters in the US and UK.
•  Theme of World Rabies Day 2019 : “Rabies: Vaccinate to eliminate”
• A joint military exercise between India and Kazakhstan named KAZIND-2019 is scheduled to be held in Pithoragarh district, Uttarkhand from 3-15 October 2019.
• The main focus of this exercise is counter terrorism operation.

National Current Affairs

• Finance Ministry in a notification announced the deadline to link PAN with Aadhaar has been extended from September 30 to December 31, 2019. 
• The government is yet to notify the implications in case the linkage isn't done by the specified deadline. 
• The rule regarding the consequences of not linking PAN with Aadhaar was revised in the 2019 Budget.
• Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan today launched 'WING - Women Rise Together', a capacity development programme for women-led startups. 
• Supported by the government's Startup India, the programme aims to support aspiring and established female entrepreneurs by giving them access to incubation, workshops and investors.

Banking, Business & Economic Affairs

• The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has initiated Prompt Corrective Action (PCA) against Lakshmi Vilas Bank (LVB) due to high level of bad loans, lack of sufficient capital to manage risks and negative return on assets for two consecutive years.
• The RBI move comes amidst the Delhi Police's Economic Offences Wing registering a complaint against the board of LVB alleging cheating and misappropriation of funds.
• India is among the top 20 countries that have improved the most on the World Bank's Ease of Doing Business 2020 report.
• India made it easier to do business in four areas measured by the bank's annual survey such as starting a business, resolving insolvency, trading across borders and construction permits.

• The Ministry of Commerce and Industry has banned the export of all varieties of onions with immediate effect amid rising prices. 
• Price of onions touched as much as ₹80 per kilogram in several states across the country.
• The Indian Railways has now enabled QR code-based paperless ticket booking at 12 stations of the North Western Railway (NWR) zone.
• Travellers can book unreserved tickets at the last minute using the facility.

• Former Foreign Secretary K.P.S. Menon (Jr.) (90) passed away.
• Mr. Menon was Foreign Secretary from 1987 to 1989. 
• A 1951 batch of the Indian Foreign Service (IFS), he had also served as Ambassador to Bangladesh, Egypt, Japan, Hungary and China.
• Mexican singer and six-time Grammy Award nominee José José (71) passed away.
• Referred by his fans as 'El Príncipe de la Canción' (The Prince of Song), José had been battling pancreatic cancer. 
• Joseph Wilson (69), the American diplomat who challenged former US President over the invasion of Iraq, has passed away.
• He had disproved allegations used by the Bush administration as grounds for invasion that then-Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein had bought uranium from Africa. 
• He was the acting ambassador to Iraq in the run-up to the 1991 Gulf War.

• Vice President, M Venkaiah Naidu today presented the prestigious Saraswati Samman award to Telegu poet K Siva Reddy for his collection of poems titled Pakkaki Ottigilite (Turning Aside While Lying Down).

• Bollywood Actor Ayushmann Khurrana won the Actor of the Year award at the 11th edition of GQ Men of the Year Awards held in Mumbai.

• Today (27th September) is World Tourism Day.
• The purpose of this day is to raise awareness on the role of tourism within the international community and to demonstrate how it affects social, cultural, political and economic values worldwide.
• The World Tourism Day celebration was started by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) in the year 1980.
• This date was chosen as on that day in 1970, the Statutes of the UNWTO were adopted. The adoption of these Statutes is considered a milestone in global tourism. 
• The official celebrations this year's World Tourism Day took place in Budapest, Hungary.
• In India, the celebrations began in Goa and are organised by Goa Tourism Development Corporation (GTDC). 
  
• Theme of World Tourism Day 2019 : “Tourism and Jobs – A better future for all”
• India advanced 4 places from 48th to the 44th in the recently released IMD World Digital Competitiveness ranking 2019.

• Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani met today in New York. 
• Both leaders discussed bilateral relations and exchanged views on regional and global developments of mutual interest.
• The meeting took place amid tensions between Iran and the US, and the two leaders also exchanged views on the situation.
• Saudi Arabia will offer tourist visas for the 1st time, launching a new visa regime for 49 countries. 
• Female tourists will not be required to wear the body-covering abaya robe but will be required to wear "modest clothing". 
• Note : Saudi visas are currently restricted to expat workers, their dependents and Muslim pilgrims travelling to holy sites in Mecca and Medina.
• At an annual BRICS meeting on the margins of the 74th session of the UN General Assembly today, the BRICS nations called for the need for early adoption of a Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism (CCIT). 
• "The ministers reiterated their strong condemnation of terrorism in all its forms and manifestations whenever, wherever and by whomsoever committed", a statement released by the countries stated.
• To tackle Islamophobia, Pakistan, Turkey and Malaysia will jointly launch an English language TV channel.
• The announcement came following a meeting between the three countries' leaders on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly session.
• Series and films would be produced on Muslim history to educate/inform our own people and the world.

National Current Affairs

• The residents of Delhi can avail the three emergency services of Police, Fire brigade and Ambulance by dialling a single number 112.
• A person can dial 112 from phone or press the power button thrice on smartphone quickly to activate a panic call to Emergency Response Centre (ERC).
• With an aim to spread awareness about nutrition of children and women, the Department of Women & Child Development and Mission Shakti, Government of Odisha, in collaboration with United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) unveiled a mascot named ‘Tikki Mausi’. 
• The state government initiative highlights that Women and children are central to any welfare programme.
• Tikki Mausi is gregarious character and is an empathetic protagonist with extensive knowledge on all issues related to women and children, thus loves to talk to people and raise their awareness on key positive social behaviors and practices.
• The mascot has been named so in reference to second mother of a child.
• In line with India’s intended target of becoming TB-free India before 2025, the ministry of Health and Family Welfare launched ‘TB Harega, Desh Jeetega’ campaign in New Delhi. 
• Along with the campaign government also launched ‘National TB Prevalence Survey’, the country’s largest-ever conducted TB prevalence survey.
• Note : The global target to eliminate TB worldwide is 2030.

• Delhi Police has filed an FIR against Lakshmi Vilas Bank's board directors, on a complaint by Religare Finvest (RFL). 
• The FIR alleged the directors misappropriated ₹790 crore that RFL kept with the bank as a fixed deposit. 

Science & Technology

• American multinational technology company Google is celebrating its 21st birthday today (September 27, 2019).
• Google was founded by PhD students Larry Page and Sergey Brin at Stanford University. 
• They named its “Googol”. Googol is a mathematical term and it equals to 10 raised to the power of 100.

Awards & Honors

• The Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) has been selected as the best airport in the Asia-Pacific region in terms of services it offered to passengers. 
• CIAL topped in the 5-15 million passenger category in Airport Service Quality's (ASQ) annual survey conducted by Airport Council International (ACI). 
• Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina has been conferred with prestigious ‘Vaccine Hero’ award of Global Alliance for Vaccination and Immunisations (GAVI) in recognition of Bangladesh’s outstanding success in vaccination to immunise children. 
• President of India Ram Nath Kovind, presented Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prizes 2019, for outstanding contributions in science and technology at a function held at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi. Here is the winners list in various categories :

• The President of Athletics Federation of India (AFI), Adille Sumariwallam has been re-elected as Member of Council of International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF). 
• His election is for a second four-year term.
• The Bulgarian Economist Christina Georgieva was appointed as the new head of the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

International Current Affairs

• Prime Minister Narendra Modi, along with United Nations chief Antonio Guterres and other world leaders, inaugurated the 50 kilowatt Gandhi Solar Park at the headquarters of the UN in New York. 
• The leaders also released a commemorative postage stamp of Mahatma Gandhi issued by the United Nations at the programme 'Leadership Matters: Relevance of Mahatma Gandhi in the Contemporary World'.
• Army Chief General Bipin Rawat has confirmed that Balakot terror camp has been reactivated by Pakistan very recently, almost 7 months after Indian Air Force jets bombed the Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) terrorist facility there.
• Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been nominated by President Reuven Rivlin to form the country's next government. 
• Netanyahu's Likud party has won 32 seats and needs support from at least 61 out of the total 120 MPs to form the government. 
• The Australian capital of Canberra has become the 1st city in the country to legalise, possessing and growing marijuana for personal use.

