  • Today (31st October) is World Savings Day.
    • This day was established on October 31, 1924, during the 1st International Savings Bank Congress (World Society of Savings Banks) in Milano, Italy.
  • Today (31st October) is World Cities Day.
    • Aim of this day : To promote international community’s interest in global urbanization, push forward cooperation among countries in meeting opportunities and addressing challenges of urbanization, and contributing to sustainable urban development around the world.  
    • Theme of World Cities Day 2019 : "Changing the world: innovations and better life for future generations"
  • Today is Halloween.
    • The word Halloween came from 'Hallowed evening', and is the day before All Hallows Day - also known as All Saints' Day.
  • 29th October was observed as International Internet Day.
    • This was the year of 1969 when Charley Kline, a student programmer at the UCLA transmitted the first ever message on 29th of October in 1969.
    • Since the year 2005 the International Internet Day has been celebrated to commemorate this momentous day in the history of telecommunications and technology. 
  • 27th October was World Day for Audiovisual Heritage.
    • This commemorative day was chosen by UNESCO in the year 2005 to raise of awareness of the significance of and preservation risks recorded sound and audiovisual documents (films, sound and video recordings, radio and television programmes).

  • US President Donald Trump has confirmed that ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi was killed in a US military operation in Syria.
    • Important Note : The US military operation to kill ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi was named after Kayla Mueller, a humanitarian worker from Arizona who was held hostage by the terrorist group. She was tortured by ISIS and repeatedly sexually abused by Baghdadi himself. 
  • Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri announced his resignation amid the ongoing anti-government protests. 
    • The protests were triggered by the government's plans to impose taxes on WhatsApp calls and other apps, with demonstrators demanding broader economic reforms and an end to corruption.
National Current Affairs
  • Nation is observing Rashtriya Ekta Diwas (National Unity Day) to mark the 144th birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel
    • Today is also the 4th anniversary of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's pet project 'Ek Bharat Shrestha Bharat' which aims to strengthen the cultural bond between the states. 
    • On this day in 2018, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel's memorial in Gujarat's Narmada district. 
      • Called the Statue of Unity, the bronze sculpture is the world's tallest statue measuring 600 feet (182m) and overshadows China's Spring Temple Buddha (153m) and USA's Statue of Liberty (93m). 
      • The 182-metre-tall Statue of Unity honouring Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel is double the height of USA's Statue of Liberty (93 metres).

  • 28th October 2019 was observed as National Ayurveda Day.
    • Ayurveda is the oldest healing science. It orginated in India more than 6000 years ago.
    • The literal meaning of Ayurveda is "Knowledge of Life".
    • To celebrate this day, the Al India Institute of Ayurveda in collaboration with Ministry of AYUSH organised a programme titled ‘Run for Ayurveda’. 
    • Around 3,000 people participated in the event.
  • Women in Delhi will not have to pay for bus rides in the state-owned DTC buses (both AC and Non-AC). 
  • Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar launched around 35,000 schemes worth over ₹1,600 crore as a part of the 'Jal-Jeevan-Hariyali' campaign that seeks to boost green cover and the water table in the state. 
    • Foundation stones were laid for 32,781 schemes, while another 2,391 were inaugurated by the CM.

  • Uber is going to launch its financial service Uber Money in 2020 to support both Uber riders and drivers.
    • Uber Money would be based on the National Payments Corporation of India's (NPCI) real-time payment system Unified Payments Interface (UPI) and will give drivers direct access to their money. 
    • Note : With this, India will be one of the 6 countries to get Uber Money.
  • World Bank President David Malpass has announced that the financing agency expects to continue with its $6 billion annual lending target for India
    • As 97 projects, with $24 billion committed, were presently being executed with loan assistance from the World Bank. 
  • China's legislature has passed a cryptography law amid the country's plans to launch its own digital currency. 
    • The law, effective from January 1, aims to strengthen the management of passwords and set standards for information and national security. 
    • This follows President Xi Jinping calling for China to accelerate the development of blockchain technologies.
  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) imposed a ₹1 crore penalty on Bandhan Bank for not meeting its promoter holding norms.  
    • Bandhan Bank had failed to pare the shareholding of Bandhan Financial Holdings from about 82% to 40% of its paid-up voting capital within three years from commencement. 
    • The deadline was set for August 2018.
  • Pakistan has issued a commemorative coin to mark Guru Nanak Dev's 550th birth anniversary in November. 
    • It will be available at Gurdwara Darbar Sahib in Pakistan's Kartarpur and is worth Pakistani Rupees 50. 
    • Note : The Kartarpur Corridor, constructed by Pakistan and India to allow Indian pilgrims to visit the gurdwara, will open from November 9.
  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has imposed a fine of Rs 1 crore on Pune-based Janata Sahakari Bank and Rs 25 lakh on Jalgaon Peoples Co-operative Bank for violating income recognition, advances management and asset classification norms.
  • 3 Indian-origin CEOs have been featured in a list of world's top 10 best-performing chief executives.
    • On the 6th spot is Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayen, followed by MasterCard CEO Ajay Banga, ranked 7th and Microsoft chief Satya Nadella on the 9th spot. 
    • The Best-Performing CEOs in the World, 2019' list compiled by the Harvard Business Review (HBR) features 100 CEOs and has been topped by American technology company NVIDIA's CEO Jensen Huang.Among the top 10 chief executives on the list, three spots have been occupied by the Indian-origin CEOs.

