International Current Affairs
  • World Book Day or World Book and Copyright Day is being observed today.
    • This day is organized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), to promote reading, publishing and copyright.
    • The first World Book Day was celebrated on 23 April 1995.
    • Important Points to Note :
      • Sharjah named World Book Capital for the year 2019.
      • Kuala Lumpur chosen as the World Book Capital for the year 2020.
  • Today (23rd April) is UN English Language Day.
    • The event was established by the UNESCO in 2010.
    • April 23 was chosen as the date for the English language because it is the birth  anniversary of greatest writer in the English language and the world's pre-eminent dramatist William Shakespeare.
  • North Korean leader Kim Jong-un will visit Russia in April, for a summit with President Vladimir Putin
    • Note : Kim is seen working to build up foreign support since his February summit with US President Donald Trump ended abruptly.
  • The Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the Sri Lanka serial bomb blasts that killed 321 people and injured over 500 others. 
    • The country had held local jihadist group National Thowheeth Jama'ath responsible for the blasts. 
  • The 29th edition of the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair (ADIBF) is all set to receive more than 1000 exhibitors from 50 countries on Wednesday.
    • Important Note : India has been nominated as the “Guest of Honour” country at the Book Fair. 
    • The Fair will be held in the UAE capital from 24th  to 30th April 2019.
National Current Affairs
  • Voting for the 3rd phase of the 17th Lok Sabha elections has begun today. 
    • It's the biggest phase out of the 7 phases, covering 117 Lok Sabha constituencies across 13 states and 2 Union Territories
    • Over 2.10 lakh polling booths are in place for smooth conduct of polls, while 18.85 crore registered voters will decide the fate of 1,640 candidates.
  • The Madras High Court in a ruling stated the term 'Bride' as per the Hindu Marriage Act also refers to transwomen and not just someone born as a woman.
  • Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman today met Indian Navy officers at the Naval Commanders' Conference in New Delhi to discuss security challenges faced by the country. 
    • Lauding the Navy for taking swift action and switching from exercise mode to battle mode following the Pulwama terror attack, she said, "A strong Navy remains a necessary guarantor of India's security and prosperity."
Science & Technology
  • France has launched 'Tchap', its government-only chat app for officials, after fixing a bug that exposed chats and could let people chat with government workers.
MOUs & Agreements
  • A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed between the Ministry of AYUSH and Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) for cooperation in research and education in areas of traditional systems of medicine and its integration with modern science.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • The Bimal Jalan committee formed to study the RBI's capital structure is likely to identify excess reserves of up to ₹3 lakh crore, Bank of America Merrill Lynch (BofAML) said. 
    • Capping overall reserves at 20% from 25.5% will release ₹1.96 lakh crore, it added. 
    • There's no restriction which prevents the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) from transferring the money to government, BofAML further noted.
  • The United States has announced it won't grant any more sanctions exemptions to India and 7 other nations importing oil from Iran. 
Sports Current Affairs
  • Shiva Thapa became the 1st Indian boxer to be assured of a 4th successive medal at the Asian Championships by advancing to the semifinals in Bangkok today.
  • Chennai Super Kings captain M S Dhoni became the 1st Indian to hit 200 sixes in the Indian Premier League (IPL) after reaching the landmark figure in the match against Royal Challengers Bangalore on Sunday. 
  • The Badminton Asia Championships began at Wuhan in China today.
    • The Indian contingent comprises PV Sindhu and Saina Nehwal in Women's Singles, and Kidambi Srikanth and Sameer Verma in Men's Singles.