National Current Affairs

• The Election Commission of India has announced that elections for Maharashtra and Haryana Assemblies will be held on October 21. 
• The elections will be held in a single phase for 288 seats in Maharashtra and 90 seats in Haryana. 
• The counting of votes for both the states will take place on October 24.
• Rajasthan's cultural festival 'Abhaneri Festival', named after the village Abhaneri in the Dausa district, is being held from September 30 to October 1. 
• Abhaneri is popular for the Chand Baori stepwell, one of the largest stepwells built over a thousand years ago. 
• The festival will witness various Rajasthani & local folk performances like Kachhi Ghori, Kalbeliya, Ghoomar and Bhawai.
• Home Minister Amit Shah has announced that a mobile app will be used in 2021 census. 
• This will be the first time in the history of census in India that data will be collected through a mobile app. 
• The Supreme Court is going to have a permanent 5-judge Constitution bench from October 1 to decide cases related to the interpretation of Constitution, statutes, and laws. 
• Presently, the Constitution bench, comprising a minimum of five judges, is set up on a reference made by a 3-judge bench on complex questions of law, which require authoritative pronouncement.
• Madhya Pradesh CM Kamal Nath laid the foundation stone of the Bhopal metro rail project to be set up at a cost of ₹6,941.4 crore. 
• The Bhopal metro will be called 'Bhoj Metro', named after Raja Bhoj, the city's erstwhile ruler. 
• Around 28 metro stations, including two underground, will be built under the project.

Banking, Business & Economic Affairs

• The RBI has prescribed a Turn Around Time (TAT) framework to reverse failed digital transactions. 
• It directed banks to auto-reverse failed ATM transactions, when the amount is debited but not dispensed, within five days. 
• It also prescribed a ₹100-per-day penalty for delay in resolution, adding the amount should be transferred to customers' accounts without waiting for them to file claims.
• The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) increased the withdrawal limit for crisis-hit Punjab and Maharashtra Co-operative (PMC) Bank's customers from the earlier ₹1,000 to ₹10,000 for 6 months. 
• With this relaxation, over 60% of the depositors of Mumbai-based bank will be able to withdraw their entire account balance. 
• The ₹10,000 limit includes ₹1,000 already withdrawn by the customers.
• Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has announced that the national capital will soon become the "1st state" to implement the Street Vending Act, 2014, to provide legal protection to street vendors and hawkers. "
• The government has notified an 8.65% interest rate on Employees' Provident Fund (EPF) for 2018-19. 
• Around ₹54,000 crore will be credited to the accounts of over 6 crore subscribers of retirement fund body Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO).
• This is 10 basis points higher than the EPF interest rate of 8.55% in 2017-18.
• The government has reconstituted the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister for a period of 2 years, effective from today (26th September 2019). 
• Bibek Debroy will continue to be the Chairman and Ratan P Watal will continue to be the Member Secretary. 
• While Ashima Goel continues to be one of the part-time members, Sajjid Chinoy was named as the second part-time member.
• PM Narendra Modi in an India-Pacific Islands Developing States (PSIDS) Leaders' Meeting announced a $150 million line of credit to the member nations for undertaking solar, renewable energy and climate-related projects.
• Modi also announced the allocation of a $12-million grant to PSIDS ($1 million each) towards the implementation of high impact developmental projects.

MOUs & Agreements

• The United States signed a deal with El Salvador to help the Central American nation give refuge to more asylum seekers. 
• Individuals arriving at the US-Mexico border through El Salvador should be able to seek protection there even if they intend to apply for asylum in the US.

• Note : This increased the strength of judges in the SC to 34 which is the highest in its history. 
• Former BCCI president N Srinivasan's daughter Rupa Gurunath is set to become the 1st  woman president of a BCCI affiliated unit as she will take over the position of the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) head. 
• Army chief General Bipin Rawat will take over as the Chairman of Chiefs of Staff Committee (COSC).
• He will replace Air Chief Marshal BS Dhanoa who will be retiring by the end of this month. 
• Note : The senior-most among the chiefs of the three services is appointed as the chairman of Chiefs of Staff Committee.
• Noida-based fintech giant Paytm has promoted its Senior Vice President of Finance Vikas Garg as the startup's Deputy Chief Financial Officer. 

Science & Technology

• The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) successfully launched the RamanSat 2 miniature satellite designed by 17-year-old student Aabhaas Sikka. 
• The satellite was developed by Sikka during his internship with SPACE India with help from SPACE Group Founder and CMD Sachin Bahmba along with the company's research team.
• It is carrying equipment to measure the radiation from Sun and space.
• ISRO chief K Sivan has announced that India's Mangalyaan mission, which was initially meant to last 6 months, completed 5 years of orbiting Mars. 
• "It's working and continuously sending pictures. It still has some time to go," he added. 
• The UAE's Hazzaa AlMansoori has become the 1st Arab astronaut to reach the International Space Station (ISS). 
• Hazzaa was a part of the UAE's armed forces and had worked as a military pilot. 