  • Former Supreme Court Judge and Karnataka Lokayukta N Venkatachala (89) passed away.
    • He served as a Supreme Court judge from July 1992 to July 1995. 
  • Paul Barrere (71), the guitarist-vocalist of rock band Little Feat, passed away. 
    • Paul joined the band in 1972.
  • Veteran Communist Party of India (CPI) leader and former Lok Sabha MP Gurudas Dasgupta (83) passed away.

  • Lieutenant Colonel Swaroop Singh Kuntal became the fastest Indian to complete Ironman Malaysia triathlon in a record time of 12 hours and 14 minutes.
    • The triathlon consists of 3.8 km sea swimming, followed by 180 km cycling and finally 42.2 km of running.
  • Nirmal Purja, a 36-year-old Nepali mountaineer has become the world's fastest climber after scaling the world's 14 highest peaks in a record time of over 6 months.
New Appointments
  • Radha Krishna Mathur was sworn-in as the 1st Lieutenant Governor of Union Territory of Ladakh.
  • Girish Chandra Murmu was sworn-in as the 1st Lieutenant Governor of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir
  • President Ram Nath Kovind has appointed Justice Sharad Arvind Bobde as the 47th Chief Justice of India (CJI).
    • He is set to take oath on November 18. 
    • His name was recommended by Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi earlier this month. 
  • BJP leader Manohar Lal Khattar took oath as Haryana Chief Minister for a second consecutive term. 
    • JJP President Dushyant Chautala was sworn-in as Deputy CM.
  • Sophie Wilmes is set to take over as new caretaker Prime Minister of Belgium.
    • With this, she becomes the 1st female to hold the position. 
  • Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Anup Kumar Singh took charge as the new Director General of the National Security Guard (NSG) from October 28.
  • Pavan Kapoor, a 1990 batch Indian Foreign Service officer took charge as the new Indian Ambassador to UAE.
Sports Current Affairs
  • Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty defeated world number six pair Hiroyuki Endo and Yuta Watanabe of Japan in the BWF World Tour 750 French Open men's doubles semifinal. 
    • This is the 1st time an Indian men's doubles pair has reached the final of a World Tour 750 event. 
    • The pair will meet top-ranked Marcus Gideon and Kevin Sanjaya.
  • Former England women's cricket team bowler Eileen Ash, the oldest living Test cricketer, turned 108 years old. 
    • She made her debut against Australia and played seven Tests for England either side of World War II, taking 10 wickets at an average of 23.00. 
    • In 2011, Ash had become the 1st-ever female Test cricketer to turn 100.
  • The Bangladesh Cricket Board has agreed to play the second Test of the upcoming two-match series against India at Eden Gardens in Kolkata as a Day-Night match
    • The match will be both India and Bangladesh's 1st-ever Test under floodlights

    International Current Affairs
    • Justin Trudeau has won a second term as Canada's Prime Minister as his Liberal Party will return to power as a minority government, preliminary results showed.
    • Hong Kong's legislature has formally withdrew planned legislation that would have allowed extradition of people to mainland China. 
      • The planned bill had sparked widespread protests in the city. 
      • However, the move only meets one of the five demands by pro-democracy protestors and may not lead to the end of months-long protests.
    • Abortion has been decriminalised in Northern Ireland
      • Earlier, abortion was only permitted in Northern Ireland if a woman's life was at risk or there was a danger of permanent and serious damage to her physical or mental health. 
      • Note : Same-sex marriages have also been legalised in Northern Ireland.
    National Current Affairs
    • The Disabled and People over 80 years of age can now cast their vote through postal ballot, the government announced today. 
      • On EC's recommendation, the government amended the Conduct of Election Rules, 1961, allowing senior citizens and disabled people in the absentee voter list. 
      • Earlier, voting through postal ballot was available to armed forces and those on poll duties.
    • The Assam Cabinet has decided that no government jobs will be given to those having more than two children after January 1, 2021.
      • It also adopted a land policy, which will give three bighas of agricultural land to landless indigenous people and half a bigha for constructing a house. 
    • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has announced that the Siachen area has been opened for tourists and tourism. 
      • The Siachen Glacier, the highest battlefield in the world, is a part of Ladakh.
    Science  & Technology
    • The government has launched a challenge for startups to present alternative solutions to single-use plastics which it seeks to phase out by 2022. 
      • The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade will award the first and second place holders ₹3 lakh and ₹2 lakh respectively. 
    • The US Air Force has received its 1st anti-drone weapon system from defence contractor Raytheon
      • The system, introduced about a year ago by Raytheon, is a high-energy laser system mounted on a small all-terrain vehicle which uses electro-optical/infrared sensors to detect and track drones and neutralise them in seconds. 
      • The system can deliver "dozens" of laser shots on single charge.

    • Bollywood Actress Vidya Balan has received the Youth Icon Award from Imperial College London.
    Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
    • The Union Cabinet has approved the merger of state-run telecom operators BSNL and MTNL
      • The government will raise ₹15,000 crore via sovereign bonds for the revival of the companies and will provide them 4G spectrum on an administrative basis. 
      • Assets of BSNL and MTNL worth ₹38,000 crore will be monetised.
    • India is considering tariff and non-tariff measures to limit Turkish and Malaysian imports over their leaders' comments on Kashmir. 
      • The options reportedly include strict quality tests and a safeguard tax. 
    • Saudi Arabia replaced Iraq as top oil supplier to India in September after a gap of about 13 months.
      • The two OPEC members accounted for about 43% of India's overall imports. 
      • India's oil imports fell 8.4% to their lowest in more than three years in September to 3.82 million barrels per day (bpd).
    • The IT Ministry has launched a new version of its Unified Payment Interface (UPI) platform Bharat Interface for Money (BHIM) app including new initiatives and features. 
      • BHIM 2.0 will consist of additional languages, a 'Donation' gateway and an increased transaction limit.
    Deaths
    • Don Valentine (87), the founder of American venture capital firm Sequoia Capital, passed away.
      • The firm revealed that an early mutual fund group, Capital Group had first allowed Valentine to form a $3-million venture fund in 1974.
      • Among his first bets from that pool of capital were Atari and Apple.
    New Appointments
    • M L Khattar will take oath as Haryana Chief Minister for a second term tomorrow. 
      • Jannayak Janta Party (JJP) chief Dushyant Chautala will take oath as Deputy CM. 
    • 1987 batch IAS officer Pankaj Kumar as the new CEO of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI)
      • Kumar is currently Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. 
    • Japan's Emperor Naruhito (59), formally proclaimed his ascension to the throne in a ceremony attended by dignitaries from more than 180 countries, including Indian President Ram Nath Kovind. 
      • Naruhito, the 1st Japanese emperor born after WWII, acceded to the throne in May when his father, Akihito, became the first Japanese monarch to abdicate in two centuries.
    • Bollywood Actor Ayushmann Khurrana has been roped in by UNICEF and the Government of India to build awareness and raise his voice against sexual abuse of children
    • Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik has been transferred and appointed as Governor of Goa
      • Girish Chandra Murmu has been appointed as Lieutenant Governor of J&K, while Radha Krishna Mathur has been appointed as Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh
      • Important Note : J&K and Ladakh will officially become Union Territories from October 31.
    Sports Current Affairs
    • Former Team India captain Sourav Ganguly has taken over as BCCI President.
      • With this, Ganguly became the 1st ex-captain to hold the post full-time since Maharajkumar of Vizianagram (Vizzy) in 1954. 
    • Former top-ranked men's singles tennis player Andy Murray won his first title since March 2017 after beating Stan Wawrinka in the final of the European Open.
    • Former Australian cricketer Andrew McDonald has been appointed as Rajasthan Royals' new head coach for a 3 -year term.