Books & Authors

• A book titled 'Sridevi: The Eternal Screen Goddess', which is based on the late actress Sridevi's life is going to be released soon.
• The book is written by author-screenwriter Satyarth Nayak.
• Bollywood Actor Kajol has penned the foreword of the book.

Deaths

• Former French President Jacques Chirac (86) passed away.
• He served as President for two terms spanning 12 years between 1995-2007 and had twice served as the Prime Minister of the country. 
• One of Chirac's political reforms was to cut the presidential term of office from 7 years to 5 years.
• Former India Test opener Madhav Apte (86) passed away.
• Apte was the 4th-oldest living Indian Test cricketer. 
• He played seven Tests for India, scoring 542 runs at an average of 49.27 from November 1952 to April 1953. 
• He played 67 first-class matches, scoring 3,336 runs and slamming six centuries.
• Telugu actor Venu Madhav (50) passed away due to kidney-related ailments.
• The actor is known for his role in films like, 'Sampradayam', 'Master', 'Tholi Prema', 'Yuvaraju', 'Simhadri', among others.

Awards & Honors

• Prime Minister Narendra Modi has received the 'Global Goalkeeper Award' for the 'Swachh Bharat' campaign from Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. 
• At the same event, Payal Jangid, a 17-year-old campaigner against child labour and child marriage in Rajasthan, was given the Changemaker Award by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. 
• The Government of India has instituted the highest civilian award in the field of contribution to the unity and integrity of India, in the name of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. 
• The award will be announced on the occasion of the National Unity Day, the birth anniversary of Sardar Patel (October 31). 
• This award would consist of a medal and a citation.
• 16 year old Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg has been awarded the 2019 Right Livelihood Award (also known as Sweden's 'alternative Nobel Prize'). 
• She was recognised "for inspiring and amplifying political demands for urgent climate action reflecting scientific facts".

• Guo Jianmei (Chinese lawyer)
• Zoya Akhtar directorial 'Gully Boy', starring Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt in the lead roles, has been declared as India's official entry for the 92nd Academy Awards (OSCARS) in the Best International Feature Film category. 
• 'Super Deluxe', 'AndhaDhun' and 'Article 15' were among the other films considered by the jury. 
• Note : The Academy Awards will be held on February 9, 2020.
• NDTV's Ravish Kumar was awarded the 1st Gauri Lankesh Memorial Award for Journalism by the Gauri Lankesh Memorial Trust. 
• Important Note : Last month Ravish was awarded the Ramon Magsaysay Award 2019.
• Bollywood Actor Amitabh Bachchan has been unanimously selected for the Dadasaheb Phalke Award 2019. 
• Dadasaheb Phalke Award is the highest and most acclaimed award in Indian cinema conferred upon a veteran luminary in appreciation of his or her lifetime cinematic achievement.
• Hollywood actor Tom Hanks will be honoured with Cecil B DeMille Award at the Golden Globe Awards on January 5, 2020.
• The award recognises an individual who has made a lasting impact on the film industry. 
• Billy Porter became the 1st openly gay black man to win the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for 'Pose' at 71st Emmy Awards 2019. 
• Jodie Comer won the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for 'Killing Eve'. 
• The award for Outstanding Television Movie went to 'Black Mirror: Bandersnatch', while 'Chernobyl' was named Outstanding Limited Series.
• 'Game of Thrones' season 8 won the Outstanding Drama Series award.

Sports Current Affairs

• Rohtak-born batsman Shafali Verma has become the youngest Indian to play a T20I, achieving the feat at the age of 15 years and 239 days against South Africa. 
• Note : The previous record was held by Sneha Deepthi, who had made her debut at the age of 16 years and 204 days against Bangladesh in 2013.
• Barcelona forward Lionel Messi and 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup-winning US co-captain Megan Rapinoe were named The Best FIFA Men's and Women's Player, respectively. 
• Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp and former US women's football team coach Jill Ellis won The Best Men's and Women's Coach award, respectively. 
• Hungarian footballer Daniel Zsori won the Puskás Award for his overhead kick goal.