      • India is going to host the 91st Interpol General Assembly in 2022 after a proposal received the overwhelming support of member countries at this year's congregation at Santinago in Chile yesterday.
        • The Assembly will be held as part of celebrations of the 75th anniversary of Indian Independence.
        • Note : The International Criminal Police Organisation (Interpol) had hosted the general assembly, where representatives of all member countries converge, in India in 1997.
        • The general assembly of Interpol is an annual exercise hosted by member countries. 
        • Based in Lyon, France, Interpol is an international police cooperation organisation with 194 member states and 100 years of experience of international cooperation in policing.  
      • President Ram Nath Kovind is on a two-nation tour to Philippines and Japan.
        • During his visit to Philippines, India and the Philippines signed 4 agreements covering maritime domain, security, tourism, science and technology and culture.
        • Both countries have committed to work closely to defeat and eliminate terrorism in all its forms and manifestations.  
        • The two countries will set up a group of experts to research and document their ancient ties.
      National Current Affairs
      • 2-day long manoeuvres by Sudarshan Chakra Vahini of Indian Army started today at Jaisalmer field firing range in Rajasthan. 
        • In this war exercise, the army is going to exhibit its strength regarding Agni Missile and artillery.
        • Artillery, Arms and mechanized forces, Army air defence and helicopters of army aviation are participating in this exercise to test mutual coordination.
      • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has approved a proposal for admission of girl children in Sainik Schools from academic session 2021-22 in a phased manner. 
        • The decision has been taken following the success of the pilot project started by the Ministry for admission of girl children in Sainik School Chhingchhip in Mizoram two years ago. 
      • The Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying released the 20th Livestock Census -2019 today.
        • According to this census, India's livestock population has increased to over 535 million showing an increase of 4.6 per cent over Livestock Census-2012. 
        • The cow population is over 145 million, increasing by 18 per cent over the previous census.
        • As per the census :
          • Share of Cattle - 36 per cent
          • Share of Goat - 27 per cent
          • Share of Buffaloes - 20 per cent
          • Share of Sheep - 14 per cent 
          • Share of Pigs - 2 per cent
        • West Bengal reported the highest increase of over 23 per cent in livestock population, followed by Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar and Madhya Pradesh.
      Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
      • India is expected to be the biggest driver of global GDP growth after China in 2024, according to International Monetary Fund (IMF)'s projections adjusted for purchasing power parity. 
        • India's share of global growth is projected to rise to 15.5%. 
        • The US is projected to fall to 3rd place, with its share expected to slip from 13.8% now to 9.2% by 2024.
      • 8 day long Baliyatra, one of the biggest trade fairs of Odisha, is scheduled to begin on November 12. 
        • This year’s Baliyatra will be jointly organized by the Cuttack District Administration, District Cultural Council, and the Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC).
      • Sri Lanka has been removed from the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) list of countries at risk for money laundering.
        • Sri Lanka was first included in the blacklist in 2011. 
        • By 2012, Sri Lanka was listed in the list as a dangerous country with no commitment to the financial security plan.
        • The government together with the Central Bank and other financial institutions, has taken several measures since 2016 to ensure the financial security of the country.

      • Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu today presented Most Eminent Senior Citizen Award to legal luminary and former Attorney General K. Parasaran at a function in New Delhi. 
        • Mr Parasaran was honoured with the award on the occasion of the Elder’s Day celebration of Age Care India, an organization working for the welfare of the elderly.
        • The Award is a fitting recognition of Mr Parasaran’s exceptional contribution to the field of law and justice as well as his extraordinary personality.

      • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has released a book titled 'Bridgital Nation' in New Delhi today.
        • The book has been authored by Chairman, Tata Sons, N Chandrasekaran and Roopa Purushothaman.
      New Appointments
      • Indonesian President Joko Widodo was today sworn in for a second 5-year term. 
        • In his second and final term, he has pledged to attract more investment into Southeast Asia's biggest economy and focus on improving the country's human resources. 
        • Note : Widodo, a former furniture salesman, is the 1st President to come from outside Indonesia's traditional elite.
      • Senior IPS officer of Gujarat cadre Anup Kumar Singh has been appointed as Director-General of the National Security Guard (NSG).
      Sports Current Affairs
      • After scoring 212(255) in the third Test against South Africa in Ranchi, India opener Rohit Sharma's average in Tests on home soil rose to 99.84. 
        • With this, he overtook Australian legend Don Bradman's record for the highest average at home (minimum 10 innings). 
        • Bradman scored 4,332 runs in 33 home Tests between 1928 and 1948 at an average of 98.22.

        • India has been ranked 102nd out of 117 countries on Global Hunger Index 2019
          • Important Note : India is the 2nd lowest-ranked among the South Asian countries, with Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal ranked 94th, 88th and 73rd on the index.  
          • Last year's rank : 103rd
        • Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in UAE on a ‘historic visit’.
          • Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces received him at the Presidential Airport. 
          • The two leaders later witnessed the signing of several agreements and memoranda of understanding between the UAE and Russia. 
          • The agreements span various vital sectors, including trade and investment, and sustainability and environment, intending to develop strategic partnerships between the UAE and Russia further.
          • Note : This is Putin’s first visit to the UAE after 2007.
        • US President Donald Trump will host the 2020 G7 summit at the Trump National Doral golf resort in Florida
          • Note : The summit will take place next year from June 10 to 12.
        National Current Affairs
        • Karnataka has emerged as the most innovative major state, as per the NITI Aayog's 1st-ever India Innovation Index 2019
          • This index aims to aid policymakers in designing the economic growth policies for their regions. 
          • Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra ranked 2nd and 3rd respectively.
          • Among cities and union territories, Delhi topped the list. 
          • Bihar and Jharkhand stood last in the index.
        • In Madhya Pradesh, the 10th edition of the Rashtriya Sanskriti Mahotsav-National Cultural Festival is being organized by the Union Ministry of Culture under the 'Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat' campaign.
          • The National Cultural festival will display diverse forms of folk, art and culture of 22 states. 
          • The concept of National Cultural Festival was conceived in the year 2015. 
          • So far, the Ministry of Culture has organized nine such Festivals.
        • The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) in its latest guidelines announced that no child in pre-school aged between 3-6 years should be made to give written or oral exam.
        Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
        • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has increased the withdrawal limit for depositors of scam-hit Punjab & Maharashtra Cooperative (PMC) Bank to 40,000 rupees from 25,000 rupees per account over the next six months.
          • This is the 3rd time the regulator has increased the withdrawal limit since its clamped down on the bank on September 23.
        • Bangladesh has become the 2nd-fastest growing economy in South Asia after Bhutan
          • World Bank in its report 'South Asia Economic Focus, Making (De) Centralization Work' released today says that GDP growth rate of the country is projected to moderate to 7.2 per cent this fiscal year and 7.3 per cent in 2020 in Bangladesh.
        • The term of Bank of Baroda's CEO and MD PS Jayakumar, leaving both the positions vacant at the state-run bank. 
          • Jayakumar, who was first appointed to the positions in 2015 for three years, received a year-long term extension in 2018. 
          • Note : Dena Bank and Vijaya Bank had merged with Bank of Baroda during Jayakumar's tenure.
        • The State Bank of India (SBI) re-entered the Top 10 most valued domestic firms in India by their market valuation. 
          • Two weeks earlier, the bank lost its tenth spot to Bajaj Finance in the list. At the close of trade on Monday, SBI's market capitalisation stood at ₹2,27,979 crore, higher than the ₹2,25,080-crore market capitalisation of Bajaj Finance.
        • Air India has become the 1st airline in the world to use a Taxibot on an A-320 aircraft with passengers on board.
          • Taxibot is a robot-used aircraft tractor for taxiing an aircraft from parking bay to runway and vice-versa. 
          • Air India Chairman and Managing Director : Ashwani Lohani
        • The Assam government will be hosting a 2-day stakeholders' meeting between India and Bangladesh from 22nd of this month in Guwahati.
          • A 70-member delegation from Bangladesh, including two Central ministers and two advisors of the Prime Minister, will be participating in the meet. 
          • A similar top-level team from India, including Union ministers, will represent the host nation.

        • Internationally acclaimed painter of Bangladesh Kalidas Karmakar (73) passed away today.

        • NASA astronauts Christina Koch and Jessica Meir successfully concluded humanity's 1st-ever spacewalk with only women
          • The two women worked for over seven hours in the vacuum of space to conduct International Space Station's maintenance. 
          • With this, astronaut Meir also became the 15th woman out of a total of 228 spacewalkers.
        • The Indian government is aiming to build the world's largest facial recognition system, as per a 172-page document released by the National Crime Records Bureau. 
          • The aim is to create a centralised database of faces to help catch criminals.

        • Former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly has been unanimously nominated as the new President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI)

        • Justice Sharad Arvind Bobde has been recommended by Chief Justice of India (CJI)  Ranjan Gogoi to succeed him.

            • Note : Exercise DHARMA GUARDIAN is an annual training event, which is being conducted in India since last year. In respect of Japan, it is crucial and significant in terms of security challenges faced by both the nations in the backdrop of global terrorism. 
          • Chinese President Xi Jinping is on a visit to Mamallapuram near Chennai today.
            • Mr Xi Jinping would be the second leader to visit Mamallapuram, after Zhou Enlai (visited in December 1956), reviving the traditional links between the ancient port town of India and China.
            • During this visit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Xi Jinping held an informal summit and agreed to work closely to further the economic development of both the nations.
            • Ways to enhance the bilateral trade volume, as well as trade value, were also discussed. 
          • India is going to extend a Line of Credit of over 60 million US Dollars to Comoros in the field of energy and maritime defence cooperation.
            • India will extend a Line of Credit of over 41.6 million US Dollars for setting up of 18 MW Power Plant in Moroni and another 20 million US Dollars for the procurement of High-Speed Interceptor Boats.
          • The 1st ever India International Cooperatives Trade Fair got underway in New Delhi today. 
            • The 3 day Fair is a major platform to promote export of products of cooperatives which will lead to enhanced rural and farm prosperity. 
            • Organisations from 36 countries are participating in the Fair.
          • The 2nd edition of Coordinated Patrol (CORPAT) of the Navies of India and Bangladesh commenced in Northern Bay of Bengal on Thursday.
            • Guided-missile destroyer INS Ranvijay and ingeniously built missile Corvette INS Kuthar are participating in the exercise along with BNS Ali Haider, and BNS Shadinota from Bangladesh. 
            • The 2-day patrol will be followed by the maiden edition of Bilateral Exercise of the navies of two countries at Visakhapatnam between October 12-16.
            • Improtant Points to Note
              • The India Bangladesh CORPAT commenced in 2018. 
              • The exercise aims at development of mutual communication and sharing of best practices between the two navies.
              • India and Bangladesh have a common territorial boundary of over 4000 km and a maritime boundary. 
              • This exercise will add a new dimension to the India- Bangladesh maritime relations, said the release.
          Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
          • Adani Group's Gautam Adani jumped eight places to claim the 2nd spot on the Forbes India Rich List 2019 with a wealth of $15.7 billion. 
            • Kotak Mahindra Bank MD Uday Kotak gained $4 billion to enter the top five for the first time with a fortune of $14.8 billion. 
            • Important Note : Ambani remains the richest Indian for the twelfth consecutive year.
          • Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal will attend the 9th Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership, RCEP Intersessional Ministerial meeting beginning tomorrow at Bangkok in Thailand. 
            • This will be the last Ministerial meeting before the 3rd Leaders Summit to be held on 4th of next month in Bangkok.
            • Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to attend the Summit. 
            • The 9th Intersessional Ministerial Meeting comes at a crucial stage where the RCEP is scheduled to be announced as concluded in November this year.
          Deaths
          • Soviet cosmonaut Alexei Leonov (85), the man who conducted the 1st-ever spacewalk, passed away.
            • On March 18, 1965, Leonov stepped out of his spacecraft for a spacewalk that lasted over 12 minutes. 
            • He was also selected as the first Soviet to walk on the Moon but that mission was cancelled.
          • Padma Shri awardee and veteran saxophone player Kadri Gopalnath (69) passed away.
            • An A grade artist in Akashwani, Gopalnath held concerts in different countries and recorded a number of CDs. 
            • He was considered as a pioneer in playing Carnatic ragas on his Saxophone.
            • Apart from Padma Shree, Gopalnath was conferred with Sangeetha Nataka Academy Award, Karnataka Kalasri award among others.
          Science & Technology
          • To explore the dynamic region where air meets space, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) launched a satellite called Icon, Ionospheric Connection Explorer. 
            • The refrigerator-sized satellite will study the airglow formed from gases in the ionosphere and also measure the charged environment around the 580-kilometer-high spacecraft. 
          Awards & Honors
          • The 2019 Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to Abiy Ahmed Ali (Ethiopian Prime Minister). 
            • He has been awarded for his decisive initiative to resolve the border conflict with Eritrea
            • Last year, the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Denis Mukwege and Nadia Murad for their efforts to end the use of sexual violence as a weapon of warfare.
          • Ayesha Khan, a 22-year-old woman from Uttar Pradesh, was made the UK's High Commissioner to India for a day
            • She had won the 'High Commissioner for a Day' competition, held to mark the 'International Day of the Girl Child'. 
          • Union Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan today gave away Kayakalp Awards to different Central Government institutions, district hospitals, community health centres and private hospitals for their work in maintaining high standards of sanitation and hygiene in public health facilities.
            • In the Central Government institutions, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Delhi bagged a cash prize of 3 crore rupees.
            • Jawaharlal Institute of Post-graduate Medical Education & Research, Puducherry received a cash award of 1.5 crore rupees.
            • Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Education & Research, Chandigarh and Safdarjung Hospital, Delhi and AIIMS, Bhubaneswar were among others which were felicitated for maintaining sanitation and hygiene.
          • Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu was conferred 'The Order of the Green Crescent', the highest Civilian Honour of Comoros, by Azali Assoumani, President of Comoros in Moroni.

              • The day is celebrated every year on 9th October marking the anniversary of the establishment of the Universal Postal Union in 1874 in the Swiss Capital, Bern.

            • India has fallen 10 places and ranked at the 68th position on an annual Global Competitiveness Index 2019 compiled by the World Economic Forum. 
              • The fall has been attributed to improvements witnessed by several other economies. India ranked high in terms of macroeconomic stability and market size. 
              • Important Note : Singapore has overtaken US to become the most competitive nation in the world.
            • Chinese President Xi Jinping is visiting India for the 2nd Informal Summit with Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Mamallapuram (Tamil Nadu).
              • As a strategy to build upon the ancient cultural and trade ties with China and also to showcase India's diversity, the venue for this summit had to be outside Delhi and Mamallapuram was selected.
            • Saudi Arabia has allowed women to join armed forces, calling it another "milestone in women empowerment". 
              • Women would be able to serve as private first class, corporal or sergeant in the Air Force, Navy and other armed forces. 
            • Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu today embarked on a 5-day visit to Comoros and Sierra Leone
              • It is the 1st high-level visit from India to the two African countries.
              • In Comoros he will hold a detailed bilateral meeting with country's President Azali Assoumani tomorrow.
              • A number of MoUs and agreements are expected to be signed during the visit.
              • The 3-day visit will witness the Vice President interacting with the Indian community and calling on Abdou Ousseni the President of the Assembly of Comoros.
              • On the second leg of his visit, Mr. Naidu will arrive in Sierra Leone on Saturday. 
              • The following day, he will have a detailed bilateral meeting with country's President Julius Maada Wonie Bio and will meet Speaker of Sierra Leone Parliament Chernor Bundu as well as country's Foreign Minister Nabeela Farida Tunia. 
              • The visit of Vice President is part of India's Africa outreach policy.

            • Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare Dr Harsh Vardhan along with several State Health Ministers today launched Surakshit Matritva Aashwasan (SUMAN) in New Delhi.
              • The initiative aims at assuring dignified, respectful and quality health care at no cost and zero tolerance for denial of services for every woman and newborn visiting the public health facility in order to end all preventable maternal and newborn deaths. 
              • It also provides a positive birth experience to both mother and infant.
            • Union Minister for Human Resources Development Ramesh Pokhariyal Nishank launched ambitious DHRUV programme in the headquarter of Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) in Bengaluru today. 
              • DHRUV is a unique programme to identify talented students and mentor them in the centre of excellence for 14 days so that they can reach their full potential and work for the society.
            • The 1st-of-its-kind 'Garbage Cafe' commenced in Ambikapur city of Chhattisgarh
              • The café is being run by the Ambikapur municipal corporation. 
              • In this unique Cafe', poor people and rag pickers will get free food in exchange for one kilogram of plastic, while breakfast will be provided if half a kilogram of plastic is brought to the cafe.  
            • In Madhya Pradesh, Governor Lalji Tandon cleared the Municipality amendment bill 2019
              • The approval clears the way for indirect polls of mayors and municipality chairpersons in Madhya Pradesh. 
              • The civic polls are due in Madhya Pradesh ahead on December this year.

            • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has given its final nod to the Kerala Government for the formation of the Kerala Bank
              • With its formation, the proposed Kerala Bank will be the largest banking network in the state.
              • Objective of the formation of the Kerala Bank : To strengthen the cooperative sector.
            • Lakshmi Vilas Bank has announced that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) did not approve its merger with Indiabulls Housing Finance
              • The lender was recently placed under RBI's "prompt corrective action" due to high level of bad loans, lack of sufficient capital and a negative return on assets for two consecutive years. 
            • India's largest lender State Bank of India (SBI) has cut the interest rate on savings accounts with balances up to ₹1 lakh to 3.25% from 3.5%. 
              • It also reduced its Marginal Cost of Funds based Lending Rate (MCLR) by 10 basis points across all tenors after the RBI slashed repo rate. 
              • The one-year MCLR will now come down to 8.05% per annum from 8.15%.
            • The Union Cabinet has approved to hike the Dearness Allowance (DA) for central government employees by 5% to 17%
              • This move, termed as a 'Diwali Gift', will benefit around 50 lakh employees and 62 lakh pensioners.
              • The move will cost the government around ₹16,000 crore.
            • Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal will attend the 9th Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership, RCEP Intersessional Ministerial meeting beginning tomorrow at Bangkok in Thailand.

                • The line of credit was announced during PM Narendra Modi's visit to Mongolia in 2015.

              • The 2019 Nobel Prize in Physics has been awarded with one half to James Peebles for theoretical discoveries in physical cosmology and the other half jointly to Michel Mayor and Didier Queloz
                • Mayor and Queloz received the prize for discovery of an exoplanet orbiting a solar-type star. 
                • The 2018 Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded for inventions in laser physics.
              New Appointments
              • Titan Company today announced the retirement of its MD Bhaskar Bhat after about 33 years of service in the company. 
                • The position has been taken over by CK Venkataraman, who was the CEO of Titan's jewellery division since 2005.

                International Current Affairs
                • Today (7th October) is World Day for Decent Work .
                  • During this day trade unions, union federations and other workers associations develop their actions to promote the idea of Decent Work.  
                  • This year marks the 12th World Day for Decent Work (WDDW)
                  • Theme of World Day for Decent Work 2019  :  “Investing in care for gender equality
                • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh left New Delhi this afternoon on a 2-day visit to France
                  • He will meet French President Emmanuel Macron tomorrow. 
                  • Later, he will participate in the handing over ceremony of Rafale fighter aircraft.
                • Minister of Petroleum & Natural Gas Dharmendra Pradhan will pay a 3-day visit to Mongolia beginning today. 
                  • During this visit, he will  participate in the opening ceremony of  infrastructure that Mongolia has already constructed for the Indian funded, Mongol Refinery  project.
                  • Note : The Mongol Refinery project is being  developed under a line of credit of 1.236 billion US dollars extended by India during the Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Mongolia in 2015 and subsequently enhanced during the State visit of the President of Mongolia to India last month.
                • The World Trade Organisation (WTO) will host the 1st World Cotton Day (WCD) celebrations in Geneva today. 
                  • This event stems from the application by the Cotton-4 countries (Benin, Burkina Faso, Chad and Mali) to the United Nations General Assembly for its official recognition of a World Cotton Day, reflecting the importance of cotton as a global commodity.
                  • Union Textiles Minister Smriti Irani is representing India in the 5-day event.
                  • Important Note : World Cotton Day (7th October) celebrates the many advantages of cotton, from its qualities as a natural fibre, to the benefits people obtain from its production, transformation, trade and consumption.
                • Mauritius Prime Minister Pravind Kumar Jugnauth has dissolved parliament and called for general elections next month. 
                  • Jugnauth, who is also finance minister will seek another term as leader of the Mouvement Socialiste Militant (MSM)
                National Current Affairs
                • In Jammu and Kashmir, Crossed Swords Division organized a “VEER KUTUMB RALLY” at Tanda, Akhnoor with an aim to reach out to veterans, veer naris, widows and their families. 
                  • The Rally was organised by the Indian Army as part of its activities to observe 2019 as the 'Year of the Next of Kin'.  
                Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
                • India has received the 1st tranche of details about financial accounts of its residents in Swiss banks under a new automatic exchange of information framework between the two countries.
                  • It marks a significant milestone in the fight against black money suspected to be stashed abroad.
                  • Note : This is the first time that India has received details from Switzerland under the AEOI (Automatic Exchange of Information) framework, which provides for exchange of information on financial accounts that currently active as well as those accounts that were closed during 2018.
                  • The next exchange would take place in September 2020.
                • To celebrate the 55th Anniversary of India's flagship capacity building programme - Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation, the Development Partnership Administration Division of the External Affairs Ministry is organizing a conference in New Delhi today. 
                  • External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar will preside over the event and Minister of State for Defence and Minister of State for External Affairs will be Guests of Honour.
                Deaths
                • Actor-comedian Rip Taylor (84) passed away.
                  • He is known for making appearances on shows like, 'The Gong Show' and 'Password', among others. 
                  • He also made an appearance in the series 'The Monkees'.
                • Ginger Baker (80), the drummer and co-founder of rock band Cream, passed away.
                  • Baker was ranked number 3 in Rolling Stone magazine's 100 Greatest Drummers of All Time list.
                Awards & Honors
                • William G. Kaelin Jr, Sir Peter J. Ratcliffe and Gregg L. Semenza have been jointly awarded the 2019 Nobel Prize for Physiology.
                  • They were honored with this prestegious award  for discovery of how cells sense and adapt to oxygen.
                  • Medicine is the first of the Nobel Prizes awarded each year. 
                  • It will be followed by physics prize on Tuesday, and chemistry on Wednesday.
                • The 50th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) will honour and showcase Dadasaheb Phalke Award winner Amitabh Bachchan's selected films at the festival.
                  • The festival will be held from 20th-28th November in Goa and will screen over 200 films from 76 countries. 'Gully Boy' will also be screened at the festival.
                • Bollywood Actress Bhumi Pednekar bagged her 1st International award when she won the Face of Asia award at the Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) in South Korea.
                • The name of Squadron Leader Ravi Khanna, who was killed by JKLF terrorists in 1990, has been added to the National War Memorial after it was approved by the Indian Air Force (IAF). 
                  • Squadron Leader Khanna and three other IAF personnel were killed in January 1990 in Kashmir allegedly by JKLF founder Yasin Malik
                  • Twenty-seven bullets were pumped into Khanna's body. The trial against Malik had resumed last month in Jammu.
                  • About National War Memorial
                    • The National War Memorial at the India Gate is dedicated to the defence personnel who laid down their lives for the country. 
                    • The three armed services approve the names of the soldiers after which they are included in the National War Memorial.
                New Appointments
                • In Assam, Justice Ajai Lamba has taken oath today as the Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court.  
                  • State Governor Professor Jagdish Mukhi has administered the oath taking ceremony at the Raj Bhawan in Guwahati.
                Sports Current Affairs
                • Surender Singh of India created 3 world records at the ongoing World Powerlifting Championships in Berlin, Germany.
                  • Surender bagged Gold medal in 110 kg category, Classic Raw and the Best Lifter Award in Classic Raw and Single Ply.
